🕑 Added 2024-08-07 18:37:25 +0000 UTCThanks to some brilliant observations from Rhys Williams, I've been able to work out how the Loose Canon reconstruction is incorrect, and how the broadcast version differed from the script. There are still some unanswered questions but we're a step closer to understanding what the episode looked like.
(And you have to love the irony that I'm worrying about this at the same time Ian drops his version of episode one, which features drone shots and a cast of thousands...)

I know loads of people have said this in the past, but it is certainly strange how the BBC managed to keep loads of the paperwork about these stories but not the actual 16mm prints. It’s very interesting to see you analyse the Audio and then put all the Telesnaps and censor cuts together whilst trying to decipher the paper work for more clues as to how it was on screen. I think you have a very close representation of what happens but like with the double gun shot sound we are all just guessing and the only way to actually know would be if we had those elusive 16mm prints. Does any of the paperwork indicate a horse being hired or provided for the filming? It feels like there are more than two redcoats on the audio. Maybe the two actors played multiple redcoats for this sequence?

Amazing investigative work! Definitely sparks a load of "what if" questions for other missing episodes too. I have some ideas about the mystery double tap: Was it possible the same sound effect was used for two different purposes? Maybe the Redcoat fired, and then the same sound effect was reused for hitting Alexander's shield? Or maybe some of the flurry and crash noise is actually the musket shot before the 2 taps which is actually something else? My gut feeling is that one of these sounds was the musket, as the long gap afterward could indicate the soldier reloading while he was being charged. Another thought: Alexander could be hitting his own shield twice with his sword in a dramatic way before charging the soldier?
