Great points, and thanks for reading! Scouting the enemy is definitely the smarter play here—Constantine knows better than to rush into another fight without intel. You’re absolutely right about casualties too; logistics and disease were often deadlier than the battlefield itself in this era. As for cavalry, yeah, that’s a glaring gap in his forces. Building up a strong, versatile cavalry arm is definitely on his to-do list, but it’s going to take time, resources, and a bit of creative thinking to counter the Turkish advantage there.

Absolutely, you nailed it—this is just the opening round. Constantine and Murad are both too experienced to overreach when the stakes are this high. Trust me, this is far from over; things are just heating up!

Terrific chapter, really shows how similar Constantine and Murad are. They know that this is a glancing blow, going for a knockout could work, but it would leave you exposed (taking the wall or taking Athens). So they do what professionals do when they meet, square up and size the other fighter up. This isn't over not by a longshot. Also the rearguard seems like more than fear of Constantine. Murad has to know he doesn't have a ton of calvary available. Seems more along the lines of fearing encirclement, keep the fast guys available to make sure it doesn't happen.

The horsebreeding are in the Theban Plains which in the year of the story is part of the Ottoman vassal Duchy of Athens and the Hungarian plains

TFTC. A wise decision by Constantine to scout the enemy. That battle wasn't long or apocalyptic enough to cause the Ottoman force to shatter. Remember, the vast majority of pre-industrial war casualties were from disease and lack of provisions, not war wounds. He really needs to develop a large cavalry force of his own for raiding, recon, and countering the Turkish cavalry.
