In the books at the beginning while talking to bellatrix and narcissa, Snape explained that he saved Harry in his first year because 1. He thought Harry might have powers that rival voldemort. He later gave that up as he "is just as arrogant as his father" 2. He needed to remain in Dumbledore's good graces. Also he said that he can't harm Harry at the end of this movie because Voldemort would want to finish Harry off himself. Also Snape calls himself the half-blood prince because his mom (a pure-blood) last name Prince married a muggle-born man, Tobias Snape. He wanted to lean on his pure-blood family to impress the older kids he looked up to. One being Lucious Malfoy.
