Luca Essay Progress - Movie Watch-through Notes

I've been busy with so many thing, but I'm finally back to working on video essays, and I'm revisiting Luca as an easier project that I can hopefully complete this month, start to finish. The linked document is about 3k words of notes I've taken during my fairly thorough viewing of the film over the last three days. Doing another queer reading, obviously. I swear I'm also going to make videos about other things, but I'm doing this one out of spite a bit because people were REALLY WEIRD about the Luca segment of my Beastars video and I'm kinda sick of it.

There's an interesting contrast there because both characters live in small coastal villages and have wanderlust and are in conflict with their families. But for Moana it's just... less? Her craving for adventure being at odds with her expected role as a future leader of her tribe. There isn't really anything *wrong* with her. But Luca has to hide because he's in danger for who he is, and there are stakes for if he's discovered by either his family (the deep) or society (probably murder). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cPAbx5kgCJo

Highly interesting analysis, and did not expect the comparo with Moana. The "betrayal" scene at the water's edge has parallels in terms of race: people of mixed background able to "pass" and dicey code switching. Thanks a lot for sharing this process, now I have to re-watch Luca AND Moana.
