The monsoon develops around three different things coming together. First, an upper level(of the atmosphere) high pressure system develops over the Four Corners and becomes a semi permanent feature from mid to late June through September/early October. Second, moisture from the subtropical jet moves in from the southwest across Baja and Sonora. Third, weak disturbances revolve around the high pressure over the Four Corners. This adds the needed rising air to help produce thunderstorms. For West Texas, this means isolated to scattered thunderstorms every couple of days from summer and into Fall. The Davis Mountains benefit from this as it is the main source of consistent rain during the hotter months of the year. Jun-Oct are the climatologically wettest months for the Davis Mountains(and much of West Texas for that matter). The lowlands of the Chihuahuan Desert receive about 8-10 inches of rain annually with the Davis and surrounding mountains receiving 15-20 simply because of the topography. Storms developing over such terrain occurs due to "orographic lift". As air gets pushed into mountains, it is forced up and the moisture is condensed and storms form. The problem the last couple of years has been a consistent lack of moisture from the subtropical jet. That Pacific moisture just isn't making it out to West Texas. For example, ~3.30" of rain had fallen at Patty Manning's place by late July. Ideally, Alpine would have around double that amount. I feel the conversion around the pessimism around the future and climate change. I don’t think it’s necessarily human nature that’s problem but the economic system of capitalism. To me, capitalism doesn’t have the ability or flexibility to address climate change. It’s why I turned to Marxism. But man, it’s so hard not to be incredibly fatalistic and depressed about it all.

If you want, I can explain the meteorology behind West Texas and how precipitation is distributed, including how the monsoon works. Awesome conversation though. Towards the beginning you mentioned people saying "if it's all gonna be fucked up, why bother?" I'd flip it on them and say "why not?" Who cares what you do, especially if it makes you happy and you're not hurting anyone.
