Tertius711

As the chapter notes, the adults were putting their lives at risk to shield the children from attack. Plus sheer numbers. Some might argue they lost more than they should have with such an extreme number advantage. And yeah you summed up the feelings of all the participants pretty accurately. Stay tuned to see how it affects in the coming two chapters!

Ryder

I think the outcome was a little too good considering that the younger dragon riders should have been in more danger but aside from that I just got to say this about the chapter. Even though I wanted them to win I can’t help but feel sad that this happened at all. I remember years ago when I won a fight but I felt empty and then I think about who I fought and why it happened I just felt bitter about it. That’s what this chapter did to me now I just think how will Baela go about her life knowing she killed her brother and that Jace killed her father. How does Daeron move on from his part in Aegons death as well as the loss of his dragon. Then their is the fact the Velaryon sibling lost Luke along with their parents. This is just a lot you know.

Tertius711

Thanks! Glad you liked it! As for the list of the dead. Velaryons, three dragons and three Velaryons dead. Corlys, Viserra, and Dreamfyre Luke and Morghul Terrax, Daeron's dragon Targaryens, eight dragons and seven Targaryens dead. Meleys, Rhaenys' dragon Visenya and Vermax Viserys the Younger and Arrax Viserys the Elder and Silverwing Rhaenyra and Seasmoke Aegon and Sunfyre Jaehaerys and Tyraxes Daemon and Vermithor.

Rdgc

What a strong chapter! My hands are cold right now. Anyway I need a list of the dead 😅

ksri

I always thought that it might be possible for a powerful enough warg!

Tertius711

Good news cause I just posted the next chapter! Glad you liked this one! How would one take control of the opponent's dragon before or after the battle?

ksri

Rereading this in anticipation of the next one and it’s an amazing chapter. I do wonder if another strategy that no one tries is to take control of your opponents dragon before or after a battle!

Tertius711

The issue is that keeping the swords will guarantee a future war because the Targaryens will inevitably come back to try and get them down the line precisely for what they mean. Would there even be any value in taking Dorne with how destroyed it was by the Targaryens? Plus Tarth is in an awkward position.

NJ

I would not be ransoming back anything if I was the Velaryons. MAYBE Daemon's sword lol, but Dawn and Blackfyre especially are just too important symbolically in making it clear to all including the Targs that the Velaryons won and have both of the swords that signified the Targaryens conquest of the everything from the Wall to Dorne and that the Velaryons have defeated said family of conquerors and are now the indisputable superior dragonlords. Very true on the land holdings in Westeros part, maybe just Dorne due to it being cleared out and Tarth being an island(they do love their islands and have so many that they literally forget about Bloodstone lol) that they are already familiar with would be good extended buffer zone compromises of direct territories obtained by them

Tertius711

Yeah it's a brutal victory. Even if they ransom the swords and use them as bargaining tools in negotiations, it will be a humilation for the Targaryens. I'm uncertain if the Velaryons have any territorial ambitions in Westeros proper given the difficulties that would be involved in controlling them long term and the inevitable revanchism it would cause but we'll see. Stay tuned!

NJ

Wow they even took 3 of their 4 swords including Blackfyre?! Talk about salt in the wound and a indisputable symbol and representation of their victory, they killed most Targaryens dragons, their riders AND they took the sword of the conqueror(signifying they are now his true favored and strongest dragonlord heirs) I am very curious how you write the aftermath of this, because as much as the Velaryons probably have no interest in taking the Iron Throne outright, no matter what path they take the reality is they cannot and must not leave the Targs in possession of all the lands they rule from in their undisputed rule of the Seven Kingdoms and will have to take much more land on Westeros for themselves to rule and create a buffer/warning zone and to make the Targs lives in Westeros (if they choose not to kill the rest of them exponentially more challenging) so they are probably going to have to take parts of the Crownlands (more so than their traditional holdings) parts of the Stormlands, Reach(taking Oldtown to crush the non Zalidaros sect of the Seven, the Redwyne isles as outposts), get rid of the Mooton-Arryns in the Vale and Maidenpool to put their allies in the Arryn-Royces in charge in the Vale and maybe the Celtigars in Maidenpool, hell taking Casterly Rock, Lannisport as well (which I suppose means the Westerlands lol) from the Lannisters, and of course to complete their bufferzone choke hold strategy in the aftermath of this battle forget just taking the Stepstones ALL of Dorne which the Targs have so graciously done most of the heavy get rid of the pesky and annoying Dornish noblity heavy lifting is now there completely undefended and for the taking as well to make sure as just happened no Targs can get any "The Velaryon state is just a short ride aways) ideas.

Tertius711

Glad the climax exceeded all your expectations!! Yes. Shame about Luke but sacrifices had to be made 😤 Rhaen’s whole state of mind right now must be wild af lol. Yeah the Targaryens got decimated. It would indeed be an ideal time to negotiate but let’s see if the Velaryons go for that or try and continue the war. Same for the Targaryens, which will win out in their minds, revenge or fear?

Tertius711

No Dornish rebellion. It’s been 12 years and they’ve broken all the rebels already. Jaehaerys’ sword Dawn, Daemon’s sword Dragon’s Wroth, and Aegon’s sword Blackfyre all fell to Bloodstone and were recovered by the Velaryons.

Omar

You know, I just realized since Daemon and his son are died and the Targaryens are too busy fighting the Velaryons. Would Dorne rise in rebellion. And what happened to jaehaerys’s sword Dawn? Did the Velaryons claim it after the battle?

Maciek

So here it is; a climax, led to by few dozen earlier updates. I have to admit it exceeded all my expectations :) Pity about Luke, but I guess some casualties couldn't be avoided. Plus he was eventually avenged. It'd be interesting to see Rhaena's state - after all, her father killed her husband, and in turn was killed by brother-in-law. Quite messy. Overally, Targaryen riders were decimated. Now it'd be an ideal moment to negotiate - but I think that at least for now Velaryons will try to finish the job. And at least one Targaryen will try to get some revenge no matter of cost.

Tertius711

They might honestly but it’s easier said than done and lower on the list of priorities.

Tariel Khalvashi

Please tell me that the Velaryons will give the order to kill Laris Strong.

Tertius711

Yes, the way Luke died is the pinnacle of his character. Lucerys the Loyal truly. Glad you liked the way I had Daeron/Laena pay their own price as well! Stay tuned for next chapter where both sides discuss the merits of continuing the war! Great analyses on the dragon numbers and sizes. And yeah, Rhaenys' depression last chapter makes complete sense now doesn't it? She truly lost everything.

Tertius711

Very crazy indeed. It's a crushing and decisive victory on the part of House Velaryon. Yes you've analyzed the risk assessment for going after more Targaryens with dragons well. There's no more Faceless Men and with the Conches exposed they can't easily assassinate Targs anymore. Smuggling wildfire into the Red Keep is impossible I'mma be real. Larys Strong's spies use those tunnels as well. We are to believe the Conches can know them better than the local spymaster and hide wildfire from them? It's not feasible. Let's see how the Targaryen survivors proceed from here.

NJ

RIP Luke!! Oh wow one day 8 dragon kills is crazy! They pretty much got Mike Tyson'ed (first round KO) NO way are they going to have any interest whatsoever in anymore dragon duels with the Velaryons now. Honestly even though they could do it killing the remaining Targs on their dragons is probably too high a (some of them would ptobably have to die to take out Vhaghar and or Cannibal) price to pay for Velaryons, but now that the gloves are off and the Conches who are probably rightfully enraged at finally getting outed in a sense, operation assassinate the Targs(Aemond, the one with Cannibal whose name escapes me, Helaena and Gael in that order are who I am trying to go Faceless Man on if I am the Velaryons if they decidde not to go final solution on the remaing Targs in a dragon attack on King's Landing) hellI I am surprised SI Corlys didnt have the Conches go full blown Aerys and smuggle in caches of wild fire to blow King's Landing to hell or at least the Red Keep and Dragon Pit with his meta knowledge if their surgical strike option A was thwarted. Also there is no way this war will not lead to massive fissures in House Targaryen, Gael, Helaena, and Aemond especially must be wondering what in the hell Rhaenys was thinking not wanting to make peace on whatever "humiliating"(you continue being one of the 2 most unquestioned powerful families in the world with your whole family alive and well) terms it took now

Tertius711

Yes it's very much a tragedy. A brutal brutal tragedy.

Jack K

I also totally get why Rhaenys was completely mortified after waking up in the last chapter now. She lost her entire immediate family in one day (husband and both children) that screws you up. Targs eldest male left is Aemond as the only people older than him are Gale, Helena and Rhaenys herself.

Tertius711

Ofc that is much easier said than done Tariel. Let's see how it goes.

Tertius711

Seems the most likely outcome doesn't it Tom Tat?

Tertius711

Glad it's your favorite chapter! And F in the chat for Luke :( The Velaryons taking down Vhagar, Cannibal, and Syrax remains to be seen however given the enormous price it would take to achieve it. Stay tuned. Moot point ain't it given Daemon and his son are dead lol. Also doesn't look like Jaehaerys was hesitating if he was pouncing on Baela's son.

Jack K

As much as it pains me to say it, Lucerys’ death was the epitome of his character and I’m glad it was him who sacrificed himself for Jace. There was no way the Velaryons could take the bronze fury down without sacrifice and I loved the way you had Dareon/Laena pay a price for Aegon as well. There’s definitely going to be more of that before this war is over. I’m definitely interested in how they will discuss finishing what they started with the dance. As of now I believe you killed 7 of the 13 “adult” dragon riding dragons for House Targaryen (8 if we are including Meleys eventual demise) with another badly injured. In the Velaryon side they’ve lost 3 and I’ll expect you might state later if there were any critical injuries so I’ll say 1 critical injury of Syrax level for Velaryons. That brings Balance of Power to 5 to 10 dragons on Targaryen and Velaryon sides respectively (with one maimed dragon included in each side for now) However the Targs still have Vhagar and Cannibal while the Velaryons lost their biggest in Dreamfyre and there’s a considerable drop off in size. If the Velaryons are going to eradicate the Targs dragons like some are pushing for, they are going to lose probably more of their own dragons in doing so. (I’ll say 3-6 for now). Will be interesting to see for sure.

Tertius711

Stay tuned to see if we get that Rhaenys POV and introspection!

Tertius711

But the price to achieve that would be high indeed. Let's see if they're willing to pay it.

Tertius711

Tariel Khalvashi, that's the cold calculated cruel logical way. That being said the Velaryons are greatly mentally taxed by what they have done this chapter and would they be willing to pay the price to continue the war to its brutal end? That we shall see in the coming chapters!

Tertius711

NJ, Luke is deader than dead. Not even Valyrian steel armor can protect you against that heat, especially since the fire can still go through your breathing holes and melt the glass visor and you know just generally transfer through the heat of the air since the armor isn't airtight. And yeah the Targaryens are in such a bad situation it's comical. 8 dragons dead and riders dead with them or crippled along with some further injuries in ONE DAY is horrible. It's not two days mind you, it's one. All of these deaths happened in the span of like thirteen hours. The 'second day' is mostly cause of the previous day and all the stuff that happened on it but that's like the setup lol. You raise great points for what shall come next. Let's see how it goes and if the Velaryons have the strength of will and clarity of mind to continue the war until Targaryene extermination or will they use their advantage to press for peace and on what terms will their peace be?

Tertius711

Yeah pretty much lol. The one day war. Stay tuned to see how the peace unfolds from here in the coming two chapters! The Firestorm and The Curtain Calls!

Tertius711

I'm glad it was heavy. I wanted it to be as heavy as I could possibly make it. This is some dark and tragic brutal stuff. So did who ended up dying surprise you?

Tertius711

Noted. I've made some edits putting in some dialogue and dragon commands. Would like to hear your thoughts.

Tariel Khalvashi

From the very beginning and until now I am for the Velaryons. But if you think about it, this fic reveals a tragedy about a family in which, due to the pride of Jaehaerys, and then Rhaenys, the sister is forced to fight against her brother and father. Baela was forced to kill the girl she once considered her sister, and then her brother. It is very sad. How I would like to calculate the scene, even if it is a dragon's dream, as Jaehaerys sees how his actions turned out for his family.

sonicmalibu

Needs more dialogue imo

Tariel Khalvashi

While the Targaryens have two of the largest dragons, they pose a danger. The Velaryons must get rid of these two.

Tom Tat

Well, war is over. Targaryen lost.

Omar

Damn man, that is probably my most favorite chapter yet. though don’t get me wrong. I feel very much dead inside seeing Luke and his dragon died. Now if the Velaryons take down Vhagar, the Cannibal, and Syrax. Then the Targaryen dragon size superiority will be forever over. Hell, in a few decades I’m sure the Velaryons dragons will be larger on average than the Targaryens. Though I am curious if Daemon and his son would hesitate in killing there, daughters/sisters as well as their children.

Tariel Khalvashi

I hope the Velaryons will go to the end and at least deprive the Targaryens of their dragons.

Tariel Khalvashi

Rhaenys herself forced the Velaryons to go to war. At first, Jaehaerys, with his delusions of grandeur, fooled her into thinking. The Targaryens could have resolved everything peacefully, but their pride did not allow them to admit their own mistakes. I hope we have a scene where Rhaenys realizes everything and regrets her choice, and also curses Jaehaerys, who started it all.

NJ

Logically you may be right, the question is though Is Jace prepared to order to do that at this juncture and are the rest of his family such as his wife who just had to kill her brother and cousin and who just saw her father get murdered by him in state to go through with it etc? He is definitely sociopathic in most circumstances, but the 3 people in his life in his parents and twin brother who were literally his frame of reference for his entire life have been killed.

Tariel Khalvashi

The Velaryons must not stop. They must destroy as many Targaryens and their dragons as possible. If they give them a chance to rebuild it could result in another war in the future. All Targaryen dragons must die so that in the future these proud people will not even think of attacking the Velaryons.

NJ

You didn’t officially confirm it and did leave an opening, so while next chapter could have me looking dumb and the Valryian armor could have come in the clutch I am gonna for now say RIP Luke, you were a real solid one. As for the Targaryens they are SCREWED. 8 dragons and their riders dead/crippled in the first 2 days is DISASTROUS, particularly being that all of their adult riding members are dead and or disabled with the exception of Gael whose dragon is maimed and Halaena and I guess young Aemond(who for me would be on my priority number one list for assassination now if I was the Velaryons). The rest of their riders are children and even though you had Cannibal be tamed by one I highly doubt he is one easy to control and or has any interest in taking place in a dragon duel if he is as smart and weary of engaging many dragons as he was in canon. The Dance is for all and intents and purposes over and a Velaryon "victory" (doubt it feels much like one with Corlys, Viserra and Luke(?) and Daeron's dragon), the question now is how far do they want to go with it now in their victory, because they could probably take out the the rest of the Targaryens now, but they probably lose 1-3 more riders/dragons in the process in order to do so. I for one would take the W and take advantage of the remaining Targs being in utter shock and despair at getting killed in such large numbers and getting their ass kicked so throughly and press for peace, aka "we kill the rest of you or you give us basically all the young Targaryen females as brides (hostages) and their dragons and all your eggs, you recognize us as sovereign emperors of our lands which now include the Stepstones and Summer Islands).

Tushar Srivastav

The war is effectively over?

Felipe Astur

Fuck….. The scene of sister versus brother was heavy... Honestly, I imagined that one of the twins or Laena would die.... My money was in Rhaena.... I was wrong LoL
