Better late than never! Glad to have you! I'm sorry I don't really understand what you are trying to say in your next three paragraphs. Could you rephrase it?

Key Hollow

Really late to the party here but I have been binging this fic and I really like where it is going. You mentioned a conquest of the Summer Isles by the Targaryens, Is that a plot akin to the Iron Islands where the conches will take advantage of a Targaryen deployment to destabilize the seven kingdoms while they are stretched thin ? For example, a rekindling of First Men& Andals conflict that would see the Northern forces occupied and the Riverlands in turmoil. I guess what am really asking is if the defensive stance is the cover story given to the rest of the family while further weakening of the Iron Throne is done or if it is the actual stance of the Triarch. Sorry for the long paragraph, keep up the good work !

Tertius711

1. It's highly unlikely Daemon and Gael switch their allegiance. It's just not in their interests in any way. They may now be in a Pro-Peace faction but if war breaks out, they will side with House Targaryen and the Iron Throne every time. 2. Eventually yes. Stay tuned. 3. The Velaryons are not looking to expand again until after the Dance but allying with Summer Islanders etc is far from impossible. 4. Given that we are actually going to see this war happening, I'll keep the details to myself. Stay tuned.

ElektrikRush

I have a few questions I hope you are okay with answering (they don't need to be super specific): 1. What would it take [if any] for Daemon and Gael to switch their loyalty/allegiance from the Iron Throne to the Velaryon State? 2. Will there be more children, and will the two couples reconcile again? 3. Will the Velaryons ally with the Summer Isles or other places since they can expand like before? 4. What would a Iron Throne v. Velaryons war look like [casualty rate, length of planning and actual war, reason for starting and/or ending, etc.]?

Tertius711

Good to know. Does this really change the scenario in this story? Like everything about this is high stakes and high stress. Rhaena reacted very badly but Baela was herself pretty cool headed, rational, and logical. She didn’t really shout or scream or throw things at Jace or anything. Ultimately for the security of the house and the duties that are expected of Baela, it’s only necessary that Baela understands why Jace did what he did and does not compromise it to the Targaryens. She is not obliged to give him her love and forgiveness until she chooses to do so. Again it does not matter why Jace did what he did on an emotional level. He LIED to her, betrayed her, abused her trust and has been scheming for treason and war (defensive so he claims but how is she supposed to trust that at this point?) against her own flesh and blood, her family, for years. The fact Baela reacted as rationally and calmly as she did is quite frankly a miracle and should be an indicator of her own well adjusted emotional and mental states and her ability to compose and collect herself. On a rational and logical level she even admits to understanding what Jace did. None of that means she is obliged to forgive him on day one. It does not change that the trust is broken and Jace has to earn it back. This is literally day one, heck it’s like hour three. All of this is extremely fresh and raw. I’m glad you were able to sort out your IRL family issues by being calm and collected but you are a very rare breed. The vast majority of people do not have that kind of emotional control and a situation like this, a lie like this, will stretch most anyone’s handle on their emotions to the breaking point.

Robin

I’m not married but I have had a few dramatic family reveals relating to very emotional issues. And in each case I remained calm and communicated clearly. No one’s life was at stake but that’s much rarer in our world. It’s not in their world so I think modern audiences put too much stress on that. Additionally there idea of a marriage is much different from our own. So the betrayal is different. So yes, I think being able to react with more perspective is reasonable.

Tertius711

Sorry. I don’t have anything against you or anything, sorry if it came across that way. I like seeing all the diverse opinions for my stories, it’s great to see them and no people like it enough to be invested and comment. It’s just that when I come down to engage with the reviews I will approach it as I would any debate after a while and then I’ll bring out all the points. Sorry if if I made it feel like I was attacking you or anything. This was basically my full elaboration on my earlier replies to you since they weren’t enough to fully convey why I see it the way I do to you. Like don’t get me wrong. Yes you and the others all have a point, a very good one, but it’s one that’s rooted in your cold calculus, logic, and strategic mind as a third party observer. You don’t feel so much of the emotional complications that these characters do. For Baela however this is her real life and no amount of logic will make it easy for her to just get over what Jace did and be so understanding. That will feel very cheap to read IMO. I personally pride myself on my character writing. In order to do this I need to put myself in their shoes and sort of imagine how I’d feel because they are meant to mimic real life people and not simply serve as plot devices. (Unlike in Martin’s F&B). I personally can’t imagine being able to forgive a spouse who lied to me for over five years on something so important, regardless of how strategic or logical it may have been and be so rational and understanding on day one within a few hours of learning about it. Could you?

Robin

Well that escalated. I'll keep my opinions to myself next time.

Tertius711

How are they not valid? They were literally lied to by their husbands, people who swore sacred vows to protect and cherish them, for over FIVE YEARS. Any relationship is built on trust and Jace and Luke shattered it. It doesn't matter what reasons the Velaryons had. It doesn't matter that it was strategically and logically sound. Interpersonal relationships and marriages, love, and trust, are all based on emotions and what Jace and Luke is tantamount to betrayal of Baela and Rhaena in every sense of the word. The fact they are reacting as calmly as they are is downright miraculous and shows that deep down they know it was the logical move but that doesn't stop them from being hurt by the lack of trust shown them by people who claim to love them, which would hurt literally anyone and anyone who says they can get over that easily (and this is literally within hours of them finding out) is a liar.

Robin

Baela and Rhaena’s points are not equally valid, and it kinda feels like cheep drama to say they are. It’s entirely reasonable for them to be angry, emotions are a quick response but them not being able to go: nothing we had done and nothing we could do would prove to the Velaryon’s we wouldn’t pick our parents and siblings over them. It just feels overdone. House Velaryon might not be 100% right but in this situation I think they were. There were a lot of things they could have done better before that point, but once they got there telling two teenage girls that they’re going to start preparing for a defensive war against their family would have been stupid.

Tertius711

Yes that's the Velaryon angle but Baela and Rhaena's are equally valid. Interpersonal relationships are complicated and messy and it's a rare thing that either side is 100% in the right.

Robin

But fighting in the Basilisk Isles and keeping the glass candles a secret aren’t connected with keeping the upcoming war a secret. The first only indirectly harms her family the other could directly harm her family. The fact that she did first doesn’t mean they have a guarantee of the other.

Tertius711

Baela even acknowledges that from a logical standpoint, everything the Velaryons did was not necessarily wrong. However humans are primarily emotional beings not logical and emotionally speaking knowing that her husband believes war is inevitable with her parents and baby siblings will tear at her. But the worst part isn't even knowing that. Since the Velaryons are planning for a defensive war and don't intend to strike first, it's not that big of a deal. What hurts most is that she wasn't trusted enough by Jace to be told this long ago. She kept the secrets of the glass candles, the magic from Gogossos, she fought for Jace's sake, they endured so much in Gogossos together, fire-forged and tempered their love, and he didn't trust her to know something so gravely important about the future of their children and her relationship with her own family. It's the lack of trust more than anything that gets to Baela and Rhaena. We'll see if they get over it in time.

Robin

Late to the party, and I get why they're angry, but I feel like they should be a lot more sympathetic once they have a chance to process. If the Velaryons had told Baela and Rhaena and they'd talked, the entire Velaryon family is dead. And they were very clear that they are committed to not striking first. So it's only problematic if the Targaryens attack. Otherwise the point is moot. I really understand where the Velaryons are coming from and am a little annoyed that Baela and Rhaena aren't too.

Tertius711

Oh ok thx! Yeah extending it any further wouldn’t have worked. Much like Baela, Rhaena’s interests are too synced with the Velaryons right now to endanger her children like that.

Coconut mango

I actually thought it was fairly well written. More or less went as I predicted. Really depends on how far you want to stretch the drama...personally I had enough of the not telling the wives drama over last 5 or so chapters. I think it would be interesting if Rhaena reveals the iron islands betrayal details to her parents. But likely unlikely to happen lol

Tertius711

They will deffo regret starting it. (Assuming they live to have regrets that is :)

Tariel Khalvashi

As far as I understand, the Targaryens will start the war. Will Rhaenys and Aegon regret starting it? Because right now they clearly underestimate the strength of the Velaryons.

Revan

I'm all in...

Tertius711

Well I do have an interlude planned for Corlys Jr so stay tuned!

Revan

Yea it would definitely add humor. Our world would be completely alien to him. Figured it could be something only the grandsire and grandson could share.

Tertius711

Is it a problem with my writing? That I’ve failed to convey the reasons for their anger? I did kinda get that vibe. Please help me out here as I’m trying to improve the chapter as much as possible.

Tertius711

It would be interesting yes though I’m trying to figure out where to fit that interaction in and what they’d really talk about.

Tertius711

It is the truth yeah lol. They are planning to win a defensive war. Nah Corlys Jr won’t have dreams of Earth though it would be funny. Thanks! I hope I recover speedily too.

Tertius711

I’ve been outlining and planning and right now High Tide is still 75 chapters. The Dance will likely be a five chapter arc.

Ismail Mufti Hasibuan

I don't know I just feel like baela and rhaena anger is not justified. I dislike it for some reason

sonofr

It could be interesting to have Baela and/or Rhaena have some interaction with Corlys the Elder. They've had conversations with Viserra but it could be interesting to see them get the man who started this whole thing's perspective on the matter.

Revan

The whole defensive war argument was a stroke of genuis because it's the truth. The iron throne is scared, and they should be. It would be full circle if corlys the younger started having dragon dreams of his namesake homeworld. Great update. Hope you have a speedy recovery.

Maciek

Would that mean that it'll be more than 75 predicted chapters? Because with today it'd be 80% story complete (60/75 = 4/5), and with 9+ chapters until war......either it'll be more updates or one side will be trashed VERY quickly.

Tertius711

Glad you liked the chapter! Nah Baela won't leak it to her family. It's against the interests to protect her children after all. But she is deffo maneuvering herself into a position of knowledge and power. SI and Viserra do have some plans they haven't told Jace, as seen by the Sheepstealer idea they've been working on without telling him, but for the most part Jace knows everything. Thanks and stay tuned!

Tertius711

Glad I made you happy! Corlys Jr will definitely be taking part in the war. As for his characterization, well stay tuned because he actually has an interlude planned.

Tariel Khalvashi

This means Corlis will have a very large battle dragon. You made me happy. What character will young Corlis have and will he participate in the war? Personally, I really want him to be a mixture of Grandpa Corlis and Grandpa Damon😅

Maciek

Nice to see that you're better and writing again ;) Overally good plot update with no action but much planning. Idea to snatch some wild dragon for Corlys Junior seems plausible, but somewhat risky, and may provoke Targs to do sth similar to Cannibal - and if the succeed that'd be tragedy. And after reading previous comments I can't help but think that this action could be somehow a proverbial spark that'll ignite flames of Dance..... Daeron and Laena's plan seems solid. Hope nothing happens to them. Finally long predicted Jace-Baela confrontation. Overally it wasn't as bad as I thought, emotions were flaming, but logic was able to somewhat prevail. The only thing I fear is that Baela will squeeze all plans from "no-spine" Jace and then babble them to her family during planned meeting mentioned in previous chapter. BTW, does Jace knows everything, or SI and Viserra have some "ace in the hole", hidden from the rest of family? All in all, nice foundation for upcoming plans and confrontations. Awaiting eagerly for more ;)

Tertius711

We will be having timeskips yes but there are still at least nine chapters before we get to to the war. Thanks. I hope I feel better soon too.

Felipe Astur

Will we have a time skip of how many years for the war?? Hoje you feel better soon!

Tertius711

Thanks for the concern. I'm feeling a lot better but still feel a little off. Really dk why. Anyway the war is a lot closer than you'd think. I'm looking at the outline and honestly surprised myself with how close to it we are now.

ksri

Love all the discussion but are we getting to the war anytime soon or is it strategizing only for now? Also hope you get better soon and please, no hurry with the chapters :)
