A Christmas Carol audiobook for you, Staves 1 & 2
🕑 Added 2023-12-03 03:25:48 +0000 UTCThe holidays are a weird, fun, horrifying, heartwarming, exciting, exhausting, beautiful, miserable time. So we thought we'd make an audiobook for you. Here, I'm reading the first two staves--up through the journey to Christmas past--of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol for you (beautifully edited by Miranda Zickler and produced by Carolyn Kendrick). Expect the next ghosts in a couple of weeks. (This section is your November bonus, albeit a couple of days late--Santa hit some fog.)
I grew up watching the George C. Scott-as-Scrooge version of this story, which my parents taped off KOIN on Christmas Eve, 1989 (which means my Christmas memories also involved watching, year after year, news of the ouster of Ceaușescu and Noriega. Which, now that I think of it, seems pretty fitting). So what I'm saying is, if you want to make me cry out of pure nostalgia in about ten seconds, play this TJ Maxx ad for me. (No, it's never, ever the same place twice.)
I hope you enjoy this special project--I've been wanting to make a public domain audiobook for you for a while, so please let me know if you have more book ideas for 2024. And no matter what your month and your holiday season and your New Year's are like, thank you for being there with us through all of 2023. We couldn't have done it without you. I couldn't have done it without you. You're everything. We're just Ken.
Love,
Sarah

My three year old is currently obsessed with A Christmas Carol, I remembered today that you recorded this and we are currently snuggling on the couch and listening together. Thank you for this gift!!

Notes from Underground Or - who in the Levin family do we have to pay how much to get you access to his books with a John Boehner-esque audio book break at the end of each chapter (except instead of ripping Ted Cruz you rip the patriarchy in general — or rip both!).
Josie Cline
So ready for your audio book version of pretty much any book

I’m sorry. I just can’t shower until the next Stave is released.

Thank you Sarah and producers for saving yet another holiday, this is fantastic.

When/will the rest be posted?

The muppets are how I was introduced to this story, and I refuse to believe there are any other versions, but a narration done by you was something I didn’t know I needed until now. A tremendous Thank You for the joy you and your contributions bring because they are truly a gift to so many of us, especially me. You’ve got a great team & I appreciate all the hard work. 💚 Happy holidays!

I'm not usually an audiobook person, but I'm enjoying this so much. It's so soothing and cozy, just what I need right now. Can't wait for the rest of the story!

Omg I've always wished for a Sarah-narrated audio book since the stepford wives episode and now my wish is coming true!
Kirsten
Ahhhh Sarah!! I’ve been reading this book every December for as long as I can remember, I’m so excited to have your glorious voice reading it to me this year ❤️🤍
Renata Gutierrez
Thank you, Sarah! I’ve been meaning to read this for years, and it’s so much more delightful to have you read it to me! A Christmas miracle if ever there was one. 🥰
Jill Gluck
Sarah! I love this so much! You are so talented! This is my favorite part of Christmas so far this year. Thank you!! Will you read me all the stories? ❤️

I had the album when I was little and listened to it all year long!
Shiloh Beazel
Muppet Christmas Carol is my favorite movie ♥️
Zoe Michael
Thank you for this! I broke into a huge grin at the grave/gravy remark… I think you have brought that line up before in conversation and it was a grand full circle to hear you read it.
Lauren Lambert
I love this 💜
Shelley DeWees
This was so great, thank you!
Robyne Lloyd Davies
Thank you, Sarah. This is such a joy! 🥰

Can we please talk about how awkward that is that Scrooge is described as having a pointy nose? I’m just saying….
elizabeth
Thank you for this wonderful treat! This is always a hard month, and right now particularly hard, so I’m so very grateful 🩷

Our tape of the George C Scott version included the big blue IBM commercials, so I always feel that nostalgia. Watching on a DVD just isn't the same.

I was just thinking about how, for those of us from the taped-off-the-tv era, old commercials are as crucial to the holiday experience as the shows themselves. My mom taped "Muppet Family Christmas" when it aired in 1987 and due to hundreds of subsequent watches, Christmas will always make me want to grab on to that m&m feeling ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NjalXr8JwW0) and wear oshkosh b'gosh (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ncQD--dUuo).

I am so delighted by this treat — plan to listen as I write out this year’s Christmas cards 🎁

After my annual muppet rewatch, this is the best possible surprise. Thank youuuuu

Just when I think I can’t love Sarah Marshall more, she reads me a bedtime story. Cannot wait for the next instalment.

Thank you so much for this, Sarah.
Andrea Powers
What a delight! Thank you! Looking forward to the next installments.

This is the next present I can imagine. I listen to the Patrick Stewart audiobook every year and listening to you read it I am getting a whole new feel for the story. So fun! Thank you!
Sonya
Thank you for doing this! My teacher read A Christmas Carol to us in sixth grade, probably over the course of a week or so. I remember we got to spread out and get comfortable. I also grew up w the George C Scott version. It’s been a really hard year for me, and this is bringing me a lot of joy. Many many thanks, and merry Christmas to you Sarah!
Anne
I love this! Like the perfect Christmas gift it’s something I never would have thought to ask for. Next, maybe do some Edgar Allen Poe short stories? I’ve been watching Fall of the House of Usher on Netflix and really want to read or reread some Poe soon

I love public domain audiobooks! And moreover, screw the misogynist apple podcast review haters, I have always enjoyed your voice so much. I got an MP3 player and a flip phone to remove distractions, so I've been listening to Anna Karenina from librivox while I work in the printmaking studio. I listened to Dracula this way, and Jane Eyre, plus lesser known titles like He Fell In Love With His Wife (charming little fake/pretend relationship fic from the 1870s) or The Art of Bookbinding: A Practical Treatise, which is as nerdy and fun as it sounds (there are tables! Tables of old recipes for chemicals and stuff, and they use all the old alchemy names for things!) ... In short, there are a lot of good old books, and we are in constant need for them to be read aloud. (You should put this on librivox if you haven't already. They have a great library.)
Georgie Lewis
This is just brilliant Sarah! I always say that your voice is part of what makes YWA such a comforting podcast -- even when tacking non-conforting topics (or Flowers in Attics!). This really is your medium, and Dickens is a perfect vehicle!
Jennifer Lewis
Yes, and can we book club both??
Andrei Nicolae
And then Wide Sargasso Sea!
Stevie Baker
This is sooo awesome! I can't wait to listen. Great idea!

Can’t wait to listen to this - I only read it for the first time last year. Was surprised by how short it is, and how like and not like it the adaptations are. Scrooge is much more self aware - but it’s also quite funny. Wanted to comment on the cattle mutilation episode. Brit here. Horse ripping is still a thing that people worry about in the county side. Some people out there enjoy abusing animals - although maybe people’s fear is part stoked by urban legend. However people doing nasty things to horses makes the papers often enough. But “ripping” - you already knew this verb! Jack the Ripper… the Yorkshire Ripper…
Natalie Hayes
Haven't read it since school. It's far more sinister without the singing cabbages. Great fun - thanks, Sarah!
Stacy Magerkurth
I've never read it and have been extremely moved by Scrooge. The friends he most rejoices to see when Past first takes him back are his books. Oh buddy. ❤️
Jennifer Lewis
So excited for this as I read it every Christmas! Begging you to do Jane Eyre in 2024!
Kiki
Thank you for this lovely Christmas treat! And thank you for providing us with such high quality content year in and year out. You're Wrong about and you are good are the only two podcasts I have patron subscriptions to because of how much I appreciate ya'lls work. I saw someone suggest Alice in Wonderland, which I definitely second. 💕 happy holidays!

THIS IS SO DELIGHTFUL, THANK YOU SARAH! What a sweet, comforting Christmas gift.
Toni Travis
This is very cool. Please consider The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett for a future book pick! It has a hold on my heart almost as strong as the '90s film adaptation that made me a Colin Firth fan decades before I would realize I knew him as a child.
Rebekah Hinton
Alice in Wonderland next please!

Yesss thank you for an early holiday gift!! A local theatre is showing Muppet Christmas Carol this year (19+! With mulled wine!) and I am so excited to listen to this before going to the show.

There could not have been a better Christmas gift. Thank you.

Muppet version is always the best version 💙

I realized just now that I have never read A Christmas Carol. Thanks for everything this year and I can’t wait to tuck in for a listen. 🥰
Abby Picard
My Dad used to attempt to read me A Christmas Carol every holiday season as a kid, but most years we never really made it further than the Ghost of Christmas Past. I am so excited for this project! ✨
