Mycenaean Citadel - Patrons' Edition
🕑 Added 2024-09-23 16:28:39 +0000 UTCThis map was heavily inspired by the Citadel of Tiryns in ancient Mycenae. If you're not familiar with Mycenae, it was an ancient civilization that occupied all the parts of Greece you're likely to visit on vacation.
Tiryns is old enough that it was mentioned in the Iliad. It was built around 2500 BC and abandoned by 200 BC. This place actually appears in the Hercules mythology as well. It was the home of King Eurystheus, who ordered Hercules to go beat down the Nemean Lion, the hydra and so on. So if your party comes here and picks up a quest or two, they wouldn't be the first.
Next, I'm going to draw a roof level for this map for patrons. That should only take a day or two and then I'll get started on the next few levels of the Stygian City. Anyway, I hope you like it. Let me know what you think!

I recommended it mostly because of the connection of hellenistic architecture interacting with the new-ish Buddhist religion and the indian rock carved-architecture, as seen in the pillars that define the Maurya period. As the "newest" of the Junagadh Cave Group, I have to imagine with the rise of Buddhism they needed more space for monks during their annual retreats. Tbh I was hoping you had some experience in finding old castle floorplans.

Part of what is fascinating to me about them is that because of their wood construction we dont know what the grand palaces like Ashoka's palace were actually like outside of travellers' accounts. For a better documented site, maybe the Uperkot Fort/Uparkot Caves?

I love these real life castles and fortresses done as battlemaps. Maps made purposefully for gridded combat sometimes lack that charm that comes from a place designed for people to live in. If you ever find yourself looking at more ancient Indian castles or fortresses, like the Maurya who were contemporary with Hellenistic Greece, I would be overjoyed.
