I downloaded the app minutes before the 2024 eclipse and gave it permission to the GPS. Permission to the clock is assumed: you are never required to provide an app permission to the clock. For this app to even offer eclipses from the past without the aid of a time machine to view them is spurious. In app purchases provide more income to the app developer and less to the store. Influencers like Destin can and should negotiate a cut of the proceeds, but they should mention that it includes a paid promotion as well. I do hope Destin gets the baseball reference in my OP.

Thank you for the eclipse information, and the suggestion of the Solar Eclipse Timer App. My son's class had a 6th grade teacher in 2017 who said, "We'll make a time capsule this partial eclipse year, and we can DRIVE to a total eclipse when you're seniors!" That's what we did! We decided on the final spot Sunday, left at 6 am for the 2.5 hour drive- just in case, and beat the traffic. It was a fun day on the family farm. . We were able to see most of the things happening about 20 seconds before the voice in the app advised us. (The timing of C1, C2, C3, and C4 were EXACTLY CORRECT! I just mean that the crickets and frogs were ahead of schedule.) Well, we missed the shadow bands, but other stuff was fun. I brought a simple instant temperature probe and put it in the shade hanging off the table so our class could check temperatures frequently. We didn't have fancy gauges, but we set up three pinwheels facing different directions to see the wind. Of course we had colanders, cheese graters, and hole punches to see interesting shadows. (We'd love tips for the best way to see clear cool shadows - how large and small holes are different. How close or far from the page. Flat or slanted surface, etc. ) Someone said, "Hey, this could be a 20 year reunion plan!! We'll have FAMILIES by then!" That thought was freaking them out a little bit. To echo you - "You should totally go!!!" It was GREAT!!!

I can’t remember exactly how, but when I downloaded the app and looked up the info for this years eclipse, it was apparent to me that it was a paid addition. It did not feel to me like I had been misled. With all due respect, I think maybe you’re ascribing malice here to a scientist who wants to help people experience these events (talking about the man who developed it, not Destin), when your experience could be explained by subpar user interface design or user error.

2024 was my second eclipse in totality (first was 2017) and it was *totally different* because of clouds during the partial phases. I was on the east coast of Lake Ontario and we had great weather all morning. Then a solid high layer rolled in, such that we could not spot the sun while wearing eclipse glasses. That lasted until 20 minutes prior to C2 when the clouds seemed to lift. As C2 happened, the sky condition went from OVC to BKN and I observed all 3.3 minutes of totality! It was awesome and a little creepy. I understand that Syracuse and some locations in Texas had similar experiences. Wouldn't it be great if someone collected data on the impact of clouds during this particular event?

I was blessed to view this eclipse with family that included kids. I looked up this SED episode to download the correct app while my sister passed glasses to her grandkids and it started immediately announcing things to do for the current event. Then, it stopped. Looking closely I found that the app demanded in in-app purchase of $2 for the 2024 eclipse. How nice they included the 2017 eclipse for free, but that doesn't really add value any more, does it? Also, those first few audio announcements stoked excitement in the crowd and revealed that SOME information for the current event were baked into the app pre-purchase. I felt that I had been duped since no indication of required payment was uttered before then. I did not pay the $2 as it was no longer something fun that I wanted to share. Destin, I believe you have been getting smarter, you know EVERY DAY for some time now. Could you have been duped by these greedy capitalists or were you paid a promotional fee? "Say it ain't so..."

We live in Austin and miraculously found a spot a couple months ago at a remote RV park in Fredericksburg, TX that is right smack dab in the center of the path. I can't wait. I would love to be mobile, but they're projecting 100s of 1000s of extra people just in the Fredericksburg area. So, we're going to be stuck there. I can't wait. This video gave me tons of things to look for during the eclipse. Creation is pretty stinking amazing.

EVERYONE should go back and watch Destin's videos from the last eclipse, and DEFINITELY use that guy's app.. We used his advice and found a great place, selecting it by weather, and parking literally an hour or less before "C1" and had a great experience. You dont need to be near anyone.. being in a park with others could be fun, but it's more important that you find a place with no clouds. Find a school parking lot, a WALMART parking lot, a playground.. anything, but make sure you're in a place with good weather and a good view of the sky, and have his app on your phone ready to go. We didn't know about the colander last time, but someone else in the same location had one and it was really cool. We'll definitely take one this time.

I was amazed by eclipse in 2017 and looking forward to experiencing it again in a few weeks. I remember when I was in grade school we had an eclipse and made the thing with the shoe box as a science project and viewed the eclipse through it.

Never seen an eclipse, the UK 1999 one was cloudbound, not one forecast for the UK again in my lifetime. Happily in Canada in 2024 and I've just booked a backup hotel in NY state in case the eastern part of the track is cloudy. Not missing this one!
