Wilson

"Xing Ju walked away, irritation gnawing at her. She was tired of being treated like a nobody by a pack of useless bastards." This is more like it...I have always wondered why the young brats are tolerated to such extent just for their potential.

Wilson

Just wondering...did Hu Jin's sky grade technique and other techniques fall into Ye An's hands.. I wonder how much use it will be for her since her element is ice.

PatronTurtle

For a second I thought she was gonna try to recruit our boy out from under Song Song

marlassett

Lady, out with the old, in with the new. Don't you know the law of change. Song San was doing her a big favor with that warning

Gardor

I think comparing the Hogwarts setting to the Blazing Sun setting was the least important part of that analogy, I wasn't suggesting classes cuz "Hogwarts" I was suggesting classes cuz "Sect". But ok you might have a point that this version of a sect is set up more like a labor camp. Despite every other iteration of a sect being essentially a school, and how the MCs other worldly knowledge of xianxia tropes is proven accurate at every turn. So it'd be strange if there was suddenly a genre breaking definition of what a sect was, especially since no one has commented on it. The daily schedule of sect members is still blank, you're just changing which information we're unaware of. Instead of their school schedules we don't know the disciples work detail. Still, if these disciples are just a trapped workforce, and thus classes aren't a viable method to get other young characters to interact, I guess make Liu Feng do some work? Have mandatory mining expeditions or whatever, make groups of disciples mow the lawn together. Before or during his Song Song team up. I am suggesting CHANGES to the story. And YES, I'm aware that Song Song being isolated is well supported within the text, I'm saying it's a mistake. I'm saying that their antagonist being Song Song's master rather than a bully in history class is a mistake. I'm saying not having a chance to interact with characters at their own level is a mistake. I'm saying not depicting this sect as a wide ecosystem full of vibrant characters with their own motivations is a mistake. Hell, I'm even saying that Liu Feng's pretty rapid descent into Song Song support is a mistake. Or, if not a mistake, at least poorly written, for that last one. As an aside, here's the recent evolution of the Song Song relationship: 1) Get invited to join her for the beast wave, decline cuz she's a psychopath. 2) find out Hu Jin is gonna be somewhere, decide that to get away from him you need to join Song Song's crew, (because joining the psychopath is better than just...going with anyone else). 3) draw up a plan for Song that involves being alone for months, go protect a town alone for months. 4) have Song show up and need protection while she advances, put your life on the line defending her. 5) get healed by Song, expose yourself to the sect leader, irrevocably tie yourself to her faction, make enemies of her enemies, snub the core elder who's asking you to moderate her (which you want to do anyway), move in together, visibly become her Chancellor/Chamberlain/Grand Vizier. Did I skip anything of importance? Did I miss when Song Song won over our MC with a creepy smile, and he decided he'd be unshakably loyal?

Gremlin Jack

You realize the reason we never interact much with other disciples is because of Song Song? It's well established that her personality has left her completely isolated within the sect. And Liu Feng has joined her in her excommunication. Your problem is you are comparing the sect to Hogwarts, a school. It is NOT a school. It's a black company. The disciples are exploited for their labor so the elders have the time and resources to pursue higher realms of cultivation, with any spare resources going to their own kids and favored disciples. Everyone else are just wage slaves, with only the smart and lucky managing to scrape their way into management.

Conrad Manaugh

A mere core formation cultivator….

Gardor

Shit you're right, I guess my dismissive language when I talked about the ghost Hu Jin met was unwarranted.

Isiah Debarros

I mean we have seen one sky grade techniques from the sect and it is a fire one

Gardor

Oddly enough, I don't think "Liu Feng avoids the exceptional" and "Song Song is the most exceptional person in the sect, of course she has few contemporaries, who else would Liu Feng pick to support" are good rebuttals to my "give them younger enemies with comparable power levels so they aren't beefing with 300 year old elders." point. How many people are in this sect? We met three students in the outer, and now only one of those students is still in the inner sect. Two faculty, and one of them is now in the inner (and the other is secretly the founder or whatever). Of those 4 other clans, are none of them scheming against Song Song? Her only adversaries are internal Song clan jerks? No one except her grandma is worried about the super talented cannibal with a hair trigger murder habit growing too strong? There was just a big tournament, I assume more than just Song Song, Song San and Ye An fought for the Blazing Sun, right? The one who died or killed someone might have been blazing sun too, so each sect contributed four people? They showed up with hundreds right? To be clear, I'm not advocating for high school teen drama plot lines, nor did I want a longer, more detailed tournament arc. I just think the world is a little bare bones, and doesn't really seem populated by a thousand other cultivators. This could be solved both by giving Song Song rivals, and by introducing fuggin classes. Classes are ready made forced periods of time where you need to interact with your "grade", and can also showcase some of the Sect's underlying culture/mindset. Plus it's an excuse to exposit about the mechanics of cultivation. PLUS it would formalize what it means to be a member of the Blazing Sun sect, rather than this Lord of the Flies type stuff we've got going on now. Surely there's someone in charge of the dorms, and the cafeteria, and the quest board and the market. Someone is teaching the kids farming and fighting and forging and fishing and the thousand other things you do as a cultivator. Like, there's definitely an array focused curriculum, right? Alchemy? Liu Feng learned everything himself, but they definitely put outer disciples though introductory courses to see their aptitude. Liu Feng hasn't been to one lecture, no elder has taught him a thing, he walked into the library and got a part time job, during which he reads. Sorry, bit off track. If there's a better way to organically introduce more characters, I don't know what it is. This is more of a "second pass through" kind of edit tho, you can't just add them in after 200 chapters. It's honestly as if Hermione said, "fuck going to school, I'm gonna make Draco Malfoy the next Headmaster". And then Draco started picking fights with Professors, and they never met another student, and we didn't learn about Hogwarts or magic. And every time Hermione describes him in her internal monologue, Draco is "super handsome with a great ass and nice pecs". But she's totally not into him and in fact doesn't even care that he's hot. In this case, tho, we haven't even established that Liu Feng is skipping "school" cuz the daily life of a sect member is just blank. Oof, that's a devastatingly accurate comparison, imo. Not the main character, very intelligent and loves books, can be savage = Hermione = Liu Feng Evil kid from evil nobility, with a huge leg up on people due to resources, knowledge and inherent talent = Malfoy = Song Song Leader of a regional organization that teaches magical children, a position primarily based on strength = Headmaster = Sect Leader. Spooky.

Thunderhoof

Would be funny if this Core Elder granny banished Liu Feng and Song Song, then Liu Feng returns earlier and stronger, then kills everyone himself before Song2. Like "Fine, I'll do it myself."

SirWins

Liu feng whole principle is to avoid such figures. I am not surprised we have not come across such figures as often. Song Song is a nascent soul seed. Which is mythical level rare, obviously her peers are going to be few in number.

Gardor

Definitely an option! If there's nothing in my whining you think could improve the writing, if nothing I say has merit beyond my own subjective opinion, sucks to be me. I'll just keep yelling into the void.

Brian

Author ignore all of this and keep doing your thing

Gardor

Just cuz I wanna keep harping about stuff I don't like, I think it's wack that there aren't any antagonists who are "peers" to either Song Song or Liu Feng. Ye An was mostly an antagonist-of-opportunity, she just seemed to show up at the worst time before getting defeated, only because one of Ye An's tertiary goals was killing Song Song (for revenge, cuz Song Song beat her once?). Killing Song Song isn't even a priority for Ye An, and she's the closest we have to a long term antagonist. Not really a lot of meat on that bone, especially since Song Song kept her around on a whim. Otherwise, Song Song's most definitive enemies are her former master, who is both a Core Elder and her grandmother, and her older brother, who is a sort of unreliable ally. Liu Feng's main antagonist is... cultivator society? And Fate in general? None of which can be beaten, or even appreciably inconvenienced, if they decided to just kill our main character(s). I think you should have introduced more student-y characters, and given those characters both the means and the motive to oppose the two. Isn't the Song clan one of five clans within the blazing sun sect? So there should be at least four other sect factions with members of a similar age and with similar skills and privileges as Song Song. Make her fight those kids, and work her way up to Elders. (Also, it's hard since the main character has seemingly arbitrarily decided to become Song Song's right hand man, so her enemies are his enemies, so when deciding on an antagonist it pretty much HAS to be Song Song's antagonist. Because he avoids the hassle, and has sacrificed some agency to refocus on her priorities. But I'm not really sure what skin he has in the game. Betray her and get yourself some books, who gives a shit? She's a cannibal psycho, he didn't even shop around for someone with better aligned ideals before choosing to make her the Sect Leader.) This kind of relates to my other complaint about the lack of sect activities, because there isn't an excuse for anyone to interact with each other. I guess the reason most of the sect drama in other stories stems from a student in a class being a dickhead, is because without that structure you just have characters picking fights with core elders, and never meeting anyone their own age. Just to put a name to it, I'd call this a symptom of shallow world building.

Undead Writer

Thanks for the chapter! Like our MC said! Get the heck out of the sect!

StarBat

...Song San is accepting bribes. Not surprising. I also expect him to inform Liu Feng because 50/50 we have no idea what's going on in that head of his.

Darkarma

It's the providence of authors to make new words. It's the providence of language professors to grudgingly accept them. Great chapter. I half expected Song San to die right then and there.

Waifu-glasses

Well, With that last line of thoughts she sealed her fate.

Thunderhoof

Ye An took Hu Jin, she must've kept him alive to fix her. She's using him as a dual cultivation tool.

Gardor

Another point of whining, based on my "Azure Frost sect focuses on ice" comment: every other sect follows a theme based on their name, where's all the fire for the blazing sun sect? Azure Frost has ice based techniques, Titanic Blade is big sword, Void Piercing is weird shadowy spatial stuff. I don't think we've seen one fire technique from anybody in blazing sun, unless you count the ghost Hu Jin met making his grave hot. Oh yeah, some of the elders on the expedition left behind embers after using their movement techniques. I think those may be literally the only fire based things we've seen from the Blazing Sun sect. Song clan seems poison and shadow themed, with this chapter's Core Elder being wind focused. There was the drunk boozy elder, and Hu Jin's elder is... muscly. I guess they could be "light" aspected, but we haven't seen that either. Is anyone ever taught in this sect? What are classes like? It mostly seems like people come to the sect and then get part time jobs. Before Song Song, before becoming an inner disciple, what did Liu Feng do everyday besides working in the library and self study? I guess he's too wrapped up in Song Song now to go to normal sect activities, but are other Inner Disciples going to seminars and taking electives?

Bunny Waffles

If Ye An HAS actually decided to just fuck off away from the sect now that she has the fruit that can prevent/stave off her inevitable death from her physique, then she made a REAL smart call. It was the perfect time too, since it was probably the only chance she was gonna get to escape from the Song Clan drama and certain demise when pitted against the Song prodigies. Also she currently has the Heaven's Chosen in her grasp and he is currently REAL fucked up without his ghost grandpa to bail him out.

Hugo Nuef

I became addict to outsiders talking about Liu Feng and slowly seeing the monster behind the shadow of song song! Tftc

Gardor

Sure it's fine if they can't just Google her Wikipedia page, but "here's an incredible talent out of nowhere with the ice affinity named Ye An" seems a bit too much for them to dismiss as a coincidence. Because they know about the Ye clan, and obviously the Azure FROST sect specializes in ice stuff. If Song Song tested into one of the other sects, no one would have any questions? A Core Elder could make her a disciple with absolutely zero background checks?

JellyNix

I’m addicted to this book. Binged everything in a couple days. I love the characters they feel so alive compared to other things I’ve read.

LAG

Interesting that Ye An is still MIA, perhaps she was smart enough to realize that she needed to keep any information of the fruit being in her possession from getting out, especially to the murder-hobo Song clan. The Granny is about to make her third stupid decision of the story.

Holy Mouse

They definitely took their time with this. But investigating certain things isn't as easy as snapping their fingers. Azure Frost Sect is another big sect. (There is more I would like to say, as it would add more details into the situation, but I'm afraid that would spoil the story. It will be better explained in the story.) I always try and respond to longer comments, because I know they went through the effort, lol. Unless it is extreme spoiler territory.

Jairo Enrique Quevedo

Welp, seems like things are coming to a head. Will this be the "end of the beginning"? Will we see Feng move on to greener pasturers? Will Song Song be along for the journey? Assuming they survive whatever event that is about to destroy the Sect.

Gardor

"Some even schemed to dig into her background to see if she had any connection to the Ye Clan of the Azure Frost Sect or if her name was just a coincidence." Are you saying...this faction of the blazing sun sect hasn't investigated their new figurehead, who they're pinning all their hopes on, to see if the ice technique protege with the same name as their rival sect's leading clan is related to that rival sect? That's really dumb. I mean, I thought it was silly they immediately raised her to such an influential level, given her obvious ties to the Azure Frost sect, but now you're saying they didn't even consider those ties. And also, somehow never noticed her freeze-burning alive every full moon, since they're not sure if she's got an extreme physique.

Daym, "spiderwebbing" is actually a word: verb (used with object) , spi·der·webbed, spi·der·web·bing. to cover with a spider web or fine lines resembling a spider web. I for sure thought I was wrong in that one.
