Yall really just scratching the surface of why you’re wrong about bachelor nation here, there’s soooo much more to dig into about the role of production and editing and “for the wrong reasons” being weaponized and how contestants can’t discuss social media or else will be punished for it and then the competition from the new wave of reality shows that really show how overly produced and heavily manipulated the players on the bachelor are. You have yet to go full galaxy brain on this topic tbh!! I’ll never forget watching Jake Pavelka’s season of the bachelor where Vienna was the villain the entire season, he proposed, and then they do a special where the couple is brought out and everyone sees that Jake was the asshole and Vienna was manufactured into being the villain by the edit and her behavior in the mansion. I was like 10 watching that and thinking “wait what” and that lowkey kicked off my entire interest in media as a career. Even the Aaron Clancy and James moment yall talk about… like can’t even get started on what production does to players on sand. Those boys went through the wringer, and Aaron specifically with the performance of a lifetime fighting with Gen, that they chose to self eliminate to get the hell out of there. That was also the season they tried to rip off Love Island I believe and it was a massive failure. And shirmpgate yall mentioned? Production and manipulation to make that so much worse than it ever was. The players are incentivized, told they could get more time with the lead if they do x y or z, and then the overproduction and editing of the show really becomes obvious. Especially when you come to the excellent casting on shows like Love Island USA season 6 ANYWAY yall I could go on and write a whole ass book about tears for profit. And we didn’t even really get into the lawsuits, push for unionization, racism, lack of body diversity and discrimination, etc etc etc etc Ok I’ll stop writing now

Really interesting to think about all of this in comparison to newer dating shows like Love Island and Love Is Blind. Not sure the facts on the production of those shows but .. I’m 99% sure it’d be a stark comparison to say the least.

I also read/watch recaps of reality dating shows, but don't watch the actual shows. (Or sometimes I watch one or two episodes, but never a whole season.) I want to know about the drama but I just can't see how to fit a whole series into my schedule, and after I watch one or two episodes, I feel icky. I always felt like kind of a weirdo that I was partaking in the discourse without watching, but I'm glad to know Sarah does this too! (Sarahs unite!) (Also, UnReal is an interesting fictionalized take on this whole thing, although I also felt icky watching that and stopped after one season.)

This is exactly the conversation I needed while my brain slowly seeps out my ears from exhaustion. Australian Bachelor got cancelled. Low viewers, frustration with lack of diversity. Their answer to this? Get 3 white bachelors instead of just 1. So it was confusing, shit, and even more white. Terrible
