I believe this was primarily just a bad matchup when it comes to combat. We have Yusuke who is headstrong and quick to rush in, Kurama who is overly cautious, and Kuwabara who although is probably the second most durable of the group, is also the slowest in terms of actual speed/reflexes. I think if Hiei was there the whole fight would’ve gone more like you were expecting since our short stack is just as headstrong as Yusuke at times

The second episode "Divide and Conquer" is supposed to show Sensui's squad creating chaos to split them up. I do think they prefer showing 1v1s but it's probably also awkward to fight with Kurama's whips. Plus a lot happens really fast I guess.
