regarding the Chinese you recognised, you are correct, they are Chinese letters originally. The Japanese use Chinese letters in their writings, and call it "Kanji". they don't have the same meanings and readings as they are in Chinese but the original shapes remain. The Japanese languages meshes its own alphabets (hiragana and katakana) with kanji in writing.
