"I wanted to hit him, I could of beaten him but I had nothing to gain from that" is probably the strongest thing a man can say, he wouldn't of won any personal self respect from beating up some drunk douche bag, he's confident in his ability to fight but not from an inflated ego but from experience and knowing in this situation he had better odds at winning. I'm in awe of this character, you suit him so well, this is exactly the kind of man I think you are.
