Constantine turned slowly, his dark eyes fixing on Dragas. “What do you mean?” he asked, his voice calm but growing colder. “Where is she?”
Dragas hesitated, lowering his gaze. “I thought it best to inform you… there were signs. Whispers about Petros and Maria these past weeks. I had men investigate, but they uncovered nothing substantial until recently. By then, it was too late.”
The words hung in the air like a blade poised to fall. Constantine’s expression didn’t change, but his hand tightened against the windowsill. “What do you mean, ‘too late’?” he asked, his tone cutting through the room like steel. “Speak plainly, Dragas.”
Dragas exhaled, as if bracing himself for the blow his words would deliver. “Petros… and Maria. They’ve fled, Despot. Two days ago. They took a thousand ducats from the treasury and boarded a Genoese ship. Likely bound for Italy.”
For a moment, there was only silence. The faint cheers from outside felt distant, almost unreal, as if they belonged to another world. Constantine turned back to the window, his jaw tightening, his eyes scanning the torchlit streets below as though searching for something—or someone—that was no longer there.
“And you knew about this?” he said finally, his voice low, dangerous.
“I suspected,” Dragas admitted, his tone heavy with guilt. “There were rumors, signs of an affair. I had men investigate, but… I underestimated them. I didn’t think they would act so boldly, and by the time we had confirmation, they were already gone.”
Constantine’s hands curled into fists at his sides. “You underestimated them,” he repeated, his voice barely above a whisper. Then, with more force: “You waited until it was too late to act. You failed me, Dragas.”
Theophilus flinched, lowering his head. “I take full responsibility, Despot. I failed to act swiftly, and for that, I am deeply sorry.”
Constantine closed his eyes for a moment, drawing in a slow, deliberate breath. When he opened them, his gaze was cold and unyielding. “Leave me,” he said, his tone sharp and final. “We’ll discuss this further tomorrow.”
Dragas bowed and retreated, the sound of the door closing behind him echoing in the now-empty chamber.
The betrayal cut deeper than he had expected—not just because of Petros’s theft, but because of Maria. Her face lingered in his mind, a cruel reminder of the warmth he had let himself believe was genuine. But then, what had she expected? That he would set aside the empire’s survival for her sake? That Murad would wait while Constantine stayed in Glarentza, playing the attentive lover? No. The reality was brutal, but it was clear. He had to protect what he had built, and that meant sacrifice. The enemy would not pause for his personal happiness.
Yet the logic of it did little to dull the sting. He slammed a fist down on the table, the impact rattling the brass markers scattered across the map. His reflection in the darkened window caught his eye, and he saw not the Despot of Mystras, not the emperor-to-be, but a man standing alone at the edge of his own ruin. Had his ambition made him incapable of anything else?
The noise of the celebration outside swelled again, mocking in its jubilance. Constantine turned back to the window, his gaze hardening. Whatever guilt or regret he felt now, it could not paralyze him. Petros and Maria were gone, and the damage was done. Mourning their betrayal would accomplish nothing.
But there would be consequences.
He strode to the far corner of the chamber, where a small chest sat locked. Producing a key, he opened it and withdrew a thin bundle of parchment. He spread the papers on the table, scrawling a series of sharp, precise instructions.
Petros had stolen from him not just gold but something more fundamental—trust, authority, loyalty. No one could be allowed to believe they could do the same. Not nobles, not merchants, not lovers. He would send agents—his best men, those who knew how to track shadows and pry secrets from whispers. Petros and Maria could not run far enough. Wherever they went—Italy, Genoa, beyond—he would find them.
And when he did, Petros would face the punishment he deserved. No one stole from Constantine Palaiologos. He had to set an example, no matter how far he had to go. Mercy, in this case, was weakness, and weakness was a luxury Byzantium could not afford.
As he finished writing, Constantine pressed his seal into the wax with deliberate force. He straightened, his shoulders squaring as he refocused on the tasks ahead. The empire still needed him. The army had to be expanded. Athens had to be fortified. The Tachis Ippos had to be implemented. There was no room for hesitation, no time for self-pity. Murad wouldn’t wait, and neither would the ambitions of those who sought to undermine him.
Maria had taken his trust, but she hadn’t taken his resolve. If anything, her betrayal was a reminder of what was at stake—and why he could not afford to falter.
Beyond the walls of the chamber, the city pulsed with life, its people celebrating a victory they believed would lead to a brighter future. Constantine let their cheers wash over him, a faint but steady reassurance. Whatever his personal failures, the people still believed in him. And as long as they believed, he would press forward.
Because there was no other choice.

Yeah, Maria’s pretty young, and definitely caught in a tough spot, can’t really blame her for how things played out. As for Constantine’s Teodora… let’s just say the next chapters(BOOK II) might start planting seeds on that front.

Honestly, I can't blame Maria at all. We don’t learn her age, but she can’t be that old. Petros is the one who should get all the blame. My best guess is that Petros didn’t believe Constantine could hold the Turks back and fled before all of Morea would burn. A good outcome on the long road ahead, after all Constantine needs his own Teodora. Someone who can support him from behind when things get rough and keep him in check when his ambition might go too far.

I’ve definitely seen a lot of people arguing for the “mistress but noble wife” route, but honestly, this was less about dodging those comments and more about keeping Constantine’s personal life just as unlucky as it was in reality. Some things never change, no matter how much history gets rewritten! And hey, never underestimate what someone will do for love—rationality tends to take a backseat when emotions run high. 😆

yep make no sense story wise since he saved her, loved her and was killing people who killed her family. Author did this to removes a love interest or deal in story with fight in court to his love with her or any future wife fight.

i assume you got bored of all the people saying keep as mistress and let him have a noble wife. This seem out of left field, being a mistress is safer then fleeing with some random guy with some money when you know the penalty is death for stealing much less from a king.

Oh for sure it will be interesting to see. A person who legitimately owes their life to you, you plop them in luxury they couldn't dream of. Constantine shared some real deep thoughts and feelings with Maria, that betrayal has got to rattle him.

The funny thing is, this removes the two easiest access for potential betrayal and makes their positions watched in the future. The ambitious local who rode the coattails adding one more friend to the palace roster? The mistress of a powerful man who knows she could never be queen, well less said about potential betrayal there the better.

It feels more like she was under pressure from the court than anything else, and it doesn't make sense to me that she would ignore the merit of Constantine's campaign against the Ottomans. She lost family to them, I'd expect she wants vengeance, no this weird romantic mess.

Maria is just a young girl, and it was hinted in earlier chapters that she was upset and moaning about Constantine being away so often (like during his trip to Italy). So, the real scheming here leans much more toward Petros’ actions. He definitely had more of a hand in all this than Maria ever could.

Petros was Constantine’s steward and a member of his council. He comes from a noble family that settled in Glarentza, and he was introduced back in the early chapters.

I smell foul play here and Constantine is being played like a fiddle. Maria doesn't have the tools for doing half of what's been done without getting caught, so I'd wager that Petros has been selected as a sacrificial lamb in order to remove Maria from the despot's bed and replace her with a proper, alliance making noble.
