Older saves should work too. I am implementing a system right now that will prompt the player to save the game before it reaches the end of each update, so that he will know to save before the game ends.

Question: To see new content, do you need to start a new game, or will an older save still hit the new content where it's supposed to be? Asking because I don't think I'm seeing the new Jack or story progression stuff - they both seem the same as last playthrough (though I might be missing it).
