It might be good to note that much of those issues happened to small segments of players, and I expect the majority of people did not run into significant problems. As to the question of the viability of not keeping the whole thing in a single install, I have a feeling that right now it's pushing all sorts of envelopes, and what we are seeing here are just the warning lights going off. For instance, the update from ren'py 7.3.5 to renpy 7.6.1 was because of inexplicable cache crashes (I presume because crawling trough the image index was taking up so much time it couldn't clear out old images fast enough, because it certainly wasn't running out of memory on my system, and no amount of cache size increase would solve the issue). Then there's the 2/3 minute load time at this point, whenever I want to test a change to script (and starting up the game also takes half a minute now even on modern systems). Release builds now take up to 20 minutes or so each (x3 for all platforms), and are quite unwieldy because of the size. And the RAM footprint keeps on growing for no apparent reason or use. All in all, I feel it's best not to tempt fate and run the risk that I run into an issue that I can't upgrade my way out of, or that leaves an even larger segment of players with problems. But I do intend to make hopping from one install to the other as seamless as possible. Finally, wrt larger than 2GB installs on Android, yeah, I heard about that (APKX I think?), and I've prototyped having a high quality image pack download option, and that seems viable too, so there's angles of attack available. But in this release, the size of the images weren't an issue. With some higher compression and tweaking some settings, I found I could still easily fit all of Chapters 1-7 into a 2GB APK. The problem seems to be the number of images (and the footprint of that number in memory), because the actual image data itself is always loaded from storage on demand, and not kept in RAM memory.

I use an upper middle class 64-bit laptop with NAV and I don't remember any particular niggles. I think NR said that the 'chunking' for our environments would be barely visible. And, I can understand why chopping bits up can reduce maintainability as well as performance issues. I'll be happy with what I'm given when Chapter 8 arrives!

Is it feasible to have an all-in-one version, too, or would it be too much overhead?

I've always been a PC kid and it's hard for me to even imagine playing these kinds of games on an android device of whatever incarnation. I update my PCs at least every four years so that they are usually on the stronger side regarding performance and I also don't use these crappy antivirus tools like MA. So in the end I was lucky as I had absolutely no problems in regards to the technical aspects of the game. And despite the fact that my glasfibre internet connection is still to be coming and I'm stuck on a poor download rate I still regret that you felt the need to split the game into another executable for whatever is coming up in the future. I personally prefer to have a game as one big standalone chunk to keep it all well organized and tidy. But if those android systems are still to be considerd for future support it probably can't be helped I guess.

I read on a Samsung Android tablet and had no problems for which I do consider myself lucky. I do have to admit to getting a lot of virus warnings recently, (I've tried with both Norton and Avast and both have similar problems,) it seems to me that most, if not all of the warnings I have been getting are ports of games that have a second storage location for saves so they dont get deleted when the game is uninstalled. I guess this is considered dangerous behavioyr because the app is writing to storage outside of what it has been assigned. However, not all ports trigger this warning, so I could easily be wrong. As for the VN taking up too much space, I can only suggest having a word with estrada777 or wills747, both have been producing ports recently that exceed the android 2gb limit, using a large manually copied .rpa file. Presumably they must have run into similar issues and may be willing to offer advice or even to work with you on an 'official' port. As always, best wishes for your continued efforts with the story, it has been and Im sure will continue to be, a pleasure.

TheKid

I always read.

You post it, I read it. The tech side of things seems to be an unavoidable issue. I had no problems with chapter 7 but did get virus warnings for the 32bit exe of other visual novels. From my personal POV it was a great update.

Arthur Levesque

I read them all; but if I'm ever not interested, I can just skip it and leave it for everyone else.

Maruad

Very nice naval. You are to be complimented on it.
