Vocal fry isn't the opposite of falsetto (head register); it can be done in falsetto. My understanding (from my voice teacher) is that it's done by reducing the amount of air flowing. There's an old fast food commercial where a guy says "oui " and a woman responds -- with vocal fry -- "that's not Spanish". If I find it I'll post a link.
