The Wayhaven Chronicles—Update+ 08/Oct/2021
🕑 Added 2021-10-08 14:26:40 +0000 UTCIt felt really good this week! I was in the zone, and although I didn't get as much editing done, I did manage to make sure I have been on top of edits from SpunkyCat from the start for Chapter 7!
But where things were really pushing forward is with Chapter 9! I was a bit worried as I was really making great progress, and enjoying the fun of the scene opening and getting to the branch split…then I realised I wanted to completely change the ending to one of the versions of Chapter 9, lol :D
It's gonna be WAY better and so much more fun, especially as it brings in some more choice-based variations in that scene, rather than based on skills or personality stats. I like when the game reacts based on what your character is doing in that moment, not just on what they've done already.
But the version I was working on felt a bit less...interesting compared to the other version I have, so I knew I had to adapt it.
Instead of getting stuck though, I moved onto the other version I'm confident about and let the other ending mull around inside my head. Then yesterday evening POOF! it totally came to me and I LOVE IT! It's so much stronger than what I had before, and I now I feel really confident people will enjoy both as much as the other.
So yeah, each version of this chapter has two different endings depending on how well your MC does during the scene, hehe! But although (BIT OF A SPOILER) what happens in Chapter 9 does have some serious impact on the overall ending of the story, it is still fun and hopefully won't be super obvious. I definitely want it to feel like you're able to enjoy yourself and not worry about choices being made, or that it's even apparent that what you're doing then might have an affect.
As I always say, Wayhaven has no wrong choices, just ones that lead to different things!
I did have another moment of major pause. I got to the point where I might possibly put in the choice of what petname the MC can call their LI if in a relationship with them (so N or F, at the moment).
But...I don't know. I would either have to narrow it down to a selection or have an input your own petname option...and honestly, I love my characters so much I don't want the possibility of people being mean to them with the input option, lol! But if I narrow it down to only a selection, there's bound to be ones that people wanted instead :D
So yeah, I've left that in for the moment as unfinished, and I'll have a proper think on it and see how I feel later.
Next week I will definitely get back to flip-flopping between editing and writing, but I was just doing so well this week I am going with it, and I'm so glad I am!

"What are you doing?" ${adam} asks as I butt the prongs of a fork up against the tip of a knife to indicate the corner of the library, where the captain always holds the event.
I glance up to find ${a_him} watching me with a wrinkle of ${a_his} nose.
"I'm laying out the scene, like you asked," I explain.
$!{a_she} lifts a brow. "With…kitchen utensils?"

You don't have to use cutlery to plan this moment out, you can also do it in a much more tactical, organised manner...but that'll be up to your MC of course! :D

These weekly updates are so great! Seeing your love for your characters, story and writing, and getting a glimpse into your process is just amazing! Honestly, the first time I heard Wayhaven was gonna be 7 books long I was super happy but I instantly started to worry that we won't get the full series...that is, before I "knew" you and started following your tumblr :D I don't have a sliver of doubt anymore! And while the waiting is agonizing (seriously, these characters are like drugs I can never get enough of), it's soooo worth it because the amount of variations and your attention to detail is just mindblowing. I'm so excited about all these branches and trying out different choices!! As for the petname, I agree that a combination of selection+input would be the best! I can already imagine giving a petname to Nate in my mothertounge, how much would he love that?🥺 ....and now I wonder if he speaks the language :D

I know I'm a tad late commenting. But when you mention this set of choice impacts the ending of the story are we talking the specific book or are we talking book 7? If you can't answer totally understand. But cough cough* totally asking for a friend lol.

I agree with SilentStormSociety. Pet names can be nice, but some people just don't want/like them so it would be great if people could choose not to use them.

For the petname situation, I think giving a few options but also allowing for user-input is probably the most balanced approach. I do understand your hesitance since the characters are your babies, and naturally, you don’t want people to be mean to them. And I’ve certainly seen the…interesting names people come up with when they have the power to choose. Hahha, the imagery of the detective using cutlery to lay out the scene gave me a good laugh. I think some presets and the option to input is good! I like the idea of seeing what petnames the LI would choose to be called and also having the choice to put my own in. F and N would surely have different tastes and it would feel like a bit of world building to see their preferences!

Would you consider adding an option to opt out of pet names entirely? As sweet as they can be, they're not for everyone. Sweetheart/Sunshine with Morgan locked in has not been my favorite. Of course, I respect your decision and it absolutely will not affect my buying every Wayhaven book and product in the future.
