Time for another scene compilation with "DVD-style" commentary, which I'll be posting weekly until I start getting the completed pages from Gabriel and Vero for Fallen Chapter Two iater this month.
Not a whole lot new to report on the personal front. Mom's been up and down healthwise, and that's been difficult. Hopefully, we've figured out the right treatment now for her congestive heart failure that'll keep her fluid from building up. Fingers crossed. On a more positive note, I'm just now finishing up the final chapter of my urban fantasy novel, and have booked my first developmental editor. I'm excited about that experience, actually—I've never had a professional structural edit, and I'm very curious what things I'll learn. Finally, Fernando and I have been working our way through Agatha All Along, which we've been enjoying, even though I've heard mixed things about the finale. (But I've been staying away from spoilers!) What have y'all been enjoying? Anything with gay heroes you really like?

Cue Scene!
In the last scene compilation, I explained the difference between a Scene and a Sequel, and here we're back to a Scene, albeit a pretty quick one. But the stakes are high, and the only way to solve them is by taking action (which is what makes a Scene a Scene.)
Teen Spooky Is Tested
Right from the first page, Teen Spooky's inherent impulsiveness is tested. He sees someone in trouble, and he wants to leap to their rescue. Luckily, he has both Amanda and Flyboy nearby to encourage him to take a moment and think.
But what if they hadn't been there? And what if Flyboy hadn't been around in the previous church scene? I don't know how much readers were asking themselves those questions, but when I wrote this, I was hoping they would.
Amanda Starts To Find Her Groove
Not only does Amanda demonstrate a new power here (life sign detection!), but we get to see her leadership skills, particularly when it comes to strategy. One of the things I was hoping to show in Double Cross was how Amanda became the leader she is today. She doesn't have the confidence yet to take command, especially since the boys seem to have so much field experience, but she has great instincts and insight. And her suggestion of how to rescue Ambrosia safely was, I thought, a nice example of that.
Flyboy and Teen Spooky's Teamwork Begins to Make the Dream Work
Also important for me to show in this chapter was the increasingly close bond forming between Flyboy and Teen Spooky, and for superheroes there's nothing better for that than teaming up to save someone! For this particular moment, their powers are especially complementary: Flyboy with his flight ability and hawk vision, Spooky bringing the firepower. I remember I spent quite a while brainstorming a way to blend their abilities, and I'm happy with how that turned out.
And it certainly didn't hurt that Teen Spooky got to be in Flyboy's arms the whole time. :)
It's a Trap!
Of course, now that we've been introduced to our Big Bad, we need to see him being dangerous, and just as Amanda and Flyboy thought, this was meant to be an ambush. Luckily for Spooky, Flyboy can outrun that glowing rope. But what about next time? This villain seems to be a planner which makes him a particular challenge for an impulsive teen like Spooky Jones. How much does he know about our young wizard and how does he know it? Those were more questions I was hoping readers would be asking themselves.

This is a shorter scene so no odds and ends this time (except to say that Adam draws a great, cinematic damsel in distress), but I hope you enjoyed revisiting it along with my own memories.

Well, that's very cool, camelotcrusade. I might indeed do that someday. But that feels more like something I'd do when it comes time to wrap up The Young Protectors—to give a little epilogue of sorts. I'll definitely keep it in mind. :)

Thanks! I appreciate the follow-up questions, because I didn't put *too* much thought into it. 😅 I guess I thinking more of "adulting" than "adults." It's been a while, but I remember some tumblrs where creators would put their characters in "later years" one-shots and "slices of life" (Christmas eve, taking care of the kids, painting the house, whatever). It would be fun to see some of the characters living a a day you imagine for them, and who they're living it with. Of course these are *super heroes* so things could get a bit more wild. ⭐ Another way to look at it is some of us just want to spend more time with them. 💖

I agree I wouldn't want to get too boxed in without thinking more on it, Someoneelse. But there could be interesting ways to pull it off, if I'm understanding what camelotcrusade has in mind.

Thank you, camelotcrusade! And yes, Ambrosia does things a bit differently than our heroes. (And in the next scene compilation, that becomes even more clear.) When you ask for an AU or epilogue with these guys as legal adults, what are you thinking? In the previous story arcs, Amanda and Spooky are adults (or in Spooky's case, adult-adjacent since he starts out at age 20 in Engaging the Enemy.) How old are you thinking?

Ooh, a Not-So-Young Protectors would make a fun bonus comic, like the Truth or Dare. But I think it would be important to have it non-canonical, so it didn't present awkward limits on future stories. Maybe framed as a series of short visions of possible futures, or a prophecy from a questionable source.

I love the successful teamwork here, Alex, and also how they're experimenting with their powers and figuring out when to use them. You do a good job building an origin story in a natural way. 🦸⭐🦸♀️ Additionally, Ambrosia's toolkit for persuasion and evasion marks a clear contrast to how our heroes do it, doesn't it? I guess we don't have a femme/homme fatale character in YP or I'd be more used to seeing it. Maybe once they grow up! 💋 Hmm, that makes me wonder... got any plans for an AU or epilogue with these guys as legal adults?
