I’ve heard It said before (by black content creators) that many black people lack reading comprehension and analytical skills. Over the years I’ve found that to be true while navigating social media. As a nerdy black girl that loved to read growing up, I was of course labeled as trying to “act white”. I think this sentiment in the black community is partly to blame for this issue of a deficit of basic reading comprehension.

My working theory is that for a long time was we conflated media saviness with media literacy. Because young people were just really good at navigating the internet and finding the information that we wanted. We began to believe that meant that they were clearly and easily understanding the information that we that we found. And that's not true right. People sometimes maliciously sometimes not can read information and somehow completely get the opposite intent of what you meant. Or you can see where someone was using a very simple metaphor or simile and someone will take it very literally and you just have to question how did we get here? People don't know what they don't know. And I don't think for as long as the internet has been such a vital part of our daily lives that we have put in as much effort as we should have to make sure do you know what you're reading? How do you identify what you're reading? What are some basic tools and skills that you can use to parse out the factuality of these statements? I remember when I was in middle school, it was still difficult to make sure that especially kids who lived in the city had access to a computer because not everyone had a home computer or even reliable internet service.
