I think it depends, if the end result of drama brings them closer its a good thing. I think people misinterpret Leonard and Penny's relationship quite often, particularly, they forget that Penny has commitment issues, that's clearly the point behind the early episode where she considered breaking up with him. But the point is that as much as she has trouble navigating a serious relationship she does love Leonard even if she isn't comfortable saying it yet. I always thought that the writers understood them more than the audience watching the show

Yeah, it’s nice to see how Leonard’s gotten better at communicating with others thanks to her and Penny’s becoming more open to learning in general thanks to him

Also when they are good, I feel like Penny and Leonard are one of my major comfort ships. I like the whole opposites attract quality of it all. And how Penny does make Leonard feel more comfortable with himself
