Although I’ll never know what it’s like to be pregnant from a first-person perspective, I very much related from a general medical perspective to the story Dusty told about the ADHDer patient wanting to be fully informed about what to expect. If I’m in a medical situation with either no or limited control, it’s reassuring to have my hand held and have every step in the process explained to me. I am not someone who likes surprises in that kind of situation or can just sit back and trust everything will work out. When I underwent surgery, for example, it went just about as well as I could expect physically, but being kept largely in the dark by my medical team was extremely traumatic, as I had no idea what was normal and what I should be worried about (thus, I worried and even panicked over everything).
