Depends. They definitely can spy on them but it would be like looking for a needle in a haystack without knowing the exact times and locations of the meeting and so forth and with only three busy people capable of using the glass candles atm. We shall see how the coalition turns out though!

Zenokya

I have the feeling that the Targaryen are using the glass candles and all those secrets meeting are not so secret. I mean yeah coalition is a good plan on paper but it might just result in a bigger field of fire. Westerosis army are not like the army of Dorne, they like to stay in a place in formation.

Aegon has already approximated the idea of the dragons closing their eyes when he had Balerion attack Casterly Rock but this isn't always feasible ofc given how they need to see where they are going. And yeah there's a reason Aegon has always been insistent about his sisters and him wearing full plate armor whenever they ride into combat. Still they and the dragons' eyes are protected by being a small target to begin with. I don't think it's possible to teach the dragons to flap their wings more silently simply because of their sheer size. Smaug describes his wings like a hurricane for a reason anyway. The Shock, Awe, and Fear factor of the dragons' wings can't be underestimated either and besides they still fly so fast that hearing the wings doesn't really give any forward advance warning. Thanks for the reply no matter how late! Stay tuned for Ch14!

Rival

I know the reply to this thread is a bit late, but I think they could reduce the risk of scorpions and lucky longbow shots by having the dragons close their eyes or make an approximation of a squint, as well as the rider lying forward/down as much as possible to use the dragon's scales as protection and pose a smaller target. Also, if they can teach their Dragons to flap their wings more silently, similar to how an Owl barely makes any noise in comparison to say a Dove, they could get closer to a target before they take action. i thought the whole point of Aegon SI is to do the conquest smarter and more comprehensively than before? To me that means no mercy and root and steam warfare in the Vale, Stormlands, Reach and probably even Dorne. The Starks will fall too, just they would be last of kingly houses to fall here (and he has already pretended to make nice with a kingly house before in your story with Lannisters in the short term when he was weakening them in the long term for when he finally got rid of them) this would be a bit like that too here when he "spares" the Starks and then it would be much more surgical and precise as well here too when gets rid of the Starks here too

Tertius711

Why should the Starks be spared when none of the others are? And exactly the point they’re not critical to anything to rule the North just like the Gardeners weren’t for the Reach.

NJ

The Reach is a fertile and warm weather region, the Gardeners werent needed for anything and the Tyrells upjumped stewards that they were more or less managed the region just fine after and Aegon in the OTL could have easily subsumed the region and projected power there without the Gardeners and then the Tyrells. The far bigger problem and mistake was actually leaving the Hightowers and the Faith and Citadel in one piece as you are so aptly noting in this SI. With north You take the Moat and establish royal towns, garrison and naval facilities along both coasts and start encroaching your way in with all of these plans more and more inland and the Starks here once you are done with the rest of Westeros are ripe for eliminating (if that is the path you want to take), but to me its not as pertinent as getting rid of the gardeners, arryns, lannisters, durrandons from the outset of conquering their kingdoms would/will be

Tertius711

The fact they are a stabilising force is precisely why they must go. That is competing royal prestige and influence that must be removed for the unity of the empire. Why undermine them when they have the chance to just remove them outright and not have to deal with the hassle? The Starks are not needed to stabilise anything just like the Gardeners were not in the Reach.

Tertius711

Though tbch unless they want to be precise in their targeting they don’t quite need the night vision lel. The North is far less populated and actually smaller than the south though. (The other kingdoms combined are twice the North per canon. Despite the misconception the North is half, it is only a third of the land controlled by the Iron Throne). Maegor for example took about six years to deal with the Faith and he was in a worse off position. So it depends how it goes. Though tbch if it takes a whole generation (and by that I mean 25 years) to conquer and consolidate the whole empire I wouldn’t be surprised. And yeah don’t forget dragons. Winterfell burned down three times and the Starks that were there all killed in the past and the Others and Wall did nothing. There’s no magic to the saying it’s just a family tradition and perhaps has some importance to the Stark rule in some way but not to humanity overall. There is some overlap yes. I imagine that Bloodraven for example would make a fearsome dragonrider but it’s too much hassle to go out of your way to try and create a Bloodraven, especially given the blood dilution required.

NJ

Beucause to me they are both the most useful to keep around in some form as a stabilizing force in the North of the kings Aegon will have to get rid of and the easiest to undermine, just like in your Corlys SI when you noted they were in danger of becoming a paper tiger with all of the coastal houses and regions becoming stronger thanks to development from the western bloc and the Velaryons in the east, your Targs here as the soon to be imperial ruling house can do both of those things in a much more comprehensive manner and also seed the sparse coastal regions in the North with their own loyalists populace from the Riverlands at that too

Xisaro

Yeah, night vision would pretty much just be to stealth up for that first devastating strike. The 'leave them alone for a generation thing' was mostly just to consolidate all of the South and recover before dealing with an equally large land mass. I feel like dealing with the Faith and de-radicalizing the population is going to be a lot like fighting cancer. Also, I'm probably influenced by CK3 time frames without accounting for dragons. Didn't know the Starks were drive out before. Don't really care about keeping them around other than that fan speculated potential connection to the wall. It will probably be fine. I'm just picturing in my head him killing the last Stark and suddenly the wall comes down and he's like. "Fuck." (Edit: just depends if Brandon the Builder was enough of a dick to tie his bloodline to the wall that kept humanity alive ) Yeah, the warg thing is probably too much of a hassle. Seems like they have a lot of overlap though; bonding with animals/dragons and greenseer/dragon dreams. If he wanted to try later he could probably just find one beyond the wall.

Tertius711

Fanon is not reliable lol and I’m not gonna follow them just to save House Stark. Nor do I plan to involve the Others and the Long Night in this story due to how messy that whole plotline is.

Tertius711

Fair enough. Scheming isn’t for everyone. Still glad you’re able to understand it’s necessary for the setup so all the fun stuff can happen. Armies and scorpions are pretty useless indeed beyond being annoying. Stay tuned indeed however to see how it goes with assassins and magic! Scorpions will have an even worse time aiming in the darkness but a night vision spell could be smth to look into. Though that being said once the dragon breathes some fire no more night vision is needed XD. Why wouldn’t they be able to do anything beyond vassalize the North for a generation? No evidence. The Starks have been driven out of Winterfell many times and the world hasn’t ended. Skinchanger magic is unreliable. It’s not always inherited by the children. Hardly worth diluting the dragonblood for.

Xisaro

Mentioned in my long rambling comment. TLDR; canon(?)fanon always a Stark in Winterfell maybe reinforces the magic in the Wall? You could use it as a plot device to kick off the final boss battle in Aegon's generation.

Tertius711

Why would the Starks be shown such mercy?

NJ

Personally I would offer the Starks a you can keep Winterfell and you can be a major warden deal If I am Aegon then slowly but surely start undermining them with ward system, taking Moat Cailin as royal garrision, setting up a royal fleet and administrative branch in the White Harbor ( basically tossing the Manderlys overboard and making them guest in their own city), doing the same with setting up naval bases and town along the west coast of the North. In essence developing the North but making it clear an evident to the common folk and even non Stark nobles that is that the opportunities are becoming plentiful and life it improving due to the royal(national) government. As for the other 3 in the Vale and especially the now combined Durrandons and Gardeners, no mercy and or quarter can and should be shown this coming Holy War they are going to declare on the Targs

Xisaro

Lots of scheming. Not especially interested but understand it's necessary to setup the board. I prefer empire building and family time personaly. Fighting, training and magic is all cool too. Yeah, armies in the field are pretty much useless against dragons. I don't think they can really keep a balista loaded and ready while they march and it probably only takes one dragon fire run to cripple an army. Basically, if anything is going to trip them up it's probably going to be assassins and/or magic. I would think the faceless men would know they would have to kill the whole family because it only takes one with a dragon and a grudge to burn bravos. Should figure out a dark vision spell for night raids to avoid the balistas. I would try to just vassalize the north and focused down the church of the seven. Probably not going to be able to do anything else with the North for a generation at least. Also, might be fanon but I think it has been implied that a Stark has to be in Winterfell to maintain the magic of the wall, so he can't really kill the off. Maybe try to get some skinchanger magic into the bloodline? Have to make sure it doesn't overtake/overwrite the dragon magic blood. Maybe see how a cadet branch goes before doing a full blend? They already basically have a eugenics program setup.

Tertius711

Essos does not care about Westeros' affairs atm no, not with the Century of Blood still raging in full force there. All according to Aegon's keikaku and one of the key reasons why he didn't interfere like OTL.

AmusinglyAimless

The one thing that didn't feel mentioned was how the Essosi were reacting. But it sounds like they have their hands too full to care atm.

Tertius711

Nice. Glad to see your thoughts. Stay tuned for the coming arc! The Holy War beckons!

AmusinglyAimless

It's good. It's basically an interlude chapter both bookending the last arc and setting up the next one. It also does a good job of giving us a wider view of the story and building anticipation for the next arc. So all good overall.

Tertius711

You're welcome! Glad to continue it! Wdyt of the chapter and its events?

AmusinglyAimless

Thanks for the update. Glad to see this continued. Heh if I'm the Targaryens then I bottle up the North and Vale essentially putting both under 'Siege', and focus on the Reach and the Stormlands. Then after dealing with the Reach and the Stormlands, you bottle up the Dornish. Then deal with your three bottle-upped factions as necessary.
