A 28 mile race against time in unexplored* Welsh mountains (with a very naughty start)
🕑 Added 2025-02-06 09:54:43 +0000 UTCGood morning $4 Patreons!
Last weekend I decided to brave the cold and go for a run through the mountains, starting near Llangollen in North Wales and ending in the village of Rhydymwyn, mostly following the famous Offa's Dyke footpath.
Things didn't get off to a great start when the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct was closed for construction, and immediately after that I realised that my route hadn't properly loaded onto the GPS. The question became, can I navigate to the end point in time to get home for the David Bowie tribute act? or will the icy, debris strewn paths of the Berwyn and Clwydian mountain ranges prove too much?
*unexplored by me

After watching the first 2 minutes: Do not try this at home! I knew someone who lost his actual life doing exactly what you did there. Well, it was dark, he was probably very drunk, it was winter, he was in worse shape and there was a low head dam right next to the bridge he tried to cross this way (at least that's what is the most likely scenario). I don't want to be alarmistic or anything, its just good to see that this not on youtube proper and honestly there wasn't too much danger here. If you are inclined to do something like this sober, you might end up like my acquaintance once you are too drunk to stop the impulse. Peace and Love.

'fucking dogs...' I tend to agree , that and endless rubbish
Wes Marshall
But will the album cover be in a location easy to locate?
Eric X
Straight line mission across Japan with Ludwig? He speaks Japanese allegedly.
Salim Rashid
where I grew up many of the dogs people had were for home protection, pits, bullies, the like. They are bred to be vicious and menacing to anyone that isnt their immediate owner(s). If you grew up in a very nice neighborhood where everyone had toys or care free dogs then you may not have had to tread lightly around dogs.

I have to ask, have you had bad experiences with dogs in the past? I'm always a bit confused by how scared you act, I've not once met a dog or frankly any common animal that wouldn't calm down with some calming words and standing my ground. I wouldn't go run towards a calf with its mum either but generally here in switzerland there's nothing to fear

Just wondering - did that "earth-shattering" Geodetective video ever drop? I remember references to it in another videos but not sure if I just missed it...
Dave
That viaduct at the beginning made me feel queasy. Couldn't have walked over that!
Hannah Samuels-Lyons
Thank you. Iβm willing to wait it out of course. I have complete faith in your musical talents and I just know it will be worth it
tom davies
Cheers James hope this (and the match) didn't disappoint :)

tom davies
I'll try my best Connor. Thank you!
tom davies
Cheers Zac. Glad I landed that one having just been informed there was a path running right underneath it.
tom davies
What a lovely place to work. I might run the whole thing one day so I'll look out for you!
tom davies
Very rarely indeed Ewoud. I'll get the hang of it one day though.
tom davies
haha. She got lucky that she was a child. I spared her a mouthful.
tom davies
Cheers Nath :)
tom davies
It was hard to appreciate his beauty at the time!

I screw myself every time.
tom davies
Ah nice! didn't know that. Keen to sort out the Garmin issue once and for all too.
tom davies
Amen to that. Thanks Steven!
tom davies
Stunning and mystical. Did you manage to check out my Glyndwr way vid from a couple of years ago?
tom davies
Cheers Lard!
tom davies
Oh really? I finally said a Welsh thing right! Cheers Sam!
tom davies
It was completed some time back, I'm just having trouble with shooting the album cover. Very frustrating! It will then have to be manufactured and distributed so it could be another couple of months sadly :(
tom davies
Thanks for signing up Noel!
tom davies
Cheers Dylan! I've thought about it and you never know, but for me it feels too farmland heavy - something I've increasingly tried to avoid..
tom davies
Funnily enough there is an ice-cream van sound effect on the album! You'll have to really listen out for it though. Glad you enjoyed the vid mate!
Stuart Duncan
Another smashing vid. Though the thought of you being followed by an ice cream van was quite disturbing. Perhaps on of the tracks on your new album could feature this ice cream van in some cleaver, disguised, synth shaped version.
Dylan
Great vid as always, Tom! Any interest in Northern Ireland as the last part of the UK unconquered with a straight line?
Noel Jacob
New subscriber here Tom! Great video and cant wait for Scotland!
Hannah Samuels-Lyons
How long until your album Tom? Iβm sure you said it was nearly ready and Iβm so eager to buy it
Sam Davies
Ah it's finally happened - my home on a GW video! Nice pronunciation of Llangollen, Tom.
tom davies
There will still be geoguessr Dom! But it won't be as frequent as it used to be.
LordLard
Great stuff as ever Tom - and Scotland in March :D
Ian Wepre
I live in Deeside, it's a great area for views and countryside! Loads of nice walks and places to explore! Would love to see more Welsh content!
Steven Hocker
I relate to the period of inactivity in January, only takes one day to bare the cold to start making it a habit. Need to get out in the next couple days, great video as always
Ed Shelton-Richards
Tom you should just use the Strava app for your routes. Can just draw a route and download it for offline if you have no service!
Paul Baker
The Tom Davies kiss of death, "It all looks good from here."
Ollie Spicer
Well, that's me and the gf's night sorted! π
Imraduin
Beyond excited for the next Scotland attempt!! It was heartbreaking when you and Greg got the police called on you after all you so successfully got though that time. Also gave me a good laugh when you "came up" with a song and it was Master of Puppets ππ
Imraduin
Beautiful Wolfhound you met, but I understand if you're not a fan of unleashed dogs ^^
Nathan Smith
Something something foreshadowing :D Always a good day when tom releases an adventure
wortwicht
Never a bad day, when there is a new adventure video by you. When do we get the outtakes of you berating the 11yo dog owner? π
Ewoud van Aalst
Nothing ever goes just swimmingly for you now does it Tom :)
Dominic John
No more geo guesser ? Donβt get me wrong Tom, I enjoy the adventures. I found your channel when wales 1 came out but I do enjoy both
Petronella Ford
I live on the Offa's Dyke path. I even volunteer at the Offa's Dyke centre! Great to see it on one of your videos, but come further south so I can say hi :D
Zac Vernon
Storror would of been proud of that canal gap / water challenge at the start! Nice mission Tom!
Connor Richardson
Legend Tom, please donβt ever stop making this stuff!
Tamzin
So excited to watch!! Your videos make my day π«Ά
Jack L
Just wanted to say mate, you videos have been a saving grace for me on the long nights with our newborn. Unfortunately he's got CMPA so it's been particularly rough, but having some videos from yourself to watch at 3am has been amazing
james dollard
Looking forward to watching this later on, after the match ππ
