RENAISSANSE SI

I can’t say for sure if Constantine’s planning to make Thessaloniki his capital, but yeah, it’s definitely his new main military hub. As for the population, rough ballpark: Central Macedonia is sitting around 120k, Thessaly maybe 150k. Altogether he’s got a bit over half a million souls under his banner now, give or take.

RENAISSANSE SI

Originally, I did plan to show more of the crusader negotiations and farewells, but the arc dragged longer than expected and I didn’t want to jam in a filler chapter just to repeat the treaty beats. Tocco’s absolutely up next, he’s on borrowed time. As for Ioannina, with the Albanian revolt in full swing, that region is a real mess right now, and Constantine already overextended himself.

Max Müller

Regarding the peace treaty: was there a duration specified? Or just a general peace treaty with both sides thinking it wont last anyway? Also: i wounder if the court in Constantinople might be trying to coup Demetrios given the results of his choices. Everyone likes a winner after all For Ioninna, i suspect Constantine could use it to test the willingness of the Ottomans to go to war over the coming years, using covert means of incorperating it and see if the Ottomans flinch Who is scrwed though is the rebels. They did not achieve their goals yet and a re still in a state of conflict with the Ottomans, who will likely try to squash them asap. Of course historically that took several attempts and mountains of corpses so unsure if they have the manpower and will in this timeline. The good part for Constantine is: he has not taken Constantinople yet and thus wont have to talk about Union of the churches with the pope, because he can point back to said statement.

Davada

This is good am guessing Constantine wants to make theslonki the new capital right? Also roughly how depopulated have the retaken lands become due to ottoman razing?

visoled

Good Chapter, Wouldn't have minded seeing the negotiations or farewells of the crusader leaders. I'm thinking its time to take the tocco domains now as well, Wondering a bit why they didn't take ioannina as well?

RENAISSANSE SI

Thanks! Yeah, the mines was a hidden card on the table, and historically they ended up being a huge pillar of Ottoman wealth once fully developed. And with Athos, he’s learned that mixing steel with measured outreach gets more respect than pleading. An emperor can’t whisper to the mountain, he has to make it hear him!

RENAISSANSE SI

Glad you enjoyed it! Athos really was a heavyweight in Orthodox politics, not just monasteries but a whole network of land and influence, so they had to be reckoned with. You raise good points about the treaty too: Constantine definitely could’ve pressed harder with the vizier given how shattered the Ottomans were. And yeah, the mines are going to matter a lot, coinage, weights, and a stronger fiscal spine are exactly where things are headed. I really like your note on taxing monasteries by estate output rather than blanket exemption, very "Byzantine" solution!

RENAISSANSE SI

Thank you!

RENAISSANSE SI

Good catch! Serbia definitely isn’t an Ottoman vassal anymore after the treaty, I went back and fixed the map colors to reflect that. Thanks for pointing it out!

RENAISSANSE SI

Haha, right! Thomas has good intentions, but he keeps behaving like he’s on the same level as Constantine, and that’s bound to cause friction. At some point, his brother is going to have to sit him down for a hard talk.

RENAISSANSE SI

Demetrios is definitely in a desperate spot right now, and he knows it. How he lashes out, and whether Constantine can turn that against him, is something I’ve been turning over too.

RENAISSANSE SI

Yeah, Thomas has plenty of heart but not enough discipline, he admires his brother yet still acts like he’s on equal footing. It’s useful loyalty, but also a risk if he keeps straying outside the lines Constantine is trying to draw.

RENAISSANSE SI

Exactly, he’s climbing fast on multiple fronts. In the West he’s no longer just “the Greek who prints Bibles,” though that reputation alone already made waves. Now he’s also the Christian champion who broke the Sultan, fielded innovative tactics with guns and pikes, and restored a major lost city. Book trade, battlefield, and throne, all of it together means his name’s rising a lot faster than anyone expected.

ioshf fikry

I wonder how will Constantine be viewed in the west..after all it was him and now the holy roman emperor that broke the ottomans back again and again

RENAISSANSE SI

Haha I like the ambition! For now Constantine’s just trying to keep Thessaloniki from collapsing under its own dust, but you’re right, this is the breathing space to consolidate and think bigger. Whether the eagle really soars that far will depend on coin, mines, and keeping allies in line…

RENAISSANSE SI

Appreciate the thoughts! Yeah, Thomas is shaping up as both help and headache, loyal but reckless, and far too swayed by his in-laws? Sooner or later Constantine’s going to have to tighten the leash. The mines, are a total game-changer, proper coin flow means he can finally think like a state, not just a warlord scrambling for funds. Athos… yeah, stubborn as stone. But you nailed it: after Serres, Constantine doesn’t need to beg anymore, he’s the one with leverage. And on the marriage? We will found out in the next chapters!

RENAISSANSE SI

Glad you liked it! And you’re absolutely right, peace alone won’t lure people into a shattered Thessaloniki. Historically you’d need tax breaks, land grants, even moving whole communities to get a city breathing again. Constantine’s opening pitch is just “law and safety,” because that’s the one thing they’ve lacked, but he’ll have to sweeten it with grain and plots if he wants results. And with his realm basically doubled overnight, there’s a mountain of work ahead just to stitch these new lands into something coherent.

Sir Baka

Niceeee, the purple blobbing grows! I see the church unification plot is steadily making its return. It’s only going to get more divisive from here, I bet, as they have to grapple with more and more hardliners that oppose the unification of the churches. Resettlement efforts! Though, actually, would the promises of just peace and protection of the army be enough to encourage people to move to the city? I’m not particularly knowledgeable about how historically, one would repopulate cities (outside of the natural method of course), but I feel like you’d need to make more enticing offers. I don’t believe over crowding is an issue in Morea, with the return of the Roman Empire only rising so recently.

Max Müller

i think Constantine has a handful of dedicated warships. You need to remember, warships are very expensive.

Max Müller

Very surprised that Constantine did not push for it.

Max Müller

I think bigger army legitimacy wins

pls don't ban me

nice chapter. Thomas is surely being influenced too much by his wife's family. that has to end. the man clearly admires his older brother but needs a pep talk or someone like george to be with him all the time. the mines will be very useful if they have a decent output. mount athos is important and all but damn if those monks are stubborn. sure, orthodox religion is cool and all but with his recent victory Costantine is gaining more and more standing for the union and more leverage. he is no longer int he position of accepting all the demands. he won the crusade were the HR emperor failed and killed the ottoman sultan. when he will set up foot in Constaninople, he'll be the one dictating terms of an eventual union of churches. regarding marriage. i understand the conflict of the man to marry a child, but technically it's just a preparation, he will actually marry her when she will be what, 14? 16? i know the age gap and all but: 1- 14 is basically being considered adult at the time. 2- even today the age of consent is usually between 13 and 16.

Pearl of the Orient

Good. Time to consolidate and build for the coming war in five to ten years. The Roman Eagle flying again as far south as the Horn of Africa and as far east as Azerbaijan and the Euphrates. Taking Suzerainty over all Ottoman vassals from Egypt to the Moroccan tribes

de la Fouchardiere

I was wonderinf, is there a fleet ? I thought it was mentionned that an venician arsenal type building was constructed at Glarentza

Velyndin1989

Thomas’ in laws have their hooks in him and it’s definitely not helping things.

Kirra

It will be interesting to see what will happen to Ioannisa. It is completely surrounded by land, so the only option for supplies is by sea. So either the people revolt or Thomas might do something stupid again. Lastly, now that peace has come, Constantine has to step up and get married or engaged. He really cannot wait much longer. People might have accepted it in a full-blown war with the Ottoman Empire, but now, when a truce had been settled. He will also have to deal with Thomas. Constantine is the emperor, not Thomas, and Constantine has to make Thomas understand that.

Wen L.

He's headstrong and emotional warrior, he's going to get himself betrayed and killed at some point. However, it could be a good linchpin for Constantine to launch a new campaign later

Wen L.

I feel like Demetrius is going to be desperate after Constantine's victory and he may push some of the Orthodox followers to perform another assassination attempt. The gold/silver mine review sounds like a perfect opportunity for this kind of action. However, as a modern person, we know it's an obvious target and Constantine should know as well. It could be a good idea to lure Demetrius' "Orthodox" follower into an ambush, purging dissident with a proper pretense and not have to resort to heavy handed tactics.

russell marsh

Thomas what are you doing? Ugh as an older sibling I just want to strangle him. Or as we say in the south "a come to Jesus meeting" If he keeps making decisions without discussing it with his brother and his Emperor this will cause problems.

Velyndin1989

I feel that Thomas is more of a liability as opposed to an asset. The man needs to know his place.

Empty Crate

Hurrah the map update. The Empire grows once more yet it basically doubled in size were gonna be in for some growing pains arent we. Nice to see the Albanian revolts hopefully with the war over constantine will be able to send some more aid atleast. Surprised Serbia is still marked as a Ottoman vassal cant imagine that staying for long.

Alexander the Smoker

Something I’ve wondered about, is Constantine the actual legitimate Emperor? Both he and Demetrios were crowned Emperor, but was John planning on actually crowning Constantine his successor before being killed? Given the protests of the monks and likely others of the faith, is Constantine considered in rebellion as described in Romans 13 and by that, going against God? Because although that doesn’t stop him from deposing Demetrios, it could be seen as wrong in the eyes of many subjects, although that may be just because Demetrios is for the anti unionists.

TFTC. I admit to knowing very little about the holy places of Orthodox Christianity (except the obvious such as Hagia Sophia), so it is interesting to read of the influence of Athos. Is it coincidence that one of the Three Musketeers shares that name? I would also suggest that Constantine would have been more hard-nosed in negotiations with the Grand Vizier. They have a child as Sultan, a scattered army whose morale has been shattered, "trouble" on other borders that is certain to arise given their weakness, and a significant annual income far in excess of the amount demanded. Moreover, this is the bare minimum the Crusade agreed to. Normally in negotiations, you arrive at a middle number, unless you have a very weak position and the enemy knows it. The thing is, do the Ottomans know some of the weakness of the Crusade? Do they know their supply and casualty situation, or are they reeling from being crushed in two battles in as many years, and absolutely terrified of the Imperial army? Also, what happened to the Ottoman baggage train? There would have been a large Treasury there to pay the army, not to mention significant wealth of both the Sultan and the Ottoman nobility. If this was split out to the allies, then why give so much of the indemnity to them as well? I'd add that there should be a smaller, annual "peace" tax from the Ottomans for as long as the treaty lasts. They may not pay it for more than a couple of years, but every bit counts. You want to sap their ability to rebuild their central power, which is built on wealth. The potential silver mine is huge, because smaller currency amounts are the lifeblood of a strong economy, and for that you need silver and copper. He will want to introduce some basic coining/economic improvements, namely standardized weights and measures and standardized coinage using harder alloys with ridges on the edge to prevent people taking chips off of it. I know this is getting long-winded, but I have one more suggestion. Modern churches do not have to pay taxes on donations they receive, but they do pay income tax on any income from businesses they run. I would suggest something similar here for the estates and vineyards returned to the monasteries. Perhaps a per acre amount for vineyards, pasture, farmland, etc, with reductions for years of drought or other crop failure. A similar set fee for cheese-making or whatever else they get up to. Anyway, great chapter, and I'm looking forward to the next one.

Oh excellent chapter! I didn't even consider the mines what a resource one that neatly undercuts any Venetian scheming. The hardline to the Monks was perfect. Brutal honesty mixed with earnest outreach and a clear line that you don't cross. An Emperor's voice calling to the mountain.
