Well its not really "greek magic" but the basis of this magic system harkens back to the concepts of Eidos and Idea that are originally from Greek philosophy. The barebones explanation for at least the Modern Magic used in the series revolves around these two concepts and and the variantions that leads to the different classifications. The theoretical basis for the Modern Magic in the series is eidos. Eidos (個別情報体, literally "individual information body") is the individual collections of metaphysical information that defines an individual object's or phenomena's current state of being/existence in the universe. Magic in its modern definition is the act of altering an event, object or phenomena by altering their infromation body, eidos, By altering the information in the eidos, it causes a change to whatever that eidos is defining in the universe. An important concept is the Idea, the information body dimension. This refers to the metaphysical dimension where individual eidos are recorded. When performing magic, magicians access this dimension to rewrite the eidos there by outputting magic formulae (sequences/magical programs) into the dimension. Two types of massless particles belong to the demension of spirit phenomena, psions (thought particles) and pushions (spirit particles). Psions are information particles that record awareness and thought results. The information in eidos are made up of psions. Altering the psions making up the eidos is the basis of modern magic. A magician (in this series, a shortening of "magic technician") is the term for a person with the ability and skill to use magic at a practical level. A magician can output psions of their own into the Idea. These outputted psions can be used to interfere with the psions that make up eidos in order to alter the eidos, but simply outputting psions will not perform magic. If just outputted as-is, the outputted psions will dissipate without having an effect. To make the outputted psions have an effect, they need to be further refined into a magic sequence (basically a magical version of program or spell formula). There is a bit more that requires one to be able to use magic in this series this way but that is the bare basic concepts involved at least with the Modern Magic of this series. There are different styles to achieve things which the series divides into three broad catergories with sub categories within those main three. Modern Magic (which is basically a more scientific version of magic broken down), Ancient Magic (which is a lot of traditional methods of using magic), and finally Superpower/Supernatural Powers (magics that directly cause phenomenon without sequences/formula or any other ritual, unlike Modern Magic or Ancient Magic. However, Superpower users can only use one type of magic, any differences will just be variations of the original)

I will have to look at that. Been a while since I saw anything about Greek magic.

Well I guess but from the looks of things thats not going to be very helpful for getting things done without using the falna unless something drastic changes or she comes up with an entirely new way to use magic that makes it viable to use without falna. Athough one magic system I was recently looked into was the Magic System of Irregular at Magic High School that has an interesting approach to the way magic works on a technical level so to speak. And actually harkens back to Ancient Greek philosophy or at least the "Modern Magic" does. There are actually several classifications of magic in that series. https://mahouka-koukou-no-rettousei.fandom.com/wiki/Magic https://mahouka-koukou-no-rettousei.fandom.com/wiki/Classification_of_Magic https://magicsystems.fandom.com/wiki/Magic_(The_Irregular_at_Magic_High_School) This might be helpful I think if your looking to expand the magic system and how Taylor could possibly approach it if its broken down and reclassified.

Well, magic circles are just the human method. Elves do their own thing, same as dwarves and the rest. It's just the way it evolved through thousands of years. As for being overcomplicated and generally weak and less effective for combat? True. But magic circles were never meant for combat. They were made for enchantments, lab work, or sieges. However, Taylor is going to experiment. She'll find what works for her, create Spells that don't rely on one or more components in order to function, and develop her own form of magic.

I'm not speaking of it being weaker than falna-based magic, that was a given. I'm specifically taking about it being a way too overcomplicated to even use these one-off effects that its a wonder it was developed further at all. It would've honestly been better to make it rather simple to learn but hard to master for an ordinary person. In this case, memorizing and/or creating spell circles alone (no need for reagents unless your just wanting to buff it past its normal limits) and then learning to control the energy flow and visualization over time to get the desired effect would be the method I would've gone with (like Fullmetal Alchemist style) OR Alternatively, drop the circles entirely while focusing on incantations and regulation of magical energy to achieve the desired effect (and with more control your need for longer enchantations gets reduced and thus increasing the amount of times you can cast in addition to being able to get more for less) Making it an absolute requirement for combining all three componets I think has made this almost completely non-viable in combat outside of traps and even then its even weaker using her cheats that it normally would be making the weak spell even weaker. Its a nerf ontop of a nerf where there was no need. If you hadn't made the distinction of how her work arounds make the weak spells even more anemic to the point of it barely having any effect makes this even more apparent.

Ian Rodgers

The magic isn't meant to be overwhelming. It is a weak yet sophisticated form of magic that has two main values to Taylor: how easily it can be used by her in conjunction with her swarm, and how it can be modified on the fly to produce as many different forms and functions as she desires. It has drawbacks, but she is nothing if not stubborn and will find ways to make use of it. Like always when it comes to Taylor, it is not about one big attack, it is many smaller ones working in concert.

MN01

I got to say it. This falna-less magic system your trying to introduce is honestly completely underwhelming to use outside of maybe some non-combat utility purposes and a bit more versatility in how it can be used. Kind of wish you didn't nerf normal magic so much by placing so many restrictions on it outside of it being less potent by not being backed up by the divine power of the falna. Making it viable for combat is going take her getting a new ability from her falna to accelerate her magical education OR have QA be the one to provide the energy and engrave the magic circles into her soul and shortening her incantations to one word to accomplish this. Maybe it provides a bit more flexiblity but you could probably get a skill that would allow you to weave new spells like "Spellsmith" or something Otherwise, its too much for little to no reward and frankly the only way I see it being worth it is if QA is able to give Taylor a way to accelerate and refine the process to the point it allows her to cast magic with results comparable to a falna cast magic spell. The only way you could probably use it in any sort of combat is through traps but even that appears to not be very viable considering outside a few niche ways and the cost and prep are kind of cost prohibitive and frankly anemic even with this use of bufs to make circles and speak incantations remotely, once, based on what this chapter tells us.
