In response to the take by Bog about older Chinese people being so rude and selfish. There is a wider cultural backdrop that explains why it is so pronounced, and I think two other factors greatly amplified this phenomenon. The first is that the Chinese peasantry had a similar set of social mores to the Jewish Shtetl. A set of behaviors typified by very low manners and lack of personal space. The kind of thing that works at or near the Dunbar number. The average Chinese villager probably felt a similar shock when confronted with modern manners as Jews did when they entered into wider European society. So, when those communities broke down, they just didn't know how to act in an individuated non-rural society. Second is the Confucian character of their previous moral order. Confucian relational ethics was the one thing that pinned the moral order of the village in place. It was what set boundaries for behavior. It was the one thing that made the previous communitarian shtetl ethics work with a wider society. When communism came, it turned that morality on its head while it starved the people. I think these two differences made their debasement by communism and starvation all the more extreme.

Their only problem is their singer is legendarily terrible, but it just kind of works. The unplugged songs are all of meat puppets ii, their best album.
