Chapter 14 — Shadows in the Stone

"So… what is this place?" Sam asked as they stepped into the vast, echoing entrance hall.
Harry paused a moment before replying. His eyes roamed over the high ceilings, the arched doorways, and the stone that had witnessed centuries.
"This," he said softly, "was my first home. The first place I ever found joy… friendship… love."
Emotion cracked in his voice. He didn't care to hide it.
He took another step forward—then stopped.
"Captain Carter?"
Sam was no longer at his side. He turned and found her several feet back, staring at the mural-covered wall, her gloved finger pointing at one of the faded tapestries.
The bulla corpus spell enclosing them shimmered gently, still intact. It surrounded them like a long, cylindrical tube with rounded ends, a magical quarantine tube floating through the ancient halls of Hogwarts. Almost funny—if it weren't potentially deadly.
Harry sighed, lifted his wand, and flicked it.
Sam was yanked forward like a puppet on a string, slamming into his chest with an audible oomph. Quidditch instincts kicked in—he caught her with ease.
If this had been a romance novel, they'd lock eyes, kiss, and cue the strings. But no.
She kneed him in the groin.
Hard.
Harry dropped to his knees with a sound that transcended language.
"You jackal!" Sam shouted, stumbling back.
Pain radiated through Harry's body like wildfire, and with it, magic. Uncontrolled, unfocused, and violent.
It burst from him in rippling waves.
The first wave knocked Sam clear off her feet. She slammed into the flagstones and stayed down, gasping.
The second wave glowed green, lethal magic that disintegrated every insect and crawling creature within the hall.
Paintings rattled in their frames. Dust exploded from between the stones. The castle groaned.
Harry stood, shakily, his eyes now glowing with an eerie yellow hue. The air around him shimmered. Power surged through his veins like a second heartbeat.
Unaware of his feet even touching the ground, Harry floated toward Sam, who had been magically lifted to her feet. She stood frozen, locked in place. Eyes wide. Limbs rigid.
He spoke softly, dangerously.
"Never—never—do that again. Do you understand me?"
His voice wasn't loud. It didn't need to be. It carried like steel under silk.
Sam couldn't nod. Couldn't speak. Her eyes were frozen, staring at his boots, the only thing she could still see.
"I asked you a question."
She tried. Nothing.
"I've been very generous with your people," Harry said, voice low. "Your team shot me. Kidnapped me. Imprisoned me. By all rights, I could have turned your base into a crater. But I didn't. I showed restraint. I showed mercy."
His magic hummed with the threat of unspoken consequences.
"I'm not fifteen anymore. I don't turn the other cheek. And I don't tolerate being hurt. Not by anyone. Not again."
He narrowed his glowing eyes.
"Why are you staring at my boots?"
Sam remained silent.
"Oh... right."
The spell lifted.
Sam gasped and stumbled. Her legs barely held her weight. She blinked rapidly, finally daring to meet his gaze.
His eyes were back to green. Normal. Human.
"I… I'm sorry," she whispered, her voice barely that of a child. "I didn't mean—"
Harry's features softened.
"You don't have to be afraid. I won't hurt you. But you caught me off guard, and that… brings up things I thought I'd buried."
She nodded, still shaking.
"Look around," she muttered. "Even the paintings are afraid of you."
Harry turned.
She was right.
Portraits ducked behind furniture, tapestries, and even behind one another. Eyes peeked around corners only to vanish when he looked their way.
A knight in armour was the first to emerge, trembling as he spoke.
"Fear not, lad. I was only... admiring the back of this table. Always wondered what it looked like. Now seemed a good time."
Slowly, the others followed. Coughing and dusting themselves off, and trying not to meet his gaze.
"Sorry," Harry muttered. "I haven't lost control like that in over a year. Guess some memories don't stay buried."
He turned back to Sam, who now watched him with cautious eyes.
"Explain," she said. A simple request. Heavy with implication.
Harry nodded.
"This is Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. She's more than just a building—she's a sanctuary. She was founded over a thousand years ago by four great witches and wizards: Godric Gryffindor, Rowena Ravenclaw, Helga Hufflepuff, and Salazar Slytherin. They built this place to protect our kind. To give us a place to learn. To belong."
He walked over to the nearest wall and laid a hand on the stone.
A subtle pulse of magic flowed from his fingers into the stone—and came back, warm and welcoming.
"She's alive, in her way if you care to notice. If you treat her right. She's saved me more times than I can count. She's the mother I never had."
Sam blinked. "You talk like it's… sentient."
Harry smiled.
"Not in the way you mean. But yes. She cares. She remembers. If you're late for class, the stairs move to help. If you're lost, you end up exactly where you needed to be. She provides."
Sam looked around again, truly seeing the space for the first time.
"But what happened here? Where are the students? The teachers?"
Harry's face darkened.
"That… I don't know. Not yet. But I will find out. The when, the why, the what, and the how."
He glanced at her.
"Come. Let me show you."
He pushed open the doors to the Great Hall.
It was a tomb.
Rows of skeletal remains lay crumpled over the long dining tables. Some were small—too small. Others still clutched wands in rigid fingers. A few larger forms lay protectively over the children.
Sam gasped, tears welling instantly in her eyes.
Harry didn't speak. He placed a hand gently on her shoulder and guided her forward.
"They're still holding their wands," Sam said in a hushed voice.
Harry nodded. "For us, a wand is more than a tool. It's an extension of our soul. We die with it in our hands."
She swallowed. "The adults… shielding the kids… they must be parents."
"No. Healers. Professors. Most magical families have only one child, or perhaps two. Every child is precious. These men and women… they would have fought to their last breath for these students."
A pair of soft pops echoed through the air. Dis and Hudo appeared inside the magical barrier.
"Great Master Harry Potter," said Dis, bowing low, "Dobby has examined the bodies. A magical fever caused their deaths. You are safe. You have already taken the potion."
Harry exhaled slowly, closing his eyes.
"So many lives… lost… from something so preventable."
He stepped outside the bubble for the first time, placing a hand over his heart.
"Dobby, prepare them for proper burial. I want names. Ages. Everyone, from Hogwarts and Hogsmeade. They deserve dignity."
Dis and Hudo bowed deeply and vanished.
Harry stood in the silent hall, surrounded by the dead.
And swore, quietly, that they would never be forgotten.

A little blow up for Harry there ... but perfectly understandable. I do wonder if there is anyone else with magic or the potential for it alive? Thanks for the chapter! Looking forward to reading much more!
