What A Cartoon! - A Beavis and Butt-Head Christmas

This year, we're looking at the second Beavis and Butt-Head yuletide episode—the first with actual animation—where the two troubled teens find themselves in delightful and at times disgusting parodies of A Christmas Carol and It's a Wonderful Life. So pause your favorite holiday porno, because it's time to hear about our two favorite eternal adolescents trying their hardest to figure out the true meaning of Christmas.

This is a favorite annual Christmas special for me. The older I get, the more I like the offbeat Christmas specials (even though I still get teary eyed over the dumbest of sentimental Christmas toons - I'm not a monster) so I'll watch it probably more than once before Christmas comes and goes. I'm almost jealous of the simple mind of Beavis in that he only aspires to have a crappy job, a VCR, and some porn. That's all he needs to be happy, and it ain't much. Maybe this holiday season we should all strive to be a little bit more like Beavis? In a rare example of "Beavis and Butt-Head predicted it," in 1998 RoboCop received his own Christmas episode via the cartoon series RoboCop: Alpha Commando. The episode is titled "Oh Tannenbaum Whoa Tannenbaum" and it does not contain any references to Joey Lawrence that I picked up on. It's instead about a villainous woman named Tannenbaum who is shockingly horny for a kid's cartoon series. It is neither good nor bad, just one of many cartoons that showed up for a time and then was mostly forgotten. It received an unusual episode order of 40, but if we consider that the late 80's RoboCop had 12 episodes (it famously losing one episode so Marvel could make an X-Men pilot) then that brings the total to a syndication friendly 52 which may or may not have helped get it to air.

I was made aware of this when Rifftrax released an It’s a Wonderful Life riff and had to explain how the content based on the short story couldn’t be included

Weirdly my ears were burning as I just finished Eiyuden Chronicle, that Suikoden spiritual successor you were discussing. It’s weirdly janky for what it is - I can’t in good conscience recommend the switch version even though I did play through on the switch. That said it achieved that effect of making you feel like you did when playing through Suikoden 1 anyway. Loved this special - always happy to hear about my favourite idiots.

I don't remember how I got it but I have the VHS as well though I did watch this on YouTube while working out this year.

I definitely remember watching this when it first aired in December 1995. Love the cleaver subversion of the message of Its a Wonderful Life. Will have to revisit it for the holiday season.

My "fondest" memory is my grandmother being forced to watch this B&B special because she couldn't figure out how to hit "Stop" on our VHS of Christmas special recordings (it was after the Happy Days special). "They're so VULGAR." Unfortunately, she did figure out how to tape over the Rocko's Modern Life Christmas episode in the same incident. Re: IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE, it's technically public domain, but not really thanks to corporate thuggery. From an article on the Library of Congress website: While Republic Pictures had failed to renew copyright over the film in 1974, they still retained rights to the original story, “The Greatest Gift,” and also purchased rights to the film’s music. Relying on the recent Supreme Court case Stewart v. Abend, 495 U.S. 207 (1990), Republic Pictures notified all television networks to stop playing It’s a Wonderful Life without the payment of royalties. Republic Pictures then entered into an exclusive licensing arrangement with NBC, where It’s a Wonderful Life can be seen twice a year. Republic got absorbed by Paramount, so they will continue to make sure no one gets to see IAWL for free.
