You're right. Maybe it's just one giant fantastical creation, like what happened with Spooky and what's-that-demon?

Love the time-lapse in panel 5. And panel 4 has more of that airborne paper, which none of the characters have noticed since they got to the pier - just like the falling green leaves at the two previous locations. Hmmβ¦
