That's Canute's voice. Thorfinn was remembering his words. Which is essentially him remembering Canute's initial intentions of creating paradise on earth. "If God won't, I will." It's never mentioned but, basically, Thorfinn is thinking that if Canute is still that person then they should be able to resolve this through words. Also, there's another reactor I watched react to Vinland Saga. A Goodwin TV. Really good reactions if you wanna check him out. Anyways, he would constantly bring up the question.. "How do we get to where Thorfinn is without having to endure all the things Thorfinn had to?" And if there's even a way to do it. Can it be taught or does it have to be lived? It's a very difficult and powerful question.

Since you mention that you like callback, I wanna mention that the vinland speech to Arnheid is a callback to episode 1 season 1. Back then, Thors save a dying slave. And to keep the slave alive, Thors mention about vinland the same way Thorfin did this episode. Thorfin was there when Thors did that.
