A Simple Change of Mind - Chapter 12
🕑 Added 2023-12-10 10:58:23 +0000 UTCThe next day after his Quidditch trials, Harry was on his way to Great Hall, where the try-outs for the dueling competition were going to be held.
He was still feeling the rush and joy of getting selected to play the seeker and chosen to be the captain of the Hogwarts Quidditch team.
This year was already turning out to be the best and most enjoyable one to date, and the year was only just getting started.
And today might be the most excited he has been in a long time.
Because it was time for dueling.
And Harry had been desperate to know how he would fair against the best of Hogwarts.
He was excited for the previous day's Quidditch trial as well, but the rush he was feeling right now was bigger than before.
Having his wand in his hand and facing others in a fight had always fuelled Harry's nerves with adrenaline and the deep-seated hunger to crush his opponent.
And today, there were going to be many who would get crushed by him, no matter how much older his opponent would be. Harry would make sure to make it clear that one of the spots on the dueling team was his.
And he would leave no doubt that no one could beat him.
Walking in the great hall through the big doorway, Harry stopped and looked around the completely different-looking hall.
The tables of the four houses were nowhere to be seen; instead, there was a big stage covering the most of the space, and on that stage were many circles of equal sizes, probably for the duels.
On the side of the stage connected to the walls were two stands where the non-participating students were already sitting and ready to cheer for their friends.
But the size of the crowd of students who were participating in the try-outs was much bigger, and Harry was not surprised at all.
If there was something that filled a witch or wizard with pride, it would be beating others in a magical fight and showing how powerful you are.
Although Harry was concerned for the professors who were assigned to take these try-outs, how were they going to select seven fighters among the hundred that had come to take part?
Seeing Padma and Hermione from the corner of his eyes, sitting in the stands, Harry made his way to them.
"Hey, Padma Hermione,” Harry greeted them with a smile.
“Hey Harry,” both smiled back at him.
“Are you two sure you don't want to take part?” Harry said, nodding towards the big crowd on stage.
"No, Harry,” Hermione shook her head. “We know what we two are best at, and dueling isn't one of them." She said humbly, and Padma nodded with her.
Harry didn't argue back and accepted their answer; after all, he knew that even though they were both very handy with a wand, they wouldn't get into the team.
And either way, those two were already on the final team of the quiz competition.
“So then, are you two going to spend your whole day here?” he asked them.
Padma nodded. "Yep, we are going to be here the whole day supporting our friends.”
“And who are those friends?” Harry asked, feigning ignorance.
Padma smirked “Daphne and Susan, of course,” she replied innocently.
Harry's eyes widened, and he put his hand on his chest. "Padma, I thought I was your friend,” he said in mock pain.
Padma and Hermione giggled at his acting, and Harry smiled and chuckled with them, dropping his act.
"Are you ready for today, Harry?” Hermione asked once they calmed down.
Harry nodded and winked at her. “You know I am Mione."
“Don't be so arrogant." Hermione scolded him half-heartedly, “There could be someone better than you who might beat you.”
Harry heard the whistle alerting that the try-outs were about to start, and he turned to join the crowd, but before then, he looked over his shoulder at her and smirked, “Do you really believe that?”
Hermione snorted and shook her head.
‘Of course, she didn't’
Harry looked in the crowd for someone, and when he found them, he smiled and weaved his way in the crowd to his target.
“Hey girls,” he said, wrapping his arms around the shoulders of his friends from Hufflepuff and Slytherin.
“Hey Harry,” Susan impishly smiled at him and took the chance of being so close to him by grabbing his dangling hand on her and squeezing it between her huge tits.
Not wanting to be outdone by her, Daphne stepped closer to him and rubbed her lush body on his “Hello Harry.” She practically purred, batting her eyelashes at him.
Harry wanted to curse and bless his current situation.
He had two very hot girls in his arms fighting for his affection, making him feel blessed and happy with his luck.
But at the same time, both of those minxes were doing these things in a crowded room, and Harry had to use his occlumency skills to keep his dick down and not embarrass himself.
“Ready for your try-outs!" He said in a straining voice as he tried his best not to let his eyes and hands wander the voluptuous bodies of the two girls under his arm.
"Absolutely," Daphne replied confidently, while Susan nodded eagerly.
"I know you are praying that you get an opponent that you don't like, so that you can beat their asses for your own satisfaction,” Harry smirked down at Daphne.
"Harry, what makes you think that?” Daphne replied back innocently.
Harry snorted, and Susan giggled at the poor attempt at showing innocence by their Slytherin friend.
They both knew Daphne had already made a list where she had written down the names of individuals she wanted to take her vengeance against.
A sharp whistle broke their friendly banter, and they looked ahead to see Professor Flitwick commanding everyone's attention.
Harry pulled his arms off the girls and stood straight as both Daphne and Susan did, their faces seething and their posture ready for their trials.
“Welcome everyone to the try-outs of this year's Tri Wizard dueling competition,” Flitwick began in his squeaky voice.
"Now, as you already know, in this competition, all three schools will have a seven-member team, so to choose those seven fighters, we have separated all of you students into seven different brackets.”
With the wave of his wand, a big board appeared, and on the board were all the names of the participating students. Then, with another wave of his wand, the names were separated and divided into seven different brackets, as Flitwick said.
“I know what you are thinking—why did I do that?” Flitwick continued, "I did this to simplify the selection process because of the high number of participants.”
“If you see there are seven different brackets now, what will happen is that all the students under each bracket will compete against each other in a knockout format until only one remains, and the seven winning students of each basket will be the seven fighters who will represent our school.”
Harry raised his eyebrow, feeling impressed by how simple the process of selection professors have made among so many students.
“Now the order of your fights is like this." Professor Flitwick stabbed his wand at the board, and a tournament-style knockout tree was formed under each bracket with the names of everyone.
"Well, it seems all of us have a chance to get selected,” Harry whispered to Daphne and Susan.
"Hmm.” Daphne nodded, then frowned. “But only one of us, between me and Susan, will go through since we are in the same bracket.”
Susan nodded, chewing her lips as she thought about fighting her own friend.
Harry stayed silent as he looked at the board and confirmed what Daphne was saying.
They were both in the same bracket, and interestingly, they will only face each other if they both get into the final.
What were the chances that both friends would have to fight each other for the honour of representing their school?
Harry didn't know, and he couldn't tell if he wanted to see them fight or not.
"Well, whatever is going to happen will happen, so do your best and forget about that right now,” Harry told them with a smile.
His words had an effect, as he got two warm smiles back.
“Attention students!” Flitwick yelled. “The try-outs are going to start, so I need you to go to the section where your brackets are assigned.”
At once, the crowd began parting as each student went to their bracket section.
“Best of luck,” Harry wished the girls and gave them a hug.
“To you too, Harry." Both of them wished him back, and then they separated.
Harry looked around for his bracket, which was number 4, found it at the right corner of the room, and made his way there.
Once there, he stood with others and waited for his first duel turn.
Their group invigilator was Professor Vector, who started their trials.
Harry stood back and observed other fights before noticing his would-be opponents.
His eyes drifted to the knockout tree, and he counted the many opponents he had to fight on his way to the final.
And since each bracket had 16 students, that means there were three fights before you could reach the finals.
Which means there were four opponents on Harry's way to the spot in the team.
His name being called out pulled him out of his wandering, and Harry looked up to see Professor Vector staring at him.
“Mr. Potter, it's your turn,” she told him firmly.
Harry nodded and then climbed the stage and entered the circle where his fight was going to take place.
He then looked at the other side and found his first opponents.
Terry Boot, his Ravenclaw yearmate.
"Now, contestants, you will first bow to each other.”
Harry stepped forward at the same time Terry did, and both bowed at each other and then stepped back.
“You will begin your duel when I tell you to. Is that clear?” Professor Vector told them strictly.
Harry nodded just as Terry did, and both took their fight stances.
Harry took his own unique, unorthodox stance where he stood completely sideways, his head facing forward and his wand down, and his posture was loose and relaxed.
In this stance, he reduces the area for his opponent to aim at him, and his loose body was ready to attack or dodge as needed.
And because of his wand down towards the ground, he used it to confuse his enemy about whether he would attack or defend.
Personality Harry always preferred to defend first and let the opponent shoot because he preferred to study his opponent's gameplay and then attack.
Sirius had dubbed his stance 'lazy lion’ to show how he always looked lazy to his opponent but was always ready to treat them apart.
Harry then noticed Terry's stance, and he held his snort back. Like a true Ravenclaw, Terry was in what was called a traditional stance.
His right leg was forward, his body was leaning, and his posture was completely stiff.
It was a sign that he was going to attack first, and Harry was happy with that.
“On 3,” Professor Vector said, “1.. 2...3!”
“STUPEFY”
Just as she finished, as Harry had expected, Terry attacked first and fired his first spell.
"STUPEFY"
Harry tried not to cringe at the loudly spoken spell by his opponent, and instead of shielding himself, he simply sidestepped the poorly aimed attack.
Not to be dithered by it, Terry admirably continued throwing spells.
“EXPELLIARMUS”
“INCARCEOUS"
“REDUCTO"
Unfortunately for Terry, each of his spells was calmly sidestepped by Harry, who was jumping around the stage like a rabbit with his wand still facing the ground.
After the 8thcontinued missed, Terry was getting tired and frustrated, which was resulting in making his aim so much worse that Harry didn't even need to dodge.
Just as another stunning spell sailed past him without even touching him, Harry decided to end this fight.
For the first time in the fight, he put his wand up and, almost silently whispering, fired a three-spell chain.
“Expelliarmus" “Stupefy” “Incarcerous”
Terry, who was too tired to even move, didn't even have any chance before he was hit by the three spells one after another.
His wand jumped from his hand. The stunning spell stunned him and skidded him back on the stage, and the last spell bound him in ropes.
And just like that, Harry ended the fight with only three spells.
Nodding towards the shocked Professor Vector, he made his way down the stage to wait for his next fight.
There was only one thing going on in the minds of other students in his group.
'I hope I don't get him next.
Leaning back on the wall, Harry looked around at the other fights, and he saw Daphne just like him, waiting for her next fight as she had already defeated her first opponent.
Noticing him looking, she threw a wink at him, and Harry winked back at her.
He then saw Susan finish her opponent by using a freezing spell on their feet and making them stick to the ground.
Harry smiled proudly. This was one of the tricks he had taught her, and he was impressed by how smoothly she had used it.
After a while, his name was called again, and it was quarterfinal time.
He walked to the dueling circle and then saw who his opponent was, and his lips curled into a smile as he saw Cho Chang as his opponent.
“Good luck,” Harry muttered while bowing.
"Thanks; I would need it against you." Cho replied back.
Harry shook his head, smiling, and then once in his stance, his smile disappeared, and no emotion was left on his face.
“Began!” Professor Vector barked, and the fight began.
But this time, unlike Terry, Cho decided not to attack and waited for Harry to make his move first.
Harry smirked and internally praised Cho for learning from his previous fight.
Unfortunately for her, it was of no use.
Just because Harry tactically doesn't attack first doesn't mean that he doesn't know how to put pressure on his opponent.
In a blink of an eye, his wand was up, and Harry cast a series of different spells at Cho.
Cho, acting quickly, threw a shield, but it only held for a while, and after the third spell, it broke, and she had to dodge the next spell rolling to her left, and once she was up, she erupted another shield.
Seeing her exactly where he wanted, Harry threw three more spells, and then instead of at her, he fired a smoke screen spell ‘Fumus’ at the ground in front of her.
Cho's eyes widened as the spell struck the ground, and a cloud of smoke erupted in front of her, blocking her vision.
Harry, using the cloud to his advantage, slid down to his right, and from that angle, he threw his earlier three-chain spell at her.
Cho, who was competitively unaware that there were three spells coming at her from the sides, didn't react in time and was hit with them, and she was left in the same defeated state as Terry was.
Disappearing the smoke with his wand, Harry walked to the unconscious Cho, and after unbinding her, he 'renevated' her.
Cho blinked her eyes open and then groaned, seeing him standing over her. "I lost." She then took his outstretched hand, and Harry pulled her up.
Giving her wand back, Harry said, “You tried your best.”
Cho snorted, "Harry, my best was nowhere near enough to even make you worry; you are pretty good." She praised him, smiling up at him.
“Don't be so down on yourself." Harry replied, encouraging her, “If it was someone else you had to face, you might have defeated them.”
“It doesn't change the fact that I still lost Harry." Cho huffed
Harry chuckled, and then both of them went down the stage. Cho then went to the stands to watch the remaining fight.
Once again, back at his spot against the wall, Harry looked around the other fights and found an interesting sight.
Daphne was fighting against Draco Malfoy, of all people.
Harry smirked as he looked at the fierce face of Daphne, who, despite being known for not showing emotion, had a very evident hatred on her face as she glared daggers at her opponent.
Anyone looking into her eyes could clearly see how much Daphne had been waiting for this moment, and Harry felt excited to see what she would do to the ferret, who was ignoring Daphne like she was of no concern to him.
Once the fight started, Daphne was on the front foot, attacking, and what followed might be the most humiliating few minutes for Malfoy.
Daphne, in simple words, played with the blonde punce, not even giving a moment of breath as she kept showering spells at him relentlessly but at the same time calculatingly.
At the start, Malfoy was able to shield himself, but soon Daphne’s spells became overwhelming and shattered his shield, leaving him defenceless.
Seeing her opportunity, Daphne threw a series of spells, ending the duel and beating him, but not without some spiteful vengeance on her part.
After the spells were hit, Malfoy was left upside down, bound with the ropes, his wand far away from him, and his dangling head shiny bald without a single hair left.
The crowd burst out laughing at his funny and humiliating state.
Harry as well snickered behind his hand and threw a wink and smile at Daphne when she caught his eye.
Daphne smirked back at him flirtingly and strode down past the hanging and screaming ferret with her head held high.
Her cunning and desire for vengeance against people who hurt her or her loved ones had always made her more attractive in Harry's eyes.
Then it was time for Harry's semifinal fight, and this time it was against a big 7th-year Hufflepuff.
The fight went as the last two did.
Even though his opponent this time was more experienced and powerful than the last two, he was still easy for Harry to beat.
The big 7thyear believed in all-out attacking and no defending.
His spell repertoire was respectable, and his spells packed power, but Harry had no difficulty shielding and dodging his spells.
For a straight couple of minutes, Harry kept dodging and moving around the stage in a circle, forcing his opponent to do the same in his parallel.
And even though the Hufflepuff impressively kept attacking, he forgot about where he was and fell into Harry's trap.
By dodging and slowly moving in a circle, Harry had made his opponents not notice that he was moving in a circle with him, and in no time, the 7th year was in the same spot as Harry at the start of the fight.
And what he wasn't aware of was that Harry had changed that spot into a swamp at the start of the fight by using a silent transfiguration spell.
And before the big guy knew what was happening, he was half feet deep inside the ground and was still going.
Confused by the lack of movement in his feet and the muddy feeling, the Hufflepuff looked down and was shocked to find himself in a swamp.
His small moment of shock was all Harry needed, as again, with a spell chain, he left his opponent defeated.
"Ingenious,” Professor Vector muttered, left impressed by Harry's plan.
“Thank you,” Harry said to her.
Vector, who was not expecting him to hear her, was startled and shook her head. “Fights by fights, you keep impressing me, Mr. Potter," she complimented him, giving him a smile.
Harry smiled back and bowed at her, grateful for her compliment.
After that, he was ready to go down the stage but was stopped by Professor Vector.
“Mr. Potter," she called, and Harry turned back to her. “Your final opponent is here; you don't need to go off the stage.”
Harry stopped and turned back to see the sole remaining contestants who were making their way up the stage for the final.
Shrugging his shoulder, Harry climbed back, and then, after the stage was cleared off of any spell damage by Professor Vector, he and his final opponent were facing each other and sizing each other up.
Harry was slightly surprised to see his opponent because he recognised her.
She was the 7th-year Slytherin and this year's Head Girl, Audrey Rosier.
Meeting in the middle, both of them bowed.
“Just because you defeated your weak opponents, Potter, don’t think you are unbeatable.” Audrey whispered quietly. Staring at him mid-bow with her dark, calculated eyes.
“We will see about that," Harry whispered back, smirking.
They both stepped back and took their stances.
Looking at her interesting professional stance, the challenge in her eyes, and the smirk on her face, Harry knew this was the fight he had been waiting for all day.
He felt a sense of excitement spread through his body, feeling the hard fight he was going to have.
“Begin!”
Professor Vector began the fight, but both opponents stayed where they were, both of them waiting for the other to make the move first.
Harry mocked his eyebrow at her in challenge and received the same reply.
This was going to be interesting.
Deciding to act first, Harry faked a move to his left and instead stepped to the right and threw a quick spell at her.
But Audrey was ready; she blocked the spell with her shield, and as if that was what she was waiting for, she quickly sprang into attack.
Dispelling the shield, she whipped her wand, and with an ‘ignis avis' she conjured a flock of fire birds and sent them at him.
Harry smiled. For the first time today, his opponent was using a transfiguration spell.
Unfortunately for Audrey, transfiguration was Harry's second favourite subject.
Swinging his wand like a sword, Harry destroyed the conjured aflame birds into a small piece, but his victory was short-lived.
Audrey was ready for him, and she threw a big ball of water at him that was almost as big as Harry.
Harry stepped back, and thrusting his hands forward, he stopped the water ball in the air, shocking Audrey.
And then, with the stab of his wand, he blasted the ball, and then, twirling his wand in a circle, he turned the many water droplets into sharp ice shards.
Whipping his wand, Harry banished the ice shards at Audrey.
Audrey, seeing the projectiles coming, knew she wouldn't be able to shield herself without getting hit once.
So she jumped aside, rolling on the ground, and she kept rolling, dodging the dangerous shards that got stuck in the ground.
Rolling around, dodging the last of the shreds, she looked up and was shocked to see a horde of conjured animals coming towards her.
With a series of blasting spells, she destroyed the conjured figure, but Harry kept them coming.
Feeling frustrated and tired by all the work she had to put in already just to defend herself, Audrey decided to use a stronger spell.
She spun around in a circle with her wand pointing forward and created a sharp wind blizzard that crushed all of Harry's conjured animals.
Coming out of her spin, Audrey decided to bring the fight to Harry and decided it was her turn to surprise him.
She kneeled down on the ground, and after stabbing her wand, she yelled ‘Tonitruum!’ and a barrage of thunder spread through the ground from her wand travelling towards Harry.
Harry's eyes widened a little bit seeing the impressive, powerful spell work by Audrey; he had thought she would be too tired after defending against his conjuration.
But it's seemed she really was worthy of her position as head girl.
Stepping away a few steps from the coming thunder towards him, Harry also kneeled down, stabbed his wand, and whispered, ‘desertum harenae’
With his command, the ground beneath him turned into dessert sand, completely nullifying the thunder as it got absorbed into the sand.
Audrey, who was expecting to finally hurt her opponent, was instead left stunned seeing the quick thinking and spell knowledge of Harry.
Harry smirked, seeing his opponent's shocked stare, and silently chuckled as Audrey hadn't realised how she had unintentionally given him a way to defeat her.
Pointing his wand behind her, Harry threw a gust of hot wind and melted all the ice shards impaled on the ground.
Before Audrey could look behind her and see what he had done, she felt water under her feet, and a second later, she realised her mistake as her own spell backfired against her.
“AHHH”
A scream of pain left her mouth as her spell connected with the melted water and shocked her.
But still showing a mental power that impressed Harry, she jumped out of the water and breathed a sigh of relief when her body stopped electrifying.
Unfortunately, as she was taking a breather after the shock, she was not able to even see, let alone dodge Harry's final attack.
A crisscrossing vein of plant erupted from the ground and tied her from toe to head, binding her so tightly that she couldn’t even use the wand in her hand.
The only thing she could move were her eyes, and when she did, she saw Harry calmly walking towards her and plucking her wand from her hand, ending the duel.
Harry sliced his wand down, and the veins dropped Audrey and went back into the ground.
Audrey rubbed her wrists and mumbled, “Merlin Potter, you are really good. Do you know that?”
"I do." Harry shrugged. “But I must say, your transfiguration skills are amazing.”
“Thank you,” Audrey blushed and then sighed. “But it still wasn't enough to beat you.”
“Don't be so harsh on yourself." Harry said, comforting her, “If you were in any other bracket, you would have won.”
"I know, but I'm happy I was in yours; at least I could say I lost only to the best of Hogwarts.” Audrey grinned at him.
It was Harry's time to blush. As he rubbed his neck, his eyes travelled down to her chest, and he noticed her shirt being ripped, showing a sweaty cleavage. "Um, you should fix that,” he mumbled, shyly nodding at her chest.
Audrey cocked her eyebrow, and when she looked down, she understood what Harry was pointing at.
With her wand, she fixed her shirt and then smirked naughtily at him. “Did you see what you saw?” she teasingly asked him.
Harry, instead of being shy, boldly nodded and replied, "Yep, I did. You have nice tits.”
Audrey, not expecting his answers, giggled, shook her head, and stepped closer to him. "Oh, how much I wish you were in my year; I would have snatched you long ago." She purred softly, rubbing her fingers on his chest.
Before the spluttering Harry could answer, she winked at him and walked away down the stage, swaying her ass.
Harry shook his head to bring himself out of the shock of what just happened and trotted to Professor Vector, who was waiting for him.
“You have left me mighty impressed today, Mr. Potter." She told him with a smile, “None of your opponents stood a chance against you.”
“It makes all the work I did fruitful to get a compliment like this from you,” Harry expressed his gratitude.
“It's because you deserve it." She said firmly, “After seeing your performance today, I am confident we can win the competition.”
“I would try my very best,” Harry promised her with a hand to his chest.
"I know you would,” Vector giggled. "Now I go and sit with your friends who have been supporting you and wait for others finals to finish, and then the final list will be declared.”
Harry nodded and then stepped down the stage and towards where Hermione and Padma were sitting.
He was expecting them to be waiting for him with a smile, but he noticed their faces in worry and their attention somewhere else.
When he looked towards where they were looking, he saw the reason for their tense faces.
Daphne and Susan were facing each other in the final for a spot on the team.
Seeing them face off without any emotion on their faces as they got ready to fight each other, Harry felt a torrent of emotion.
First was the nervousness seeing the two girls he liked against each other, but there was also the feeling of excitement, which he knew both of them were experiencing as well.
Daphne and Susan were two very competitive witches. And Harry knew them; as much as they loved each other, they both wanted to see who was the better fighter.
And even though Harry knew Susan was better since she had started dueling right after she got her wand because of her aunt, he was looking forward to seeing how much harder Daphne could make it for her.
Instead of going to Padma and Hermione, Harry stood where he was at the side and watched the anticipated fight.
On the signal of Professor Sinistra, who was the invigilator, the fight began.
And just like Harry had expected her to, Daphne struck first by throwing a red beam of stunning spell, which Susan easily blocked by her shimmering ‘protego’ shield.
But Daphne didn't stop; she kept putting relentless pressure on Susan by throwing spells one after another while at the same time she was moving around, not staying at one place.
Harry was slightly impressed by her movements, as she made sure that Susan didn't have a fixed target to aim at.
Susan, though, showed why she was so good, as she kept her shield strong even through the relentless pressure, and when she saw a slight slip in between the spells, she finally attacked.
Sliding to her left, she aimed at where Daphne was going to step and fired a 'reducto' blasting the ground and forcing the blonde to jump backwards.
And now Susan was the one who was on the front foot and showcasing what she had learned from Harry; she threw her spells quickly and with power, something she hadn't used to before.
It was Daphne who was on defence this time, as she brought a golden shield to shield herself, and like a ballerina, she showed her impressive agility and nimble feet by dancing around the incoming spells with perfect precision.
Susan tried to pick her next step, but she missed every time as Daphne was practically floating on the floor.
Her foot movements were mesmerising, and Harry couldn't help but stare in awe.
Suddenly, after sidestepping a trip jinx, Daphne stabbed her wand at the debris on the ground from the explosion spell of Susan, and using a banishing charm, she fired them at Susan.
Susan saw the incoming and put a shield just in time that took the most debris head on, but what she missed were pieces that missed her shield.
Daphne, rotating her wand, charmed those pieces to attack Susan from her blindside.
Susan threw herself forward, missing most of the pieces, but was still struck by a few, which left scratches on her arm.
Holding her slightly bleeding arm, she looked up, and her breath hitched when Daphne, using her complimentary charms skills, joined all the debris and charmed them into a solid ball.
Brandishing her wand, she then threw the ball at the downed red head.
Susan's eyes widened as she stared up at the incoming attack. She knew Daphne was the best among them in charms, but she didn't know she was this good.
But this wasn't the end, like Daphne might have thought, because Susan had an ace up her sleeve—it was something Harry recently taught her.
She closed her eyes while swiping her wand on the ground in front of her in a semicircle shape and whispered, ‘humus murus’
