Thanks! I wonder if there are any prairie plants that have the same requirement, as they evolved with fire, too. That'll keep me busy for a while. Guess I'll be trying some proteas!

There are quite a few plants in California that are the same way. Some Arctostaphylos surveys as well as the related Ornithostaphylos oppositifolia from Baja. Many plants in South Africa are the same way since fire is part of the ecology there. They literally need a chemical treatment from chemicals found in smoke, but culinary liquid smoke often works as well

Hey Joey...when I was a young plant nerd, and even an older one, I used to cruise e-bay for cool plants. I wanted to try growing some Proteas, but then they all included a "smoke disc, " which I guess helped them break dormancy? Do you know anything about this germination requirement? Are there any other plants that required exposure to smoke (but not fire) to break dormancy?
