A Simple Change of Mind - Chapter 10

His breathing was heavy, his whole face and body were sweaty, and he felt as if his arms and legs were going to fall off in exhaustion at any moment.
He was currently in the room of requirement facing against dumbledore, who was standing without a drop of sweat on him, completely energised for his old age.
And it was because for the last half hour, Harry had been constantly dodging spells after spells from the old wizard, and he remembered how it all started.
It was the second Sunday of September, and Harry had arrived at the headmaster's office after receiving a note from him to come to his office.
Harry had hoped, and his hopes were answered when Dumbledore told him he had invited him for their first tutoring session.
For the last two weeks, this was what Harry had been waiting anxiously for.
Since he had been informed by the dumbledore that he was going to teach him, he had been counting the days, and today was finally that day.
Their session started in the office, where Dumbledore had asked him about what he had learned, and Harry had answered him and surprised the old man with how far he had already read the book he was given.
After that, Dumbledore tested him and made him perform the spells he had learned. Harry had again impressed him with how much of a perfect grasp he already had of the spells.
Dumbledore also gave him his own very informative pointers, and Harry realised why the man was the most powerful and one of the most intelligent wizards of all time.
His understanding of spells truly showed how much deep knowledge he had in magical lore.
After that, Dumbledore decided it was time for practical training, which was the part Harry was most excited about.
But they had a problem finding a place where they could train.
They first thought about training in the open on the grounds of the school, but Harry thought it would just make it easy for other students to see them, and then the rumour would spread that he was getting tutored by the headmaster, showing his favouritism again.
So they cancelled that, but then Harry remembered the room Dobby had told him about in the previous year when he needed a place to train.
And they found dumbledore knew about the place as well, albeit accidentally.
So for the past hour, they have been here in this room, training.

After that, Dumbledore instructed him to throw his most powerful spells on the dummies provided by the room.

This exercise, according to Dumbledore, is to help a wizard or witch increase their magical core.

But if he had thought his torture was over, he was wrong because then came the most gruesome part of training, which was the dodging training.
And that was what Harry had been doing for the past half hour; he had been dodging spells thrown by Dumbledore without his wand to shield himself, as he was only allowed to dodge.
He wasn't allowed any magical help, but only his own speed and reflexes.
And it had been the most exhausting time of Harry's life.
For nonstop in the past half hour, he had been dodging, jumping, and doing everything possible he could to stay out of the way of the spells.

But Harry could really feel his limit; his legs were on the verge of giving out. He didn't know how much longer he could continue doing this because he felt as if he was going to fall down any second.
Fortunately for him, Dumbledore finally stopped firing.
“I think that's enough for today,” he said with a proud smile at his students hard work.
But Harry didn't even notice the smile because, as soon as Dumbledore called the stop, he was already falling on his back.
He lay there on the ground, spread eagle, with heavy breathing, feeling pain in every part of his body and his limbs as if they were the heaviest thing in the world.

Dumbledore chuckled. "Well, it seems like I may have gone a bit overboard with your training today.”

“But what impressed me most was how much you pushed yourself to be better." Dumbledore continued, “Your improvement today in your speed and reflexes was remarkable. You may have stated slowly and got hit with a few of the spells, but you then forced yourself to get better and began doing better and better as our session continues.”
“By the end, you were good enough that I was having a hard time hitting you with my spells." Dumbledore finished with a warm, proud smile.
"Thank you, Professor." Harry smiled back. “Even though your training method was painstaking, it was still very helpful."
“Glad you thought so, Harry." Dumbledore chucked and then turned serious. “There was one other thing I wanted to ask you, Harry.”
“What is it?” Harry asked.
“Do you know about occlumency?” Dumbledore asked as he leaned forward with his fingers intertwined.
Harry raised his eyebrows when he heard the very familiar term.
“Judgementing by your expression, I could say you do know about it,” Dumbledore said as he stared down at Harry with his intense gaze.
"I do,” Harry sighed. “Sirius told me about it and also taught me a little bit during the summer.”
"Well, that's very good, then." Dumbledore said and relaxed back in his chair. "I'm glad he did it; it made my work easier.”
"I don't understand, professor,” Harry said with furrowed brows.
"It's nothing much, Harry; occlumency was one of the magical arts I was going to teach you, so Sirius in a way made my work easier because he already taught you the basics."
Dumbledore then, with his wand, summoned a book and handed it to Harry. “This is the best book you could find in mind arts. Read it and try the steps it tells you to strengthen your mind, and then in our next session, I will test you.”
Harry looked in awe at the book with the title “The True Wonders of Mind Magic."
He looked up at the old wizard and smiled gratefully. “Thank you, professor.”
“Don't mention it, my boy." He waved at him and then noticed the time. "It seems it's breakfast time, and I believe after the morning exercise we just did, you must be hungry.”
Harry's stomach rumbled in response to his question, and his face turned red in embarrassment while Dumbledore laughed.
"I guess that's the answer to my query." dumbledore chucked, "I think you should head down and fill that empty stomach; I would there shortly as well.”
Harry nodded. "I will, professor." He then turned and practically sprinted to the hall to fill his rumbling stomach.

Harry was eating his second serving by the time Hermione finally came down for breakfast.

"Yep.” Harry nodded and took a bite of the steak. “His message came in very early today by an hogwarts elf some three hours ago, and since then, I have been with him.”

“Well...” Harry started explaining how his morning went while they both enjoyed the first meal of the day.
“I would be so jealous of you if it didn't sound so tiring,” Hermione said once he finished explaining.

“Did someone mention wood training?” Katie said as she plopped down beside Hermione and began filing her plate.

“Harry chuckled. "I think we all do.”
“By the way, Harry." Katie turned to him and looked at his exhausted state. “Why do you look like you have been through Wood's horror morning trainings again today?”
"I just had very intense exercises, nothing else." Harry lied, knowing he couldn't tell everyone he had been training with dumbledore.
Thankfully, Katie bought the lie, nodded, and went back to her meal.
Harry and Hermione continued their eating and talking while the hall began filing with the students.

“um yeah” Harry confusedly looked between the smiling Susan and the two witches, who were glaring daggers at her. “6 in the evening, on the seventh floor, I would meet you there.”
"Brilliant!” Susan exclaimed. “Don't worry, I will be there on time.”
Harry nodded, and he left with one last kiss to Hermione's cheeks and a smile at the two witches, who were still glaring at Susan but turned to smile at him.
After he was gone, Daphne and Padma turned back at Susan.
“Don't think we don't know what you are trying to do here,” Daphne said, narrowing her eyes at her.
"I don't know what you are talking about; Harry is just going to teach me how to get better at fighting,” Susan said innocently.
