That's the sound they make hitting dusty ground?

what's with the pebbles going 'pap'

Right, but neither of us can jump over a tall building in a single bound. If I stomp down as hard as I can, my foot stops on the ground and maybe my head goes up a little depending on my stomp posture. If I did that same thing on the moon, I'm pretty sure I might lift off the ground a little. Now imagine your normal vertical was "tall building" and you'd have to start being careful whenever you put any energy into your legs. Obviously, if you stomp, you're not trying to jump, so you know not to fully extend your legs, but like with my moon example, I think there are certain levels of strength in relation to local gravity that would become tricky.

Stomp the ground as hard as you can and I bet you'll notice a difference between just "planting" your foot down. Velocity does matter in force generation as you showed us in your last page with your math. And stomping doesn't make me jump either, which I also find weird. For reference you can try standing on a soda can or stomping one (or some other material like a cardboard box). There's definitely a difference.
