Tertius711

An interesting idea. Stay tuned! Chapter coming soon!

Maciek

I'll shoot and say that 2nd half will contain POWs of some side-players ;)

Tertius711

I’ve written the first half of 74 which contains all these negotiations so stay tuned to see it!

Kolek

I agree with you, though to play devil's advocate, Dawn barely qualifies as a Targaryen family heirloom, given that they got it only 12 years ago. Still, I can see why might not want to push it. It really depends on the overall tone of the negotiation and all the other concessions that are going to be demanded.

Tertius711

Well killing members and dragons is a wound that time would heal. Keeping their heirlooms isn't on the other hand.

DoggY

I understand giving up Blackfyre as it’s a symbol of Targaryen Kingship and even the other Valyrian steel as it’s symbolic value probably means more to the descendents of old Valyria. But dawn is a dornish sword and was taken through conquest by the Targs so why couldn’t the Velaryons claim it through conquest as well? I don’t really think swords would be the main cause of resentment wars in the future. It’s more for killing 7 members of House Targaryen and 8 dragons. Also I’m biased because Dawn is my fav sword in the books lol.

Tertius711

Would it be worth keeping swords they don't need given the anger and resentment and potential future wars?

DoggY

Hopefully the Velaryons will be able to keep the swords they captured from the Targs and not lose them in the peace treaty or the very least keep Dawn they have valaryian steel a plenty but Dawn is something unique in the known world

Tertius711

Maybe about 5 at the most?

Omar

Sorry, I meant how many unridden dragon do the Velaryons possess right now

Tertius711

Vaegon's dead IMO. Wdym by Pacific number? What's Pacific number?

Tertius711

Dreamfyre is an egg factory lol.

Omar Alshaikh

I know that Vaegon is very much irrelevant to the story, but I do wonder how he views the rivalry between the Targaryens and Velaryons as well as the outcome of this war. That is of course, if he is still alive. Also, curious what is the Pacific number of dragons in the Myrish dragonpit?

DoggY

Crazy how much one dragon can turn the tides of power. Unfortunately for the Targs Dreamfyre happened to be the most fertile dragon ever. Like seriously how many dragons did she sire in this timeline lol? Reminds me of that poor Goodbrother lady in ASOIAF that had 12 daughters and 3 sons lol

Tertius711

Yeah you have a great point. They'd probably need to claim something like Vhagar to even stand a chance of surviving.

DoggY

Can’t see the Mooton’s and Arryns ever getting dragons now in this timeline. Even if they managed to sneak in and bond with a dragon like they almost did before Daemon stopped them I think the Targaryens would just wipe out their houses kin or not. Not after this humiliation it only took 3 generations since the Velaryons became dragonriders to not only outnumber them but beat them so decisively.

Tertius711

Indeed. And while there is a strong argument to remove their dragons, to do so would have required giving up loads of the Velaryon family so not worth it. Like the Targaryens realistically cannot come back for a round 2 for many, many years, if they ever do.

Tertius711

Depends when he learned of the future. It would change depending at what juncture of his life he got the future knowledge

Amerdism

It’s a likely possibility, though various targ kings did help to unify Westeros into one overall realm, it still remains in separate kingdoms with very separate identities, they only followed the targs because they had dragons as seen by the quick fall of the house when their dragons died out. Which is an argument against taking their dragons, because if that happens then it’s little different than deposing them just over a longer period. At the end of the day, when nations lose wars there’s generally some unrest, losing a major war so quickly and easily will cause a great amount of unrest, not least of which is caused by their vassals already acting out. So generally, while house Targaryen may survive the war it will likely never eclipse house velaryon again without a dedicated build up which will easily be noticed and countered.

Tariel Khalvashi

As the author, what do you think if Jaehaerys knew what his actions would lead to, what would he try to change?

Tertius711

Honestly Chapter 71 was the chapter I was most excited to write the entire story.

Maciek

Yeah, it was ;)

Tertius711

Wasn't it epic though?

Maciek

Yes, we did. The thing is that I've not expected such duel as opening salvo of the Dance ;)

Tertius711

I mean didn't we basically get the canon Daemon-Aemond duel between Rhaenys and Viserra lol? Arguably even more epic given it was a 1v5 instead of a 1v1? Nah, Baela and Rhaena have to live. I need to torture them with guilt muahahaha Huh. Nice. Lol. We shall see indeed!

Maciek

Two pissible thoughts would be much more dramatic Daemon-Jacaery's families battle, with Aemond, but also Baela or Rhaena death. Plus sth like Dameon-Aemond duel, but with Rhaenys and Viserra. And those were only two of many possible variations ;) Polish He didn't drink rum, though :) Yeah, we'll see. Especially whether new generations learned form past mistakes and didn't poison their children with past grudges.

Tertius711

Oh? What were the KIA you imagined? What's your first language? Tbf I don't blame you. Corlys acted a lot like Jack Sparrow and the story opened with a high stakes duel against a pirate lol. Well let's see about the Targaryens. Ah the Epilogue. Grand plans indeed for it!

Maciek

Overally, whole arc went quite nicely. Maybe I've imagined a few more KIA on both sides, and Targaryens losing their biggest dragons, but those are details :) Sorry about "pigeons" - damn language differences ;) Well, to be honest when I started reading this fic, I expected some similar PoTC vibes. Maybe not undead, but Kraken or two? Who knows...... About preventing Mooton-Arryn's rise - I think that Targaryens will have enough problems with reconstruction and maintaining stability to worry about them, at least for few years. I'll stay tuned, don't worry ;) Though to get standing ovation, we'll have to wait until Epilogue, I think :)

Tertius711

Glad it was able to still be eventful. I remember you being quite concerned before the Dance. Are you pleased with how the arc has progressed? Yeah a heck ton of damage indeed. It's called the Firestorm for a reason after all. Dragonstone was too far north for the Velaryons to target without overstretching and exposing themselves to the Targaryens in King's Landing. Racallio Ryndoon commanded the navy in the assault on the Stepstones. Ned Bean and a bunch of other admirals likely oversaw the assault on the Summer Isles. Oh yeah Baela and Rhaena are all fucked up. Jace is too mature and too guilt-ridden to retaliate tbch. I'm glad the Velaryon war council was entertaining! Yeah Jace is in the other shoe now lol. He's come full circle. Though the term is 'doves' not pigeons. Tarth isn't strictly necessary and is too close to Westeros tbch. It's also more traditionally de jure in Westeros proper so more likely to spark revanchism and irredentism. I mean Jaehaerys is ancient history to both of them and he died trying to make peace with the Targaryens so they don't really consider that. Would also be pretty immature for them to shunt blame on Jaehaery when they're supposed to finally be self-aware and take responsibility for their own actions. Oh yeah. I didn't directly take inspiration from that but I can deffo see the comparison. Man I should rewatch Pirates of the Caribbean. Were the Mooton-Arryns that big of a winner hmm? Perhaps the Targaryens have a plan to prevent them growing too powerful? Yeah Western alliance is like shiiiittt Stay tuned! The war ends in the next chapter! We started with 'At Rise' and we shall close with 'The Curtain Calls' as all good dance and theater must.

Tertius711

Very great points indeed Amerdism. Very great points. I wouldn't be surprised if this crushing defeat combined with resentment of Targaryen tyranny and overreach has basically undone all the work Maegor and Jaehaerys did cementing Westeros under Targaryen rule. A new round of rebellions and uprisings in Westeros for Aemond to deal with is certainly not out of the cards.

Tertius711

You raise great points indeed Omar Alshaikh.

Tertius711

Mrsean22. Jace even acknowledged that himself lol. He acknowledges that he is at least in part being selfish and purposefully kicking the can down the road for the next generation to deal with. He's had enough of loss in his own life. Tbf to Jace though, it is pretty unlikely the Targaryens would catch up at this point. They are nine against the Velaryons' twenty ridden dragons and an unspecified number of spare unridden dragons in the Myrish Dragonpit.

Tertius711

Indeed Bl00dSpartan. The Tarths aren't Velaryon allies anymore.

Maciek

Quite eventful chapter, even without action :) Month into the war, and 1/3 of Westero’s Eastern Coast has been ruined. It’ll take a lot of time and money for Targaryens to restore it. BTW, was Dragonstone attacked too? And who commanded naval landings on Stepstones and Summer Isles? Baela and Rhaena’s mindscapes are understandable. Though I wonder why Jace didn’t snap and try to retaliate accusations. Velaryon’s war council was intensive and entertaining. Now Jacaerys knows what his parents felt after his fight with Daemon years earlier. This was exact repeat of such situation, with younger generation – “hawks” – opting for war until decisive victory, and elders – “pigeons” – wanting peace. Their demands are reasonable, though I’d also demand a Tarth island, for further security of northern flank. Targ’s POW is also interesting, especially with serious divide in their family. Gael and Haelena’s attitudes were expectable, but Aemond? Let’s hope he won’t make any blunders in nearest future….. Rhaenys and Gael’s exchange of accusations while short was nice. But the one thing I can’t understand is why both of them are still unable to mention that everything started with Jaehaerys Elder. Was it a feeling of responsibility for their own actions, or simple shame that they were simple grandpa’s girls, who couldn’t think for themselves? Damn, after last sentence I’ve felt a strong vibes of “Parlay” scene from "Pirates of the Carribean: At World’s End" :). Such scenery and music would be ideal for meeting of two hostile Houses of Dragon Riders…. At the end, two statements. First, the biggest winners in terms of costs and gains was Mooton-Arryn faction – after all, they were able to crush their biggest noble opponents and cement their dominance over region without bigger losses. Secondly, Western Alliance nobles won’t be happy. Targaryens were beaten, but not broken, and in few years Rhaenys may want to make up for such prestige losses in ways, that’d be quite detrimential for them. Their western expedition better succed, for their own good ;) Now awaiting for negotiations ;) War is nearly over......

Tertius711

Kolek yes they did. They haven't been allies since the aftermath of Gogossos. Targaryens cracked down hard on them after that and the Triunification.

Tertius711

Yeah but it would be pretty immersion breaking IMO. Maybe as an omake but not as canon.

Amerdism

You underestimate how much issues the targs will have to deal with, they have to a war for the first time and now the realms will fee their oats and act out, in other words, Westeros will not be fighting much in the future given the targs will need to reaffirm control and destabilise the realm. Additionally, it’s entirely possible they’ll try to stay out of the velaryons way, they lost and need to lick their wounds and if they give up their non-Westeros possessions they have little actual reason beyond a grudge to pick a fight with the velaryons since they will no longer be vassals or directly contesting their power in Westeros by holding some of the lands there. Essentially, they’d be picking a fight with someone who they lost against, will likely still be more powerful than them and they have no good reason to do so, it’ll cause unrest in Westeros if they go picking fights for no good reason. Also since both houses have interests in opposite directions that also helps.

Tariel Khalvashi

This is true. But in fic, everything depends on the author’s imagination.

Omar

Yeah, but after a generation or two, Vhagar will eventually die of old age. And honestly cannibal might just go back to his old wild self, after his rider is dead.

Bl00dSpartan

It seems like it. The Celtigars, Royces, and Graftons were all mention as received word as allies, but nothing was spoken of the Tarth's.

Mrsean22

Well pretty interesting chapter. Though curious how true Jace words were about the Targaryens not able to get close to Velaryons numbers in dragons? Maybe not short term but who knows how life goes sometimes? Doesn't hurt the Targaryens still have the largest dragons in Vhagar and Cannibal.

Kolek

Did the Tarths and the Eastermonts side against Velaryon? I see their castles got burned even though they used to be allies.

Tertius711

Dragon dreams don’t let you meet dead people though?

Tariel Khalvashi

I meant any living Targaryen who, thanks to the dragon dreams, will meet Jaehaerys, or any other option. Jaehaerys is just such a hateful character that you want to see him regret when he already knows what his actions led to. After all, he was the one who started all this hostility.

Tertius711

Oh yeah Gael facing her own hypocrisy at last was great. Quite ironic to see the new dynamic in House Velaryon. An interesting take on the future dynamic of both houses.

Jack K

My thoughts on the Chapter: -I did not see Gale/Helena going behind Aemond/Rhaenys back like that but it’s very well done now that I took a moment to think about it, also good on Rhaenys for calling out Gale on being a hypocrite, no truer words have been said. Honestly Gale I think is more at fault than Daemon -I like the Deja vu of seeing the now older generation of house Velaryon leaning towards peace but the younger advocating for war, but totally not surprising, good parallel -From a third party perspective (after seeing both sides) my honest opinion is this conflict is leaning towards the French/British rivalry of the age of imperialism. Both sides will never be able to let bygones be bygones and will likely clash multiple time on a lower scale in the future. OR if the Targs push it… -the conflict will go the way of Carthage and Rome during the Punic wars; with the Targaryens ending up in the position of Carthage should they keep coming back to avenge their losses

Tertius711

Karma's a bitch. Glad you like it!

Jack K

“The Wendwater would protect the Kingswood itself, but little could protect the lands of House Bar Emmon, House Sunglass, and the other treacherous and petty vassals in the region from the inferno steadily progressing towards them. A divine retribution for their disloyalty Baela had heard some more fanatic servants of House Velaryon call it” Damn, you turned not only the manpower but the very lands themselves to ash for the Hook Vassals. Talk about reap what you sow… I like it

Tertius711

An interesting parallel though not quite. Still it gives food for thought.

Tertius711

Tbf whether the Velaryons intended it or not, Storm's End was always going to be humiliating and while the Velaryons might not have done it solely to humiliate them, we can't say for certain it wasn't part of their calculation.

Kolek

I just realized who Corlis the Second reminds me of and it has to be peak irony. A brilliant and proud young man, wise beyond his years, raised in a traumatic era, at war with his close kin... The dude is a young Jaehaerys Targaryen come again, lmao!

Tushar Srivastav

Then he needs more sense drilled into him, it will be difficult but important if these two families need to grow

Tertius711

Wdym by dragon dream for Jaehaerys? Isn’t he dead? Glad I was able to convince you given how passionate you were about continuing the war in the previous chapters! :)

Tariel Khalvashi

I really wish there was a scene with the dragon dream where Jaehaerys regrets his decisions and realizes what it has led to for his family. Excellent chapter and explanations of why both sides do not want to continue the war.

Tertius711

Thanks!

ksri

Amazing chapter again!

Tertius711

Thanks! Glad it was good! Stay tuned! The magic may or may not work. Winterfell has burned down in the past and still remains magical. Honestly though the amount of damage might have removed the magic. Jaehaerys is probably rolling in his grave now lol. Very ironic indeed. Let's see if Targaryen centralization can still proceed!

Tertius711

Oh it wasn't quite intentionally done that way. Storm's End makes a great halfway point between Tyrosh and King's Landing. It's Aemond who sees it as a humiliation.

Tushar Srivastav

I do not think Velaryon should humiliate the Targy, having to negotiate with Velaryon whom they have always considered below them would be humiliating enough because if they have chosen this path of peace, more humiliation they face will only grow resentment. If they are looking for long peace. this should end in a somewhat face-saver for tragya in front of their people.

Omar

Excellent chapter once again. You have really outdone yourself my man. I really can’t wait for the next one. I’m just curious to know if the magic on the walls of storms end still work, even in its ruined state. And I’m very curious how Jaehaerys would react if he knew how his actions brought the near total collapse of his house. All because he wasn’t willing to give the Stepstones away. But it’s kind of funny that jaehaerys actions ended up having a worse effect for his house than his father ever did. Also wondering if Rhaenys plans for a more Targaryen controlled Westeros will still go through. Even though they lost the war.

Tertius711

I'm glad you found those discussions good! It means I succeeded in my task! It should hopefully stop Blackfyres. Let's see how it goes!

Lictor Magnus

Those were two very good discussions. I’m glad it’s not going to end in a total party wipe for the targs. This will also hopefully stop something like the blakfyres from happening since they’ll be too scared to weaken themselves in the face of their eastern cousins.

Tertius711

Thanks! Stay tuned! Just two more chapters left and then onto Aegon!

SteveH

Amazing. Excellent darling can’t wait to see how you wrap it up. Looking forward to your Aegon one
