It's definitely about control. The "obsession" wasn't about her, it was about him. She was just an object that he couldn't stand not having control over.

I would say it was all about control for him, he wouldn't want someone on "his level" with confidence and their own will because then he couldn't control them and he thrives off the control. so she is perfect for him and everything he could ask for. and as she began to slip away he felt he was loosing his control which set him off
