Xie Lian is nowhere near as clueless as he appears. In the novel you get a bit more of his thoughts so it’s obvious he’s no fool. He has been highly suspicious of San Lang all along. He just doesn’t care. He has not judged him. And he might baby girl his way along, but don’t forget that he is a god of war. His heavenly powers are mostly sealed away right now, but you saw him kill that demon in the flashback in episode 1 or 2, and that was without any godly powers. There are blink and you miss it moments when he’s used unbelievably fast martial arts (e,g, disarming the sand puppet).

Xie Lian REALLY has the worst luck lmao that's the running joke xD story-wise and animation/artsyle-wise, I highly recommend watching the anime Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation after Heaven Official's Blessing! It has a bit more action but also supernatural crime solving, it's also gay, and it is written by the same author (the novels I mean)!

The book tells us quite early on what Xie Lian has around his ankle and neck so I'll just fill you in. He wears bandages to hide the cursed shackles that he got following his first two banishments. They are used to seal a god's spiritual energy. When he was first banished they sealed his energy away but he managed to ascend a second time so they had to seal it again with a second shackle. It's also why he always needs other gods to lend him spiritual power and why he can't really wield spiritual weapons.

San Lang threw the broom at Fu Yao because his general, Xuan Zheng (or Mu Qing) was Xie Lian's servant in the past so they get triggered being reminded of it now that they are gods xD Nan Feng's general Nan Yang (or Feng Xin) was Xie Lian's bodyguard.

the parts were translation is "lian" isn't actually right, sanlang calls xielian in a cute playful way "gege", like an older brother or a second meaning similar to korean "oppa"

Fun fact: when Hua Cheng talks to Xie Lian the subtitles always say just "Lian" but since the beginning Hua Cheng has been actually calling him "gege" which is (to my understanding) kinda like korean "hyung". It's kinda funny bc to Xie Lian they just met like a day ago and Hua Cheng is already acting like they are super close lmao
