It was 18 _in some states_ for a while. When I was an undergrad in northern Indiana, Indiana was a 21 state, but Michigan was an 18 state, so lots of the guys would make a road trip north. The road on the Michigan side of the state line was lined with liquor stores and bars. On the Indiana side, the road was lined with Indiana State Police and St. Joseph County Sheriff vehicles. Assuming that you got past the cops, the uni had a no-alcohol-in-the-dorm policy, so much creative thought went into ways to get cases and/or kegs over the fence and into the dorms. While I was there, the policy was expanded to no-alcohol-period, even at home game tailgaters; this policy annoyed the hell out of many alums. Apparently, it was traditional to have enough alcohol to float a battleship when USC visited. Some students, ah, lacked respect for uni policy; I particularly recall the gentleman who built a pyramid of beer cans that reached the ceiling in the corridor outside his room. Of course, that particular gentleman also got into serious trouble during the Great Strip Backgammon Tournament between our (guys) dorm and a neighboring (girls) dorm. He was also on the wrestling team and was one of those involved in the Nude Elephant Walk through downtown Houston. That one nearly got wrestling removed from the school athletics program. Alcohol was heavily involved in both incidents. Plus, of course, the pyramid. The Feds ended the 18/21 state nonsense by threatening to withhold highway money from any state that didn't go 21.

I hope she's a happy drunk and not any of the other kinds.

It was 18 for a while. Too many incidents and accidents caused it to be moved back to 21. Also loving the furry handicapped space marking

cannot recall why they didn't make it all 18. probably had trouble convincing all the states to do so.

If memory serves, from what I read, when they lowered the age to join the military to 18, many states lowered the drinking ages to 18 as well. But many didn't. Which meant that many 18-20 year olds crossed state borders to drink, then drove back. bad combination. So the federal government just made it 21 everywhere.
UnDrewsual
Well, there are arguments in the US to lower the legal drinking age to 18, since you can vote, smoke, drive, and even JOIN THE MILITARY but can't have a beer.

Oh dear. He's going to have to try to handle her (and those spikes) while she's blitzed.

Yeah, for use Aussies, 21st isn't a huge deal. We got to drive, vote and drink from 18.
