HAHA you're right on the money! If you read ahead on this chapter (it's all completed up on the Secret Club btw) he thinks/says some of these exact same things!!! It's very much a way to protect himself.

As someone that has worked through being a people pleaser, this page really resonates with me. Even though there was a major factor of personal gain for Sal in the way he shifted personas to match people’s expectations, there’s also a safety to it. You predict what people will say, do, and want, and you react with the response you think they will accept most readily. It’s a way to feel in control and keep others at a distance by not showing who you really are. No chance for rejection if you don’t give them anything real to reject. Not sure if Sal is motivated by this as well, but I can see how it would be used to protect him, too.
