I just love the beginning of the chapter. He gave them a summary and then onto the calculations.

This is a genuine question, but telling about it would be a spoiler. However, I can still tell that you will find the answer to this question much sooner than you think!

As explained in that chapter (FLTL. 205), 468 gold was generated from coal mining, apart from 23 gold from the custom duties (border taxes), for a total of 491 gold for that month. Do keep in mind that this is a reference/average month, and the actual revenue would vary from month to month. However it is okay to take that as an average estimate. This way the estimated yearly revenue would be 491*12 = 5892 gold, assuming they were able to sell coal in the winter months, which they can't. Taking that into account, their yearly revenue would be somewhere around 4900 gold, since no merchants come to buy coal (or to charge them border taxes) in the winter months. However, the cost of 345 per month would also be much lower in the winter months. Since they aren't selling any coal in those months, so they don't do any mining in the winter. That means they also don't have to pay the wages to the miners in those months (which was 221 gold in the reference month Duvas had described). This way they would only be spending 345-221 = 124 gold in each of the winter months (which last somewhere around two and a half months in a usual year). That will save around 221*2.5 = 552 gold of expenses in the winter. On the other hand, while doing this saved expenses for the manor, it also negated the income which the coal miners got, which is why the living conditions for the common people became very bad in the winter months. That means instead of 345*12 = 4140 gold, they are actually spending around 3600 gold before taxes(after reducing around 550 for the winter months). That means for the whole year, their estimated revenue is around 4900 gold, and their estimated expenses are 3600 gold before taxes, or around 4550 gold after including the taxes they have to pay of 20% of revenue. That will give them an estimated yearly profit of around 350 gold, or around 30 gold per month. The previous baron used it for his own personal expenses, including spending on stuff he liked doing in Cinran. That profit is indeed a small amount, but as you can guess, Tiranat was obviously not a very profitable village, going by the state of it when Kivamus first arrived here.

I also have a question/ suggestion, I understand that Kivamus isn't a genius who knows everything and most of his projects are related to his field of engineering from his previous life (which is logical), so my question is, shouldn't he know how to make paper from the sawdust? If not, it can be easily incorporated into the story that somebody accidentally creates paper like material (most likely Syryne) if she is likely to explore and continue to expirement... or some villager accidently cooks the sawdust brick and then finds clumps of white which theh dry etc. (I simplified the suggestion) but let know since I'm curious

Hi author, I have a question regarding the finance calculation. If I understood the finance chapters correctly, an average monthly revenue is 468, now if we multiple that by 10 (2 month are exluded for the winter since they can't sell anything) we get 4680, if we take the taxi at 20% we get to 936 which is close to the 937 you mentioned. Now, For the cost it was mentioned that it was roughly 345 per month. If we multiple that by 12 months we get 4140 total cost. So if I calculate everything together (toal yearly revenue - total yearly cost - 20% taxi) ; we get 4680-4140-937= -397 in other words they are making a yearly loss of 397... can you please clarify if I understood this correctly, thanks.
