Tertius711

I think that was a given lol. Would be a real downer ending if they didn’t. Still the stakes remain high and the process by which they win remains uncertain. Stay tuned.

Efe Erişkin

So Velaryons will win the Dance then

Tertius711

You’re welcome!

Czar

Nice! Good to know this. Thank you.

Tertius711

Thanks! Anyway I’d say not any time soon since they’re focusing on the Dance but after the Dance it may very well happen.

Czar

Hi Tertius! Nice Chapter once again, kudos to you. Now since the Velaryons are the anointed ones of the Seven-Who-Are-One, I would like to explore the possibility of them conquering the Velvet Hills in Andalos. Since it was the place where The Seven appeared to Hugor. Some kind of Holy Land like in Israel/Jerusalem.

Thomas Terracciano

Thank you. Now that you mention it i do remember the appendix, I just don't recall its details.

Tertius711

Distasteful to us in the modern day perhaps but we have to consider that the Velaryons don’t see it that way and Corlys went native a long time ago. They see it as a natural thing to do that consolidates dragon blood and dragonriders and helps keep dragons under control. Personally the way I see it if it keeps dragons from proliferating and causing civil wars then let them incest all they want, it’s not hurting the common people lol. Velaryon tech has plateau’s recently honestly. All the low hanging fruit have been reached and R&D is a lot slower now. IRL this also corresponds by me no longer really paying attention to the tech side of things in favor of plot and politics. With education and etc ofc technology would still be advancing but unless stated otherwise they are still in a general are 1500s or early 1600/ tech level sans gunpowder. Did you not read the appendix posted a while back on all the military details for both the army and navy?

Thomas Terracciano

Hey Tertius, superb chapter as per usual. Few questions. Firstly, why did you make it so the Velaryons also incorporated incest? Targ or not it's just...distasteful. Secondly, at what rate is Velaryon tech advancing and at what point are they now? It has been nearly 30 years since they implemented their education system right? There should have been some minor advancements right? Finally, I know they rule the waves but how is their army? Will Corlys take inspiration from Rome and what number of trained professional soldiers are they capable of mustering? Sorry for the barrage of questions lol.

Tertius711

They're fanmade province/city names that either CK2 made or my friend Ascalon. They're all in the map attached below the chapter.

Robin

I just realized I don’t know what Mesylosh, Embrys, and Lortyr are? I tried the wiki and couldn’t find them.

Tertius711

Great points!

ha vu

Ah power, the greatest mistress of all, it can even make such anti-Velaryen people like Daemon and Gael change their minds. Their bloodline would be some of the most powerful and famous people in history. In life, you never know if something is a misfortune or a blessing, indeed. Imagine if Aegon marries Laena and all of their children married Jace and Luke's children. Though kinship never stops Victoria's grandchildren from trying to kill each other, you always have those what-ifs. People in this universe would be writing epic fanfictions about this period in the future. I can see the tragic love of Laena, Aegon, and Daeron become the basis for a soap opera.

Tertius711

Jace is a drama king lol. Define going wrong lol. The Targaryens have dragons and that makes them nigh invincible, same as the Velaryons. There's little point narratively in having things go wrong for the Targaryens before the Dance. Jace and Luke can't really forbid Baela and Rhaena from taking their children without a marital dispute lol. Stay tuned!

Tertius711

The Velaryons cannot directly interfere without provoking war, even if they do rule the waves. And besides, the Targaryens have an M.O from Aegon the Conqueror to follow. Kneel and you'll keep your lands and titles and be mostly left alone. The Targaryens only took a heavy hand in Dorne because it's Dorne. The Summer Islands are unlikely to be anywhere near as defiant. Anyway good point on Targaryen pride.

Amerdism

Maybe, but the islands are still fairly far from westeros and the Velaryons rule the waves, I doubt i'd be very hard for them to incite mass revolt there if the Targs take the islands, they maybe chill now but they have never been conqured by none summer islanders which is likely to cause a not small amount of resentmet, as will the likely forced coversions to the seven that would qickly follow and the fact westeros likely operates under a much different govermental system to the islands. To top it off its near sure fire a bunch of foreign nobles will be installed to rule, its all just not something most people would like and while managable normally, the large distance, velaryon interference and the Targaryens inability to not take a heavy handed approach does not insoire faith that they will hold on to the islands for long, atleast not wthout a huge and long investment which would greatly hamper there ability to wage war. Despite how intelligent Rhaenys is, she falls to the same fatal flaw all Targs have, their ego and pride don't let them see that they are a big part of the problem and because they can't acknowledge that and can only blame others for their short comings they've set the world up for a huge war just so they can feel good about themeselves. Course that ignores the Velaryons own instigating but the Targs did start it and have continuously antagonised what was essentially a minor vassal to become its own mini empire just to feel safe. I can say alot about the Velaryons, but Corlys and Vissera at least have enough life experience to have recognised and acknowledge their faults and have tried to curb the worst of it until Aegon happened, additionally, they atleast did try to move towards a peaceful resolution and even limited their own power and influence at the request of the Targs in the stormlands. Simply put, the Targs have backed themselves into a corner just becasue of their pride, not unlike Corlys and Vissera at Tyrosh.

Maciek

For Heaven's sake, could Jace finally tell Baela the truth, so this this multi-chapter almost Shakespeare-like musings of Corlys's heir could be FINALLY finished? Given his on-screen character is basically a miracle that he was able to keep quiet for so long.....Though I hope he and his brother have towers, keys and chains for dragons prepared, so after disclosure girls wouldn't fly to Daddy and Mummy and blurt everything in their futile attempts to keep the peace :) Rhaenys gets more and more out of control. Don't know what she's planning for Summer Isles, but if it's another conquest, the I SINCERELY hope that something will FINALLY GO WRONG for Targs. Seriously, I get that they have more flying WMDs, but they're still people, they can get hurt. Eventually sth else, that could stop invasion. Summer Isles seem too nice to be destroyed. Law forbidding offensive wars without permission? Now I REALLY wonder what will be the first action in upcoming Dance.... Who'd have though that it'll come a day when Daemon&Gael are reasonable ones ;) Seriously, there's one small glitch in their intent. Jace and Luke KNOWS that their in-laws don't trust them, so why should they agree for such meeting? Maybe they wouldn't forbid their wives, but children would be sure to stay with fathers......They could even say " We're all inclusive: everyone or no-one" :) Overally nice update. Only flaw is that we have to wait for more ;)

Tertius711

Not really. It's very easy to understand what it means.

Lino

Seems so but I still think it is a bit strange to use it out of the blue when it is not really a term in the setting or the culture presented here. I get you are taking a lot of elements from the british monarchy. But I don't really see why a basic term like that would suddenly change against all precedent. Realstically the listeners would probably be as confused as me while reading it ^^

Tertius711

We shall see. Stay tuned!

Tariel Khalvashi

Go ahead Jace, don't spare those pompous turkeys. Jaehaerys is probably pleased with the pig he put on his family because of his pride. It's a shame he won't be able to see the destruction that's coming.

Tertius711

She hasn't fully connected those dots, just like the Blacks and Greens didn't, still thinking she can make the Velaryons back down. Stay tuned to see how it goes for House Velaryon and House Targaryen in the Dance!

Tariel Khalvashi

Doesn’t Rhaenys understand that the war will take the lives of her children and grandchildren? Even if the Targaryens win, I'm sure they will have to pay the price of their own lives. It is impossible to remain unscathed in the war against the seven dragons. There will be war and I hope the Targaryens will suffer a humiliating and destructive defeat for them from the Velaryons. I hope the Velaryons don't die in this war.

Tertius711

The Summer Islands are pretty chill and they have SSC so with Aegon-style conquest (kneel and you keep lands and mostly self-rule) they could potentially do it easier. Yeah lol Rhaenys is still in that mood but as you can see it's edging her closer to the brink of war.

Tertius711

Why would you say either of them had an isolated childhood? And we haven't seen a Baela POV at all since before the timeskip.

Amerdism

Not sure how well a summer island campaign would work for the iron throne, they just went through two wars, on top of that the summer islands are very far away from Westeros, so any control there seems like it would be tenuous at best since it’d require a dragon rider or two to be stationed their permanently to keep the people in line. Also there navy may be a problem if it’s not up to the task of fight so far from home. Funny that Rhaenys still seems blind to the truth, she’s seems to still be playing the one up them game, trying to prove her house is better through glories and conquests even when they aren’t needed or useful to her house, meanwhile the velaryons have long moved on from that game to begin preparing for the inevitable war.

Felipe Astur

They have a very utopian view of relationship and marriage as a result of a very isolated childhood. And she is very blind to the consequences of the Targaryen's actions.

Tertius711

It's the normal term in the IRL British Peerage. He was created a peer, a duke, etc.

Tertius711

I mean she is the future Queen lel. As for Aegon, stay tuned. There are plans in mind for him.

Tertius711

They are pretty mature tbch. I'm not sure what you mean when you say they need to mature.

Tertius711

Jace is reflecting internally. Corlys is giving a rough summary to the audience so they understand the peerages he gives out while Jace thinks to himself all the details. Glad you like Gael and Daemon's reflecting. Stay tuned to see this proceeds!

Lino

„Created“ seems like a strange word choice for granting titles.

Felipe Astur

I'm really starting to hate Aegon….

Felipe Astur

Rhaenys rage is something to worry and Explore in the future.

Felipe Astur

In my opinion Jace and Baela need to grow up and mature because life is not black and white…. But considering the mentality of the period they are in and lack of real world Experience makes sense to have these types of attitudes.

Robin

The idea that Corlys basically read a bureaucracy chart in the middle of a party felt a little awkward. Maybe instead have Jace reflect internally, remembering the changes? I really liked Gael and Daemon’s reflecting. I’m curious to see how that conflicts with Rhaenys’s new conviction

Tertius711

Interesting point. Updated maps indeed. I've uploaded a provincial map of Velaryon territory in the chapter and I'll add the world map once that's done. Thanks for reading!

WardforAll

I feel like 360 it still fits. They recognize their daughter’s accomplishments but went right back to hating their son in-laws. Also will we be getting an updated map of Velaryon Territory?

Tertius711

Yeah it's a pretty funny 180 (not 360, 360 takes them back to where they started). As for whether it's bad timing or not, let's see. Stay tuned!

WardforAll

What’s this? Daemon and Gael actually looking at the bigger picture? I never thought id see it. Of course keeping in character their 360 turn had to come at the worst time right when Baela and Rhaena learn the truth. That’s gonna put some doubt in Velaryon prophecy.
