Technically yeah. Even though it's Ash's overall story, they can be watched on their own, some better than others. XY stands on its own the best out of the bunch, DP and BW also work well on their own, the former being regarded as the second best after XY

And what i mean that XY and SM are completely different tones XY is more Shonen anime ( with more focus of crisp lines and camera movements and a bit more mature tone and the group is traveling so no staying in one place too long like the series before) SM is more like a slice of life comedy that focuses on wacky faces and jokes and a central location for most plots of the series Also a bit of a school life anime But honestly has plenty of dark and mature moments to compensate

Kinda Pokémon is technically a show where the series are in order for a story But u can watch some separate XY which is right before SM Both series have completely different tones ( u can hop into these two as they are primarily their own stories ) But some context of past series are needed to completely understand some moments The order of series Original ( Kanto, Orange Islands, Johto) Advanced ( Hoenn and Kanto Battle Frontier) DP ( All of Sinnoh) BW ( Unova and Decalor Islands ) XY ( Kalos ) SM ( Alola ) Journeys is the finale of Ash’s story and it includes Sword and Shields plot with extra stories from the last few regions) Horizons is a Brand New story the u can do along with XY but its only a year in with only 60 episodes

Pokemon XY? Hell yeah. Best suggestion is to do Pokemon kinda like Power Rangers, where to do a few different series' at once, like XY and DP. Oh, and for the record, you've 15 episodes of the first season left
