Some BTS on my work for Illumicrates special edition of The Irresistible Urge to Fall for your Enemy!
Lots of different directions for this one trying to balance the clients needs. Took me way too long to figure out we were going for a more graphic, modern, pink, black and white look as opposed to something more fantastical and dark academia.
I was personally gunning for the first design with the ribcage, but after seeing other special editions I think the pink makes the most sense! Though, my design for the background ended up getting cut in the end haha. 🤷♀️

Hi Mani! Great question. It depends on the project, but usually I try to get an ARC or manuscript of the book so I can get a sense of the story, tone, and characters. Clients also typically include a brief that includes descriptions and images for my reference, which is super helpful! If I can’t get that, I always ask the client to give me any and all details they can so I’m not flying blind. There have been times I’ve drawn for a book without reading it, and after reading sit there like “I would’ve drawn this so much differently if I knew all this” lol.

Hey Frost, how do your process of accepting commissions work? Like, for this commission do you read the book first? do you ask for a summary to get the idea and details? It would be so nice if you told us how does that work!
