I knoooow... religious institutions in stories are almost always shady, if not outright evil. That's why I'm hoping for a red herring for once.

That's a flag I've seen pretty much from the start. Maybe not all of them, but at least one person in a higher position. For good measure I would put Beatrice's brother on that list as well.
