I kind of want to leave the question open, but... Math did "lose," in the sense that he eventually got pinned. But only after taking on four experienced adventurers/fighters that out weighed/strength/reached him, with at least one guy who can nearly match him on speed, and another guy who is basically as tough as a rhinoceros. Still, it took them over 10 minutes and a mess of bruises to get him. But everyone involved leveled up their, as Sydney puts it, "being punched a lot" skill, so they're all fine with the outcome.
I'm one of those guys who thinks martial arts is cool but could never picture myself getting involved in a sport that involves being punched in the face a lot. Something like Judo or Aikido, sure. I took a few Aikido classes when I was in college. Not like, Aikido 101 or anything, I mean I attended... 5 (?) free classes being taught by some brown belt. My belt color is clear. But something like boxing? No way. And that was before everyone had a much better understanding of what prolonged weekly concussions might do to you in your not so old age. I wonder if sports like boxing are seeing a decline in enrollment now that terms like CTE are entering the common parlance, despite the best efforts of NFL owners and I'm sure boxing promoters. My guess is... probably a little, but not as much as I would initially guess.
Or if there is a falloff, it's probably due to a being raised on Playstation and iPads, and not "ride your bikes over to your friend's house and otherwise disappear into the woods for hours and no one knows where you are and show up barely in time for dinner covered in bark and mud." I kind of straddle those generations. Really I'm more of a Commodore 64/Atari/O.G. Nintendo kid. By the time the Playstation 1 came out, I had recently graduated college. Or... maybe I was a few months from graduating. Doesn't matter. The point is, I don't recall off the top of my head when I graduated from college.
I think Peggy needs to get that chest tattoo colored in, because just the top of it poking over her collar makes it look like she's got chest hair.

Yeah the space bandages will have the bruises taken care of in under a day. The broken finger might take a little longer unless they go back to their ship, and Frix uses some sort of directed healing internal tractor beam technobabble thing on it.

I used to do martial arts a LOT. I even taught them for a while. Which while I didn't have a lot of spare time (I worked a lot of hours) I still did it because there's a certain amount of fun to it. I once caught a foot to the chin (And I was wearing full contact gear because we fought hard) that was something of a fluke, and wow, that experience was something I'll always remember. I wasn't knocked out and I had a mouth guard in, but it definitely lit me up and made the next few minutes quite interesting. So there's something to be said for learning what it's like to get nailed with a really good shot, especially if you can't stop fighting.

I'm hoping that either they have space medicine that helps with broken bones, or Altus' race heals very well, because otherwise that pinky is gonna be messed up for months, especially as it was almost definitely a joint break because of how tough he apparently is (breaking one of his bones should be quite difficult). Fingers are one of the worst things to break (speaking from personal experience here). Which really fits with what Sydney is saying, getting an injury that will take months to heal sounds like a dumb thing to risk for entertainment. My injuries have all been accidents, with a couple cases of accident/ clumsiness. Although as another person says, humans do all sorts of shit for entertainment, so, not exactly off brand.

If boxing is getting less popular, it's probably because MMA has gotten more so. Admittedly there's usually somewhat fewer punches to the head (but not none - I've watched maybe four matches in my life and one of those was a knockout), and I'm not sure all that wrestling around on the ground doesn't do anything.

On the boxing thing - knowing how awful A Thing is for you isn't exactly a disincentive for humans to do that Thing. Ex: we've know my entire 40-something year life long that smoking is awful and ahs all kinds of horrible nasty long-term side effects. There are basically no positive benefits to smoking either; it's all bad, no good, and yet we still have a robust population of smokers (diminished certainly, but there's enough of them out there that the tobacco companies are still making bank). In the case of boxing, someone will *pay* you to get your brain bounced off the inside of your skull like a pinball machine. It's not going away on its own.

It may say something about my childhood (and early adulthood) activities when my first thought to Sydney's "seems less fun than" is "clearly, you haven't sparred enough". Don't get me wrong, I love my video and board games, but as a kid there was a lot of unarmed sparring and in my mid-to-late 20s I was participating in HEMA (not SCA, fight rules are very different and I have zero interest in re-enactment) at least every Saturday for 3-4 hours, and occasionally after work during the week. It's a lot of fun. Of course my second thought was more in line with the response from Peggy with "Perhaps you aren't considering what your team does for a living - the practice is needed."

Well, she did get a run down of all the traumatic memories and such; I think those two might know each other better than anyone else at this point, depending on how much was retained post-possession. Probably makes for a good amount of common ground. And of course she's a bard; her first adventure to space resulted in a flaming orifice and partner of a different species.
