I have heard, and I'll have to see if I can recall where now, that the "fighting jack-rabbits" that everyone assumes are males fighting over females are exactly the opposite: that in fact it's the females who are the savage boxers and the males kind of sit back bemused while they tussle it out.

This actually isn't that surprising. I've seen jackrabbits fight each other in Camp Pendleton and it was like something out of a martial arts film. They were throwing jabs, right crosses, side kicks... Then one hopped up, spun around in the air and nailed its assailant right in the face.
