I am honoured to introduce to you the special guest actor hosting our latest Honest Government Ad - just published to YouTube: Visit Myanmar!
Her name is Ingyin Hlaing Hlaing and she is a refugee from the 2021 military coup in Myanmar.
One of the many people whose lives was abruptly interrupted by the coup, Ingyin was studying medicine in Myanmar but had to flee the country when her father - one of the elected MPs who were arrested in the 2021 coup - was imprisoned by the junta (he is currently serving a 100+ year sentence).
She arrived in Australia on a humanitarian visa in 2022, and learned to speak English to the point where she was able to resume her studies - still hoping to become a doctor - whilst also starting her acting career in locally-made films about the revolution.
I was put in touch with Ingyin by people in the Burmese diaspora community here in Australia. And after hearing her story, I just had invite her to host this HGA - an invitation she warmly accepted.
And I don't know about you, but I am blown away by the incredible job she did of it! Not to mention her bravery. Coz if you know about the conflict in Myanmar, you'll appreciate how courageous it is of her to front this video. (And If you don't, then this HGA video will give you a good overview in under 5 minutes). Respect. If you'd like to follow Ingyin, she asked me to share her FB page.
The conflict in Myanmar is little-known around the world - a virtually forgotten war.
That's why people in the Burmese diaspora here in Australia asked us to make an HGA about Myanmar, in the hope that we could help more people to learn about what's going down there. They also put me in touch with Ingyin, as mentioned, and provided assistance with sourcing many of the images and footage that feature in the video. For their safety however, they asked not to be credited.
I love responding to such requests and collaborating in this way with people from the places we cover outside of Australia - like our Visit Hawai'i, Visit Puerto Rico, Visit West Papua and Visit Canada HGAs - among others.
And making HGAs that raise awareness about issues that desperately need it, makes me feel like we're lending a hand where it's most needed. Which is such a rewarding feeling.
And I'd like you to share in that feeling, too. Because we wouldn't be of much help to anyone without your support here on Patreon: I could never have spent the past month researching and making this video, let alone pay Ingyin a good fee to act in it. In our next video, we'll be returning to matters closer to home as we look at our upcoming federal election here in Australia. Unless civil war breaks out in the USA after next week's election, in which case we may have to do something about that. We sure live in "interesting times".

Remember sitting down for tea with a young, 19 yrs, Karen female fighter in their house on the banks of the Moei river, that forms the border between Thai and Myanmar in part, in the days before. Was barely a couple yrs older than her myself Already a long struggle for them at the time, things blew up and have rarely settled in the decades since. Was a pretty wild border zone then and think it still is despite some development Have followed the fortunes and misfortunes of the people ever since Another HGA to be proud of sponsoring in a small way for whatever eyes it can bring to the situation and get the story out

Thank you Sally. Yeah, there's a lot of countries helping to sustain the junta. Australia is one of them - albeit to a much lesser extent than those mentioned. But we decided to leave out Australia in this episode, in consideration of Ingyin's status here as a refugee.

Thank you Francesco. You always have a good side note to add! I am aware of the criticism of Aung San Suu Kyi - a criticism shared by many Myanmar civil society groups - and that is why I took care not to endorse her in this video. Nevertheless, it is also important to recognize that she was democratically elected by the people of Myanmar in 2020 and subsequently granted a position in the National Unity Government. It's also good to see that there have been some positive steps by the NUG and wider Spring Revolution towards addressing the wrongs committed against Rohingya, eg. setting up a human rights ministry and appointing a Rohingya as deputy minister. They have recognized Rohingya rights to citizenship, support the ICJ case of genocide, have accepted the ICCβs jurisdiction and clearly called for accountability and reparations for Rohingya. You make a very good point also about the various factors that influenced and constrained Suu Kyi's actions whilst in power. Loved it, yet again. Just a side note that I think important: when Aung San Suu Kyi finally rose to government, she did, among other things, because the international community - and I must admit, the international left - pumped her as some kind of messiah, despite the evidence of her being object of a cult of personality. When she finally reached power, she started then being ferociously cticitized because she did zero to stop the Rohingya genocide, as one might have expected if researching her figure without transforming her in some kind of religious icon. Clearly, her agency was limited by a miriad of reasons we can't understand from here, and the same can be said about how and why the military junta took power again. But we have a role also in continuously pumping every non Western figure that fits our way of seeing things, participating in disasters they can bring about. We have to be way more careful in this sense.

Was actually on Thai Burma border on 8/8/88, the 8888 uprising, when protests had started and 3,000 people at least were shot over following days Incredible how the people have struggled since then, sometimes forward, but mostly crushed under military rule

So when I initially saw the words versus just hearing them in the audio preview, I pictured an Egyptian mummy with Min Aung Hliang enjoying necrocoitus much like JD Vance enjoying couch coitus!
